Usually, Tamil Nadu government implements new schemes to attract common public. Likewise, the current chief minister Jayalalithaa is also initiating innovative programs on regular basis.
After serving the middle class through the schemes of Amma Canteens, Amma Cement, Amma Mineral Water, Amma Salt etc for very less and affordable price, Jayalalithaa has today announced a new scheme called ‘Amma Mobile Phone’ for women self-help groups (SHG). The mobile phone scheme is one among many of the Amma brand schemes implemented in the state.
Computerized mobile phones loaded with special Tamil software (Amma Kaipesi Thittam) would be provided to 20,000 SHG trainers in the first phase at a cost of Rs 15 crore, under the scheme.
The SHGs maintain several registers, including those related to meetings, payment of subscription, savings, in-group loans and repayment.
Tamil Nadu has 6.08 lakh SHGs with a membership of 92 lakh women. The federations are also formed at the village level and each one comprises of 25 groups.
