INST’s new artificial synaptic chip to help transform information tech

Share

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) Scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have created an artificial synaptic device that emulates the behaviour of biological synapses to transform information technology through more efficient computing models.

The team focussed on the workings of the human brain, which is dynamic and has a reconfigurable system. It has direct memory access, with neurons conducting the computational operations.

“Neuromorphic electronics, inspired by the intricate workings of the biological brain, offer the potential to transform information technology through more efficient computing models,” the researchers said.

On the other hand, modern computers have instructions that tell the computer how to handle information and perform tasks. This works by creating separate units for reading and executing complex operations, and then returning the results to memory. This can slow down computing and create a “bottleneck” when handling a lot of instructions and data at the same time.

INST scientists used a novel approach that follows the working principle of human brains to overcome the challenges of modern computing. They utilised the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) within the EuO-KTaO3 (KTO) oxide heterostructure to develop a chip which exhibited neuromorphic properties. It also showed a large change in resistivity known as resistive switching behaviour.

“The developed chip not only mimics the short- and long-term plasticity observed in biological synapses but also performs logic gate operations, significantly enhancing its versatility and potential for integration in advanced neuromorphic systems,” said the team.

Further, the neuromorphic design in oxide interfaces can facilitate more energy-efficient and quicker information processing. It also comes with enhanced AI capabilities and improved device miniaturisation. These systems may learn and change with time, resulting in more personalised and responsive technology.

The research was published in the journal ‘Applied Physics Letter’, and has important applications to improve everyday life, including healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability, said the researchers.

8 out of 10 people with ruptured aortic aneurysm don’t reach hospital alive

Share

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IANS) As Tamil megastar Rajinikanth was successfully treated for swelling in his aorta, or the main blood vessel leaving his heart, health experts on Wednesday said eight out of 10 individuals with a ruptured aortic aneurysm do not reach the hospital alive.

An aortic aneurysm is a dangerous condition where the aorta, the body’s largest artery, becomes enlarged by more than 1.5 times its normal size.

According to Dr Sanjeeva Kumar Gupta, Consultant, Department of Cardiology at C.K. Birla Hospital in the national capital, while typically symptomless, if it dissects or ruptures, it can cause severe chest, abdominal, or back pain and lead to life-threatening bleeding.

Risk factors include smoking, heavy alcohol use, hypertension, and advanced age.

Aortic aneurysms are treated through surgery, either with open surgery or minimally invasive endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).

Dr Krishna Chaitanya, lead consultant, vascular and endovascular surgery, Aster RV Hospital, Bengaluru, said that it is rather unfortunate that most aneurysms do not produce symptoms until it presents a rupture.

“Only a handful of fortunate individuals have it detected incidentally during a CT scan or ultrasound examinations for unrelated conditions. Some studies estimate about 12 per cent of the adults over 65 years of age suffer from aortic aneurysm while a lesser percentage is seen in younger individuals,” Dr Chaitanya told IANS.

Several cases of sudden deaths are erroneously branded as massive heart attacks or natural ageing, while the actual cause is never discovered.

“It is said that eight out of 10 individuals with a ruptured aortic aneurysm do not reach the hospital alive. At present, active aortic aneurysm screening is the only way to detect aortic aneurysm in the population ‘at risk’,” Dr Chaitanya noted.

According to the private hospital in Chennai where Rajinikanth was treated, “he had a swelling in the main blood vessel leaving his heart (Aorta), which was treated by a nonsurgical transcatheter method”.

According to doctors, the EVAR procedure involves placing a stent graft via a small incision to reinforce the weakened part of the aorta and prevent rupture.

For smaller aneurysms or patients unfit for surgery, medical therapy focuses on managing risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol, along with regular ultrasound monitoring. As undetected and untreated aneurysms can have devastating consequences, many developed countries have incorporated aortic aneurysm screening into their national health system. For instance, the NHS in the UK sends a screening invitation to every man after his 64th birthday.

Kenya begins translocation of elephants to boost human-wildlife coexistence

Share

Nairobi, Oct 4 (IANS) The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), a state-owned wildlife management agency, commenced an elephant translocation operation in a bid to boost human-wildlife coexistence and strengthen the conservation of wildlife habitats.

The KWS on Thursday said that nearly 50 elephants would be transferred from Mwea National Reserve to Aberdare National Park, both located in central Kenya.

The translocation, according to the KWS, aligns with the National Elephant Action Plan 2023-2032, developed by the agency and its partners, which calls for securing a sustainable elephant population, mitigating human-elephant conflicts, and restoring degraded habitats, Xinhua news agency reported.

“This translocation also aligns with the newly launched KWS Strategic Plan 2024-2028, which emphasises modern conservation techniques, community engagement, and the integration of technology,” the KWS said in a statement issued in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

It is expected that the translocation will reduce the pressure on Mwea National Reserve, where the elephant population has surged from 49 in 1979 to 156 today, which has caused massive destruction of property, including homes and farmlands, and escalating human-elephant conflicts, according to the KWS.

The agency said the translocation is thus pivotal to protecting the welfare of both elephants and surrounding communities, who are mostly subsistence farmers.

Meanwhile, boosting the elephant population at the more expansive Aberdare National Park will foster ecological balance, promote ecotourism, and unleash economic benefits to local communities, noted the KWS.

Rebecca Miano, cabinet secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, who presided over the translocation, said it would enhance the genetic diversity of the elephant population, protect vulnerable species, and boost ecosystem resilience.

Miano said Kenya has domesticated international instruments to boost elephants’ conservation as the giant land mammal grapples with myriad threats, including poaching, shrinking habitats, and climatic stresses.

Erustus Kanga, director-general of the KWS, said the elephant translocation exercise is part of proactive measures aimed at responding effectively to habitat degradation and human-wildlife conflicts, as well as improving the socio-economic welfare of communities adjacent to wildlife sanctuaries.

Greek military plane carries 60 people out of Beirut to Cyprus

Share

Nicosia, Oct 4 (IANS) A Greek C-130 military transport plane landed at Larnaca airport on Thursday carrying 60 people in the first emergency air evacuation from Lebanon, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said in a statement.

Aboard the plane were 38 Cypriots and 22 Greeks, who continued their journey to Athens, Xinhua news agency reported.

Kombos said that Cyprus will charter a commercial flight to bring more Cypriot nationals out of Lebanon in the coming days, adding that citizens of other countries, who have no other means to flee, will be accepted on board.

Middle East Airlines, which still operates two flights a day out of Beirut airport to Larnaca, said that all its flights to Larnaca had been sold out for the foreseeable future. Cyprus Airways, which operates one daily flight to Beirut, said all tickets are sold out until the end of this month.

According to Kombos, Cyprus can provide accommodation to 7000 evacuees for a short period. “The logic behind this arrangement is that evacuees from Lebanon must arrange their departure to their countries soon so that Cyprus can offer assistance to a larger number of evacuees,” he explained.

Since the conflict in the Middle East escalated, Cyprus has activated its “Estia” plan, which aims to turn the nearest European country to Lebanon into a hub for third-country nationals to transfer back to their own countries.

The Foreign Ministry said 11 countries had undertaken consultations with the ministry over the operation of the “Estia” plan.

Some countries have also sent troops to Cyprus to assist in the evacuation of their nationals, as Israeli forces intensify their action against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

Australian research finds link between snoring, elevated blood pressure

Share

Canberra, Oct 4 (IANS) Australian research has found a link between snoring and elevated blood pressure.

According to the study, which was conducted by sleep scientists from Flinders University in South Australia, people who regularly snore at night are more likely to have elevated blood pressure and uncontrolled hypertension, Xinhua news agency reported.

Hypertension occurs when the pressure in a person’s blood vessels is too high. It can cause serious damage to the heart and lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure and heart disease.

Blood pressure is recorded in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) as two numbers such as 120/80. The first number – the systolic blood pressure – measures the pressure in the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and the second – diastolic blood pressure – is the pressure as the heart relaxes before the next beat.

The study found that 15 per cent of 12,287 participants snored for more than 20 per cent of the night on average over a six-month monitoring period and that those with high snoring levels had a 3.8 mmHg higher systolic blood pressure and 4.5 mmHg higher diastolic blood pressure than participants who did not snore.

The Flinders University study was the first to use multiple night home-based monitoring technologies over a prolonged period to investigate the link between snoring and hypertension. Participants in the study were middle-aged and 88 percent were male.

“For the first time, we can objectively say that there is a significant connection between regular nighttime snoring and high blood pressure,” Bastien Lechat, lead author of the research from the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University, said in a media release on Wednesday.

“These results emphasise the significance of considering snoring as a factor in healthcare and treatment for sleep-related issues, especially in the context of managing hypertension.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.28 billion adults aged 30-79 years worldwide have hypertension and that 46 per cent of adults with hypertension are unaware they have the condition.
