Malayalam actress Navya Nair was recently fined AUD 1,980 (approximately Rs 1.14 lakh) at Melbourne International Airport for carrying a 15 cm jasmine gajra in her handbag. The incident highlights the strict biosecurity laws enforced by Australian authorities, which Navya admitted she was unaware of.
The actress had traveled to Australia to participate in Onam celebrations organized by the Malayali Association of Victoria. During routine customs checks, officials discovered the gajra and informed her that carrying it violated local regulations. Navya explained that the gajra was gifted to her by her father before the journey.
In a statement, she said, “What I did was against the law. It was a mistake I made unknowingly. However, ignorance is no excuse. For carrying a 15 cm jasmine string, officials asked me to pay a fine of AUD 1,980 within 28 days. A mistake is a mistake, though it was not intentional.”
Australia’s customs laws are known for their stringent measures, particularly regarding the transportation of plant material and food items. Even minor items like flowers or fruits can attract fines if not declared.
On the professional front, Navya Nair made her acting debut with Ishtam and gained popularity with films like Mazhathullikkilukkam and Kunjikkoonan.
