Pyongyang, Feb 21 (IANS) – North Korea’s Defence Minister reaffirmed the nation’s “invincible” friendship with Russia during a banquet celebrating Russia’s Defender of the Fatherland Day, hosted by the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang, state media reported on Friday.

The event, held on Thursday, was hosted by Russian Ambassador Alexandr Matsegora and Defence Attache Alexei Bartusov. It was attended by North Korean Defence Minister No Kwang-chol, Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jong-gyu, and other key military and diplomatic officials, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Defender of the Fatherland Day, observed on February 23, honors Russia’s military history, veterans, and active servicemen. Speaking at the banquet, No Kwang-chol highlighted the strengthening ties between Pyongyang and Moscow, citing last year’s summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a pivotal moment.

He emphasized that bilateral relations had evolved into a “comprehensive strategic partnership and an unbreakable friendship,” demonstrating their significance and strength. Expressing support for Russia, No also voiced confidence that the Russian military and people would achieve another “great victory” this year, echoing their past wartime triumphs.

In his address, Alexei Bartusov called the mutual defense treaty signed between Kim and Putin last year a defining moment in North Korea-Russia relations. He praised the historical solidarity between the two nations and expressed gratitude to North Korea for its unwavering support of Russia, despite opposition from the US and its allies.

Since the treaty’s signing, North Korea and Russia have deepened cooperation in military, economic, and sports sectors. Reports suggest Pyongyang has deployed special forces in support of Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine, further solidifying their growing strategic alignment.
