When Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” hit theatres in 2013, it took the box office by storm and left the audience awed with its great story, direction and visual effects. Encouraged by the response, Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures have recently announced that the sequel to the film will be released across the globe on Feb. 23, 2018.
“Pacific Rim 2” will be directed by Steve S. DeKnight. The project has been under consideration since 2013 and has gone through numerous changes since then. The original movie starred Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba in the lead roles. It became a blockbuster in a short span of time and was praised by both the critics and the fans. With all the success and praise the movie garnered, a sequel was inevitable. However, due to several hurdles regarding creative differences and scheduling conflicts between Warner Bros. and Legendary, the project was repeatedly delayed.
As reported by Comic Book, the project for the sequel was revived again after John Boyega of “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” fame was reported to join the cast in the leading role. Boyega will be playing the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) from the original film. After the news surfaced, fans had flooded the social media platforms with their excitement regarding Boyega’s involvement with the movie.
It is not yet revealed whether the actors from the first movie, like Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi, will reprise their respective roles in the sequel or not. Now that the movie has got an official release date, fans are eagerly looking forward to get more updates on the film soon.Zak Penn, the screenwriter of the movie, had revealed earlier that the sequel will emphasise on the origins of Kaiju monsters, who will be the prime antagonists again. Though del Toro won’t be directing the movie, Comic Book has stated that he is pretty excited to be the producer of “Pacific Rim 2.”
