Hyderabad city cops arrested a 70-year-old Arab sheikh for allegedly marrying a 17-year-old girl of the old city of Hyderabad on a contract basis by paying Rs. 60,000. The sheik was 72 years old and he came to city ten days back on tourist visa.
According to sources, the Sheikh approached several agents in Barkas and Chandrayangutta for him to marry a minor. However, was not able to get match for himself. Hence he approached the two brokers Noorjahan and Shafiq who were able to crack a deal by paying money to the minor’s mother.
The 17 year old teenager was made to live with the sheikh for a fortnight and was not allowed to leave. Somehow, the girl managed to convince a 10-year-old boy that she got married against her will and made him call on the mobile phone of South Zone DCP V. Satyanarayana.Within seven minutes of receiving the phone call, a police party rushed to the area in Kanchanbagh in the patrol vehicle and raided the house.
The rescued teenager charged that the old man tried to sexually assault her.While police have slapped charges of rape, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Prohibition of Child Marriages Act on SHeik, the victims’ parents have been booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriages Act.
The sheik revealed some stunning details regarding the contract marriages. “He said that even his forefathers had come to Hyderabad and married minors here on contract basis and flew back to their countries,” the DCP said.
