Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government changed the name of the 65 year old Planning Commission to ‘Neeti Aayog’.Modi government has changed the name with a plan to restructure the body. Neeti Ayog will be the new and reconstructed body that decides the direction of nation’s economic strategising.
The decision to change the institution’s name was taken on Monday at a cabinet meeting. The Niti Ayog would be guided by the Team India concept, where states would have a greater role in policy making. The new body is believed to have a panel consisting of the prime minister, some cabinet ministers, some chief ministers, technocrats and experts from various fields.
Other positions will be filled by the independent non-government environmentalists, financial experts, engineers, scientists and other eminent scholars from different fields. Recently Modi had announced in his Aug 15 th speech that the Planning Commission would be replaced by a new body which is in sync with the contemporary economic world.
He also convened a meeting of Chief Ministers of all states to hear their views on the restructuring of the Planning Commission but some Congress Chief Ministers opposed disbanding of the existing set-up. The Planning Commission was an institution in the Government of India, which formulates India’s Five-Year Plans, It was established on 15 March 1950, with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru as the Chairman.
