Andhra Pradesh’s Education and IT Minister, Nara Lokesh, is making significant strides in both his ministries, addressing issues that have been overlooked by previous administrations. During today’s assembly session, Lokesh focused on a critical matter that has deeply impacted the education sector: student suicides.
Lokesh presented alarming statistics, revealing that 6 students tragically took their own lives in 2016. The numbers have steadily increased, with 7 suicides in 2021, 12 in 2022, and 17 in 2023. He stressed the urgent need for the government to take proactive steps to tackle this growing crisis, which has devastating consequences for both the education sector and society at large.
In response to this issue, Lokesh announced that the state government has appointed 280 counselors to educational institutions, ensuring that students have access to professional support for managing stress and other personal challenges. He identified key factors contributing to these suicides, such as ragging, academic pressure, and financial struggles. The minister assured that strong measures would be implemented to address these concerns and provide a safer environment for students.
It is rare for a cabinet minister to openly acknowledge the troubling statistics within their own ministry, but Lokesh took a bold step in revealing these figures and shedding light on a deeply neglected issue. This transparent approach is expected to raise awareness and drive meaningful change in the education sector.
On another note, Lokesh introduced a groundbreaking initiative for students in Andhra Pradesh, allowing them to access their hall tickets digitally through the Mana Mitra WhatsApp service. With several other progressive steps in the pipeline, the minister’s efforts are expected to bring about significant improvements in the state’s education system.
