Telangana state government has recently invited applications for admission into residential colleges for women and one of the conditions to be eligible is being unmarried. The authorities reasoned that the husbands of married women will distract unmarried girls in the colleges.
A notification on the website of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) reads, “Online applications are invited only from women (unmarried) candidates for TSWDCET-2017 for admission into 1st year B.A/B.Com/B.Sc Degree English Medium Courses in TSW Residential Degree Colleges for Women for the Academic Year 2017-18.”
Defending the eligibility criteria for admissions, a representative of TSWREIS reportedly said that the intention of the authorities was only to ensure that unmarried women in the residential colleges do not get distracted by the visits of husbands of married women.
There are 23 residential women’s degree colleges in TS and this rule has been under implementation from last year.
