Naidu’s Spiritual Tone Sparks Speculation on Political Future

A few days ago, YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy sparked controversy with his remarks on the age and ability of Telugu Desam Party chief and current chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Jagan predicted that Naidu was nearing the end of his political career, claiming he might remain active in politics for only “three or four more years.” He further remarked, “This is the age he should spend praying to God, chanting Krishna and Rama. If he continues to target political rivals, he will surely go to hell.”

These sharp comments drew a strong counterattack from TDP leaders, who asserted that Naidu still has the stamina and determination to lead the state for many years. Some even mocked Jagan, saying he “cannot even bend to break a coconut,” unlike the agile Naidu.

Interestingly, Naidu chose not to retaliate in kind. While launching the P4 scheme in Mangalagiri on Tuesday, he struck a philosophical and spiritual tone, reflecting on life, death, and human purpose.

“Everyone will eventually die, and no one is eternal. Thinking we are permanent on this earth is an illusion—we don’t have a permanent passport to stay here,” Naidu said. He stressed that people should focus on doing good for others rather than chasing material wealth, as possessions do not follow them after death.

Naidu also underlined the importance of spiritual institutions in society. “Temples, mosques, and churches help maintain social harmony. Visiting these places allows people to unburden themselves before God, which relieves stress and supports good health,” he noted. He added that spiritual guides should also take up the responsibility of supporting the poor and addressing mental health challenges, which he called crucial to solving many societal problems.

Naidu’s sudden spiritual reflections have led to speculation among analysts. Some believe he may be preparing to withdraw from active politics after his current term to pursue a spiritual path. “Perhaps this is why he is gradually grooming his son Nara Lokesh as his political successor,” one analyst suggested.
