Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Yemen’s Houthi movement is paying a heavy price for its aggression against Israel, branding the group as an Iranian proxy and a threat to both Israel and the region. His comments followed an Israeli military operation targeting key infrastructure in Yemen, including the Hezyaz power station in Sanaa and the ports of Hodeidah and Ras Issa. The Israeli military said the strikes were aimed at facilities used by the Houthis for military purposes.
Defense Minister Israel Katz, who observed the operation from the Air Force command center in Tel Aviv, stated that the port of Hodeidah had been paralyzed, and Ras Issa was set ablaze. Katz emphasized that these strikes were a clear message to the Houthis that “no one will be immune.” He further pledged to “hunt down” Houthi leaders, asserting that Israel’s reach extends to any threat, including in Yemen.
This marks Israel’s fifth major airstrike on Yemen. According to Israeli military figures, since October 2023, Houthi forces have launched around 40 surface-to-surface missiles and 320 drones at Israel. Most of these attacks were intercepted. The Houthis had started sporadic strikes in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza following the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. In retaliation, Israel has carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets, and a US-led naval coalition has conducted joint operations to deter the Houthis, who have also attacked US warships in the region.
