Govt to spend legal expenses for 5 ministers

Share
After delaying the matter for nearly four months, the Andhra Pradesh government finally decided on Saturday to provide free legal aid to five out of the six ministers, while ignoring the eight IAS officers, who had received notices from the Supreme Court in March this year regarding the 26 controversial GOs issued during YSR’s regime.
As per the government’s orders, free legal aid will be provided to Sabita Indra Reddy, Geetha Reddy, Dharmana Prasada Rao, Kanna Laxminarayana and Ponnala Laxmaiah. They can engage lawyers to argue their cases in the Supreme Court and bill the state government for it.Officials sources informed that the ministers will engage Supreme Court’s senior counsel and noted lawyer Harish Salve and his team for the purpose.
The orders, however, sparked a fresh controversy as there was no mention initially about providing legal aid to Mr Lakshmaiah and jailed ex-minister Mopidevi Venkataramana in the GO released on Saturday besides the eight IAS officers who had also received notices from SC over the same issue. In fact, both Mr Lakshmaiah and Mr Venkataramana had written to chief minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy earlier requesting for legal aid from the government.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) later came out with a clarification that there was a “communication gap” regarding giving approval for the file pertaining to Mr Lakshmaiah’s legal assistance and that he too would be extended the same facility. The orders providing legal aid to Mr Lakshmaiah are expected to be released immediately.
Official sources said the file pertaining to providing free legal aid to the eight IAS officers is also being circulated and is currently with the finance department. The government is likely to extend free legal aid to the IAS officers too after completing the official formalities.

TDP is likely to Support Seperate Telangana ?

Sources said TD president N. Chandrababu Naidu has been persuaded to announce the party’s clear support to the separate Telangana state, unlike its unclear stand in the past in order to save the party in the region. It is said that Chandrababu has realized the importance of clearing the anti-Telangana image in the larger interest of the party, particularly after its debacle in the recent byelections. Sources said that the decision was also an attempt to silence the TD’s political rivals, the TRS and the Congress, which have been projecting the it as anti-Telangana.
The TRS has been demanding that the TD prove its sincerity and commitment to the separate state. A Telangana MP of the party told this newspaper that they had succeeded in convincing TD leaders from Seemandhra that the party is serious about extending its support to the separate Telangana state. “All steps have been taken to ensure that the issue of submitting the letter would not become controversial within the party,” the MP said.

CM requests a fresh letter from Ponnala !

Share

The letter written by IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah to Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy reportedly disappeared.
The Chief Minister’s Office on Saturday took a decision to extend legal aid to four of the six ministers to whom Supreme Court had issued notices on the issuance of 26 controversial GOs. While the government has decided to extend legal aid to four ministers Kanna Lakshmi Narayana, Geeta Reddy, Sabita Indra Reddy and Dharmana Prasada Rao, no decision was taken with regard to the jailed former minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana and IT Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah.
It is learnt that giving legal assistance to Mopidevi Venkata Ramana was against the law as he was already arrested by the CBI. However, why the government has not taken decision on provision of legal aid to Ponnala Lakshmaiah intrigued every one, including the minister. Later, it was found that the letter written by Ponnala has disappeared from the CMO. The CMO has stated that it did not receive Ponnala’s letter. It was said that this was the reason why the CMO has not taken a decision on Ponnala. The Chief Minister might take a decision to provide legal aid to Ponnala also after obtaining a fresh letter from the minister.

Nagarjuna rubbishes Rumors on Casino !

Share

The actor has rubbished reports that he is about to start a casino in Goa. “I am shocked to hear such things. I have never even thought of such a thing in my life. I am not going to open a casino or a resort in Goa although I have invested in hotels and realty,” he said.Tollywood stars have been known to frequent casinos whenever they are shooting in Las Vegas or other such places. Nagarjuna too has been to casinos, but “not to gamble”. The actor said he has been to casinos to observe the place and the mood of the people.
“But I have never been able to stay for more than 10 to 15 minutes. I may be rich and can afford a few games, but personally, I don’t believe in blowing up hard-earned money to a quirk of chance. I have always kept a safe distance from such dens,” he said.He claimed that he has never gambled on card games either. “Cards is another addiction and I have seen people cursing it. I have never played cards for betting. I would prefer to watch a movie or read a book instead of wasting money and time on cards,” he said.
Talking about films today, Nagarjuna blamed the SMS culture for hurting box office collections. “We used to have good initial collections but now viewers SMS their opinion to friends as soon as they come out of the theatres. That has dented our collections. Personally, I have also returned a few times from the theatre without watching a film after receiving an SMS from a friend about a particular film.
Watching a bad film is tiresome and I don’t blame viewers for opting out. But novel themes are still patronised by audiences and it’s a good sign,” he said.Nagarjuna will be soon seen in the socio-fantasy Damararukam, devotional saga Shirdi Sai and a love story. “I have always tried to mix the genres of my films and this time it’s happening back-to-back.”

SC rejects petition against Pranab Mukherjee

Share
Observing that it cannot be a “theatre for farcical play,” the Supreme Court today dismissed a petition, accusing Pranab Mukherjee of resorting to corruption in soliciting votes in the Presidential poll and warned an advocate of stringent action if he comes forward with similar pleas in future. A bench of justices Aftab Alam and H L Gokhale initially imposed cost of Rs 50,000 on the petitioner-cum-advocate Manohar Lal, but later waived it after the counsel pleaded for mercy.
The apex court warned the advocate that it would not show any sympathy if he comes out with such similar petitions in future. “You are trying to destroy the system. This time we are sparing you. if you continue to file such petitions, don’t expect any indulgence from us,” warned Justice Alam, who headed the bench. Sharma in his petition had said Pranab Mukherjee ought to be prosecuted under section 7 and section 13(1)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act as he had been soliciting votes from MLAs and MPs for his presidential election which Sharma claimed was illegal. According to the petitioner, Mukherjee being a public servant ought not to seek votes which he was doing even while holding the charge of finance ministry.
If a presidential candidate is seeking votes, what is wrong in it, the bench asked Sharma while dismissing the petition as “worthless”. A similar petition by Sharma against Mukherjee, was dismissed by the Delhi High Court on June 29.
