Indian American Support for Trump Declines Over India Policies

Share

It is well known that United States President Donald Trump is one of the most outspoken and volatile figures in global politics. During his 2024 election campaign, he received considerable support from the Indian American community.

Now, after completing a year in office, a recent survey provides insight into how Indian Americans view his administration, particularly regarding India-related policies. The findings reveal growing dissatisfaction among this community, with approximately 55 percent of Indian American adults disapproving of the way Trump is handling relations with India. This represents a noticeable decline from his earlier term, when around 35 percent had expressed support for his India policies. Only about 20 percent of respondents currently approve of his approach, while nearly 25 percent remain undecided.

Respondents cited concerns over trade disagreements, economic policies, and the overall direction of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Many feel that strategic cooperation between the United States and India has lacked stability and consistency under the current administration. The survey also highlighted a political divide within the Indian American community: those identifying with the Democratic Party expressed higher levels of dissatisfaction, whereas Republican-leaning Indian Americans showed comparatively greater support.

Overall, the data suggests that Indian American opinion is shifting, with an increasing number questioning the current approach toward India and advocating for stronger, more balanced diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Outlines Human-Centric AI Vision at India AI Impact Summit 2026

Share

On February 19, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 held at Bharat Mandapam, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined a vision for artificial intelligence (AI) that prioritizes human safety and dignity. He called for an AI era that is “for the humans, by the humans, and of the humans.” Addressing a global audience of technologists and industry leaders, Vaishnaw emphasized India’s role as a responsible global leader in technology.

Highlighting India’s recent performance in international rankings, including the global AI Index, Vaishnaw noted that India ranks among the top nations for AI adoption, talent, and diffusion. He attributed this success to India’s robust infrastructure, including a large clean energy backbone that supports technological growth.

Acknowledging the disruptions currently facing the IT industry, the minister stressed the importance of upskilling and reskilling the workforce. “AI Index places India among the leading countries in AI adoption, AI talent, and AI diffusion. But we are also conscious of the challenges facing our IT industry, and to mitigate them, we are working with industry and academia to upskill, reskill, and build a new talent pipeline for this new intelligence age,” he said.

While optimistic about the potential of AI, Vaishnaw also underscored the need for safety and responsible deployment. He urged summit participants, including some of the world’s leading AI experts, to offer recommendations for mitigating risks associated with rapid AI adoption, ensuring that technology continues to enhance human dignity.

And Santosh, I hated you during the interval scene!”

Prabhas highlighted several memorable moments, including the close-to-intimate sequence followed by a heartfelt phone conversation, which he said made the mood even more magical. Kuwait Plans Freelance Residency for Skilled Expats

Share

Kuwait is considering a new residency model that would allow skilled expatriates to operate small businesses independently without needing a local sponsor, according to Kuwait Times. The proposal, announced by First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah, would introduce a freelance residence system where expats pay an annual government fee instead of relying on private sponsorship.

During a meeting organised by the Public Authority of Manpower and attended by business owners, the minister stated that expatriates opting for the new system would pay between KD 800 and KD 1,000 per year (approximately Rs 2.37 lakh to Rs 2.96 lakh). The initiative aims to address visa trading, where expatriates pay companies large sums annually for residency permits without formal employment. “Instead of paying to visa traders, pay to the government some KD 800-1,000,” Sheikh Fahad said, noting that the framework could be implemented within “months.”

The minister highlighted enforcement measures, noting that authorities deported 39,000 expatriate workers last year for violating labour market regulations, particularly for working outside legal sponsorship arrangements. He also reported that nearly 3,000 private sector firms were shut down for breaching labour laws. Sheikh Fahad emphasized that salary payments are a “red line,” insisting wages must be disbursed monthly and without delay.

Kuwait remains open to workers of all nationalities, and the interior ministry allows fathers or mothers to independently sponsor children under 18. Rabab Al-Osaimi, head of the Public Authority of Manpower, said the authority is reviewing procedures for transferring residency across various business categories, including small enterprises and government contracts.

If implemented, the freelance residency system would represent a major structural change in Kuwait’s sponsorship framework, shifting oversight from private intermediaries to the state while aiming to curb exploitative practices.

Spain Emerging as a Popular Study-Abroad Destination for Indian Students

Share

Spain is increasingly becoming a preferred choice for Indian students looking beyond traditional study-abroad destinations. With globally ranked universities, high-quality business schools, structured student-to-work pathways, and predictable living costs, the country is positioning itself as a competitive European option. Mayank Maheshwari, Co-Founder & COO of University Living, says, “Spain offers a vibrant study-abroad experience with a broad range of academic, historical, and cultural programs. From lively cities like Madrid and Barcelona to serene coastal towns, Spain combines a comfortable climate, welcoming communities, and rich cultural heritage. Students benefit from academically rigorous programs alongside strong cultural exposure.”

According to QS World University Rankings 2026, Spain hosts several highly ranked institutions. Universitat de Barcelona (UB) is the highest-ranked in Spain, renowned for research excellence. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is recognised for top-tier research and international faculty. Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is strong in social sciences, humanities, and health sciences. Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) is a leading research university in the capital, while Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is known for its strong employer reputation. Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is a top choice for engineering and technology. Maheshwari notes, “With an increasing number of degree programs offered in English, leading universities such as UAM and UCM continue to attract international applicants.”

Spain’s Royal Decree 1155/2024, effective 20 May 2025, strengthens pathways for international students. Students enrolled in long-duration programs can work up to 30 hours per week without separate authorization. Study permits now match the duration of the academic program, reducing the need for frequent renewals. Graduates can apply for residence authorization for up to 24 months to seek employment or start a business, though they must secure work-based residence status once employed. Visa applications for long-stay study permits must be filed from the applicant’s home country. Financial proof is based on Spain’s IPREM benchmark, with additional funds required for dependents.

According to the European Student Landscape by University Living, Spain had 2,350,805 students in 2023–2024, of which 101,871 (4.3%) were international. Indian student representation remains relatively low, highlighting untapped growth potential. Maheshwari adds, “Spain offers a balanced proposition: credible institutions, structured immigration pathways, cost predictability, and cultural richness. For students seeking a European experience with long-term mobility, Spain is a compelling option.”

Living expenses vary by city. Madrid averages around €1,200–€1,300 (₹1.28–1.39 lakh) per month, Barcelona slightly lower, while smaller cities range between €800–€1,000 (₹86,000–1.07 lakh). Overall monthly expenses typically range from €800–€1,600 (₹86,000–1.71 lakh), depending on lifestyle and location. Accommodation remains the largest expense, ranging from €300–€1,600 (₹32,000–1.71 lakh), including on-campus housing, off-campus shared apartments, private rentals, homestays, and Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA). Spain’s combination of academic excellence, cultural exposure, and structured student-to-work policies make it an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students seeking a well-rounded study-abroad experience.

Indian Students and H-1B Holders Struggle in the USA

Share

The situation for Indian students in the USA on F-1 visas has become extremely challenging. Many are unsure of their next steps after completing the 12-month OPT (Optional Practical Training) period. Securing an H-1B visa has become much harder than before, leaving students in a state of uncertainty.

Many students are torn between staying in the USA and risking the expiration of their OPT without H-1B approval, or returning to India immediately. With part-time jobs restricted and frequent ICE checks and raids, relying on financial support from parents in India—often Rs 2–3 lakh per month—is both burdensome and insufficient, especially if H-1B approval is not guaranteed.

“I completed my Master’s in Data Science, and my OPT ends in four months. Every day starts with job applications and ends with anxiety. My parents already spent nearly Rs 75 lakh on my education. I don’t know whether to take another course, return to India, or just wait and hope for H-1B,” says a student in Dallas.

“I am working in a small consultancy on OPT, but the project is not stable. I came to the US with big dreams, but now my biggest goal is simply to maintain my legal status,” says an engineering graduate in Chicago.

The plight of H-1B visa holders is equally stressful. While they have jobs and earnings, their freedom to travel is severely restricted. Several H-1B employees who traveled to India lost their jobs due to postponed visa stamping appointments, preventing their return to the US on time.

“My mother is ailing in Vijayawada. I want to meet her, but I am confined to video calls. I cannot risk losing my job because I have loans to clear,” says an H-1B employee in Connecticut.

“My brother’s wedding is in a few months. But I decided not to go. I will have to watch it through live streaming. I am not sure if I will be allowed back into the US if I leave,” says a banking professional on an H-1B visa in New Jersey.

“I feel like I am in jail, though I am well paid and living comfortably. It feels like a jail because I cannot visit my native place in Siddipet,” says another H-1B employee.

In some cases, families have had to make major adjustments. “My friend Avinash recently got married in the US. His parents wanted a wedding in India, but he had to hold it in the US because of H-1B restrictions. His parents watched the ceremony via live stream from Hyderabad,” says Naveen, a student.

Overall, many students and H-1B visa holders have decided to avoid traveling to India until at least November 2028. While some hope conditions may improve after 2028, no one can predict the outcome. The current challenge stems from stricter enforcement of existing visa regulations, and whether future administrations will change these policies remains uncertain.

The reality is clear: the system remains rigid, and Indian students and H-1B holders must navigate complex legal and financial pressures while trying to maintain stability in the USA.

Share

Hey Balwanth Movie Review: Fun Works, Drama Falters

Share

After a series of underwhelming theatrical outings between April 2024 and mid-2025, Suhas returns with Hey Balwanth, hoping to reset his box-office trajectory. With nearly six releases failing to deliver the expected impact, the actor took a strategic pause before bringing this comedy-drama to theatres. Backed by presenters Vamsi Nandipati and Bunny Vasu, the film generated decent curiosity through its promotional campaign. Originally titled Hey Bhagawan, the film was later renamed Hey Balwanth following censor board objections.

With expectations riding on Suhas’ comeback, a promising supporting cast, and music by Vivek Sagar, the big question remains — does the film finally deliver a theatrical win?

Story Overview

Krishna (Suhas) grows up witnessing his father (Naresh) dedicate his life to building their family business. After completing his post-graduation in business management, Krishna naturally aspires to take over the business. However, his father insists that he first step out into the world and earn his own credibility.

Determined to prove himself worthy, Krishna joins as a business consultant at an NGO managed by Mithra (Shivani Nagaram). Professional association gradually turns into love. Just as life seems to be falling into place, Krishna’s father suffers a heart attack and is advised prolonged rest.

Faced with responsibility, Krishna steps in to manage the family business. What exactly is this business? Why does it carry social sensitivity? How do Mithra and her family become entangled in it? These questions drive the rest of the narrative.

Performances

Suhas once again proves that comedy is his strongest weapon. His effortless timing and understated expressions elevate many fun-filled scenes. He performs sincerely in emotional portions, but the impact is somewhat diluted due to inconsistent writing in dramatic stretches.

Shivani Nagaram fits well into the narrative and handles both light and emotional moments competently. Her recurring dialogue, “Maadi chala orthodox family,” turns into a humorous motif that lands effectively.

Sudarshan steals the show in multiple sequences. His impeccable comic timing and dialogue delivery provide some of the loudest laughs in the film. Many scenes gain energy purely because of his presence.

Naresh delivers measured emotional depth, especially in father-son confrontational moments. However, the comedic writing around his character feels underdeveloped. Vennela Kishore provides situational humor, though one segment in the first half may not sit comfortably with all viewers. Harsha Vardhan and Ajay Ghosh add occasional spark, while Annapurnamma and Babu Mohan lend credibility in supporting roles.

Technical Merits

Vivek Sagar composes two pleasant songs that blend organically into the narrative. His background score supports the mood without overpowering scenes, though it doesn’t elevate dramatic sequences significantly.

Cinematography by Mahi Reddy Pandugula maintains a clean and grounded visual tone suited to the film’s scale. Editing by Viplav Nysdam could have been crisper in the second half, where pacing noticeably slows down. Production values from Trishul Visionary Studios are neat and appropriate for the film’s setting.

Strengths

• Several genuinely entertaining comedy sequences
• Sudarshan’s standout performance
• A few emotionally resonant dialogues
• Largely clean humor without relying on vulgarity

Weaknesses

• Abrupt tonal shift in the second half
• Predictable and clichéd narrative arc
• Overstretched and melodramatic climax
• Weak dramatic payoff

Detailed Analysis

The film’s promotional strategy smartly revolved around the “business” angle, successfully generating intrigue without revealing key details. The premise — a father-son relationship built around a socially sensitive profession — had significant potential.

Director Gopi Atchara attempts to balance humor and social commentary by crafting a dramedy. The film shines whenever it embraces comedy wholeheartedly. The pre-interval stretch, interval episode, and most scenes featuring Sudarshan generate consistent laughter.

Importantly, the director avoids cheap or below-the-belt humor in most parts, which deserves appreciation. Some dialogues are genuinely impactful. The emotional line explaining how a man feels like a hero only when called “Nanna” by his child stands out and adds emotional depth.

However, the film struggles once it transitions into serious territory. Instead of gradually blending drama into the narrative, the shift feels sudden and tonally inconsistent. The attempt to “justify” the profession in the third act comes across as preachy rather than organic.

The dramatic portions lack freshness and feel reminiscent of many earlier social dramas. The screenplay becomes predictable, and the emotional beats fail to deliver the intended punch. What begins as a promising comedy-drama gradually loses momentum due to uneven writing in the latter half.

Final Verdict

Hey Balwanth works in parts. The comedy lands well, Sudarshan shines, and a handful of dialogues leave an impression. However, weak dramatic execution and an uneven tonal balance prevent it from becoming a fully satisfying theatrical experience.
