OpenAI has entered into a landmark collaboration with multiple Samsung affiliates, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries, to drive the development of next-generation AI data centre infrastructure and future technologies. The agreement was formalised through a Letter of Intent (LOI) signed at Samsung’s corporate headquarters in Seoul.

The signing ceremony was attended by Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics; Sung-an Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries; Sechul Oh, President and CEO of Samsung C&T; and Junehee Lee, President and CEO of Samsung SDS.

As part of the collaboration, Samsung Electronics will serve as a strategic memory supplier for OpenAI’s ambitious Stargate initiative, which focuses on building advanced AI infrastructure. With OpenAI’s projected demand reaching up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, Samsung aims to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient memory and cutting-edge chip packaging solutions optimised for AI workloads.

Samsung SDS will partner with OpenAI on AI data centre design, deployment, and enterprise services. This includes contributing to Stargate facilities, helping businesses integrate AI models, and supporting adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise through a newly signed reseller agreement in South Korea.

Meanwhile, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will explore the development of floating data centres and associated technologies such as floating power plants and control centres. These innovations are expected to provide advantages in cooling efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainable land use.

Samsung emphasised that the partnership underscores South Korea’s ambition to rank among the world’s top three AI nations while advancing its own corporate AI strategy. The company also signaled plans to broaden the internal use of ChatGPT across its operations.
