Nani Embraces Age, Breaks the Mold

Stereotypes and clichés are an inseparable part of the film industry. Once an actor strikes gold with a particular role, most of their subsequent films tend to follow a similar template. And when a specific formula clicks with the audience, it doesn’t take long for a wave of lookalike narratives to flood the screens. Amidst all this repetition—and the accompanying insecurities—an actor’s journey begins to take shape. But one lingering question remains: how many actors are truly satisfied with their body of work?

A common topic in this context is the insistence that senior actors start playing characters that match their real-life age. While the industry often pressures them to portray much younger roles, change is slowly creeping in. One such refreshing perspective came from actor Nani, and it’s now going viral for all the right reasons.

During the promotions of HIT 3, we spoke to Nani about playing a character in his mid-40s. At 41, the actor chose to portray someone older—something rarely done by leading heroes in Telugu cinema, who typically continue playing characters in their late 20s or 30s regardless of age.

When asked about breaking this trend and whether he grappled with the typical “age insecurity,” Nani’s response was both candid and inspiring. He said he’s actually excited to turn 60.

Nani explained that the more he sticks to playing youthful roles, the more filmmakers would continue offering him stories within that same mold. This limits growth and variation in performance. “In HIT 3, my character is 45. It’s different from what we usually see, and that excites me,” Nani said. “In fact, I can’t wait to turn 60, because I believe that’s when I’ll get the most interesting roles.”

He even mentioned his aspiration to play powerful characters like Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic Sarkar in the future. “There’s a certain realism and depth in such roles,” Nani noted.

With such a grounded and progressive mindset, Nani not only challenges industry norms but also sets a compelling example for his contemporaries—proving that aging on screen can be an artistic evolution, not a limitation.
