The government of Telangana is seriously mulling over rechristening Nandi Awards, the state government awards considered as the highest awards in the fields of Cinema, Theater, Television. If reports are to be believed, several names are being considered for the prestigious awards. Names such as ‘Golconda Awards’, ‘Charminar Awards’, ‘Kakathiya Awards’, ‘Veena Awards’ are recommended by intellectuals from various categories and the government is considering these names.
Buzz is that one among these would be finalised. Veering towards cash prize, Telangana government apparently wants to give more than what government of AP is giving. Presently, the cash prize by AP government is pegged at Rs 14.99 Lakh.
It needs to be seen whether government of AP continues at same value or will it hike. Depending on AP’s cash prize, TS government will decided its cash prize. Named after granite bull at Lepakshi, cultural and historical symbol of Telugus, the practice of giving Nandi Awards is first initiated in 1964 in undivided state of AP.
Nandi Awards are presented in four categories: Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Copper. A variant, Nandi Natakotsavam Awards for Theater is also given every year by the government for social, mythological and poetic dramas. Telugu Cinema, Television fraternity is curiously awaiting on how both state governments going to present the awards. Let’s wait and watch.
