IIT Delhi researchers develop ML tool to map extent of landslides

Share

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS) Researchers from the IIT Delhi on Monday announced the development of a ground-breaking cloud computing and machine learning-based tool that can help map a landslide’s extent using satellite data.

This easy-to-use and publicly-available tool ML-CASCADE requires an approximate date and location of a landslide event.

In case of a complex cluster of landslides, the tool can accurately map it within five minutes. And for a simple landslide, it can map within two minutes — critical for post-disaster damage assessment.

The underlying model, published in the prestigious Landslides journal, is trained on a large amount of satellite, terrain, vegetation, and soil data.

“Machine learning on geospatial data offers an unprecedented opportunity to overcome the drawbacks of index-based methods and integrate multiple diverse datasets to map landslides with high accuracy,” said Prof. Manabendra Saharia, Civil Engineering Department, IIT Delhi.

Saharia explained that landslides have traditionally been mapped by manually digitising over satellite imagery, which is costly, inaccurate, and time-consuming. However, field surveys and geological data collection cannot be done in large and remote areas.

ML-CASCADE was developed using 19 features with Sentinel-2 bands (pre- and post-landslide), and slope. It also included data from the NASA Digital Elevation Model, Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and differential Bare Soil Index – to detect fresh landslide development.

The tool is a dynamic machine-learning model that does not depend on pre-trained models. Instead, it builds a custom model based on user-provided inputs and satellite imagery. It adapts to local terrains and specific environmental factors. Further, the tool’s user interface has been designed in consultation with both technical and non-technical users to provide a simple and practical tool to disaster managers. It can be easily downloaded in multiple image formats, and be disseminated or used for further processing in GIS. It has Google Earth Engine as a backend, and thus requires no downloading of data.

The outputs take only minutes to generate, which would take hours on a local computer. The study extensively validated the tool over thousands of landslides, with two major events in the Himalayas (Kotrupi landslide, 2017) and Western Ghats (Kodagu landslide, 2018).

Using the tool, the IIT Delhi researchers aim to develop a national historical landslide inventory with spatial extents, which will be invaluable in developing landslide early warning systems. The ML tool can also be applied in mapping flood inundation, deforestation, sand mining, and other environmental challenges, the researchers said.

How targeted therapies are boosting outcomes for bone marrow cancer

Share

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS) Patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) — a type of cancer of the bone marrow — are seeing better outcomes with targeted therapies, said experts on Monday.

CML is a slow-growing cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood.

The US National Institute of Health (US) estimates that 1.2 to 1.5 million people worldwide are living with CML. The cancer has seen a notable rise in India, in recent years, with a typical diagnosis occurring in individuals aged 30-40 years.

According to data from Indian cancer registries, CML is the most common type of leukaemia diagnosed in the country. A previous study reported the annual incidence of CML in India to be 0.8 to 2.2 per 100,000 population.

Drugs known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that target BCR-ABL protein are the standard treatment for CML.

Dr. Tulika Seth, Professor of Haematology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), told IANS that the discovery of TKIs has revolutionised CML care.

“In recent years, targeted treatments like TKIs have provided relief for patients, especially when resistance to first-line therapies develops. However, maintaining adherence to treatment and regular follow-ups are essential in managing disease progression effectively,” Seth said.

Another is Asciminib, a medicine that specifically targets the ABL myristoyl pocket (STAMP).

These targeted medicines act directly on the BCR-ABL protein, a genetic mutation that drives the growth of cancer cells in CML.

Further, even with these therapies, patients must continue to monitor BCR-ABL levels, Dr. Arijit Nag, Consultant of Clinical Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant in Tata Medical Center, told IANS.

“In my practice, I have seen targeted therapies have revolutionised in the years and helped the management of CML, this does not mean that CML has ceased to be a chronic illness. Follow-up visits are recommended every three months for patients after commencing treatment,” Nag said.

If CML progresses to advanced stages, resistance can develop due to mutations in the BCR-ABL gene.

“This often requires switching to different TKIs or second-line therapies. Additionally, treatment intolerance — such as fatigue or gastrointestinal issues — can impact a patient’s ability to continue therapy,” she noted.

Striking the right balance between managing resistance and minimising intolerance requires individualised treatment plans and close monitoring to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The key is to regularly monitor BCR-ABL levels, especially in advanced stages of CML, as it guides treatment decisions and allows for timely adjustments to therapy, Seth said

According to the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) guidelines, periodic assessments are key to ensuring optimal disease management as the treatment evolves.

It is because BCR-ABL levels will determine whether or not the treatment is working, Nag explained.

Regular testing helps the patient and physician monitor how well the current therapy is working, and change the practice, if required, to best suit the patient’s needs.

The experts also called for building a strong support system of adherence, regular monitoring, and family support. This support is crucial, especially as patients progress to later-line therapies.

Thailand’s manufacturing sector expanded at slower rate in September

Share

Bangkok, Oct 1 (IANS) Thailand’s manufacturing sector maintained its upturn in September but expanded at a slower rate due to lower increases in output and new orders, a survey showed on Tuesday.

The Southeast Asian country’s manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) was recorded at 50.4 last month, easing from 52.0 in August, signalling an overall improvement in manufacturing sector performance and marking the slowest growth in four months, according to S&P Global.

A PMI reading above 50 indicates expansion in the manufacturing sector, while a reading below 50 reflects contraction, Xinhua news agency reported.

Despite both experiencing weakened expansion rates, new orders rose for the third-consecutive month and output grew for the fifth straight survey. This resulted in manufacturers being cautious about purchasing volumes, while backlogs of work rose for the fifth month running, S&P Global said in a statement.

Manufacturers continued to expand their workforces at a rapid pace, with employment growth remaining close to the survey-record high set in June, said Trevor Balchin, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Meanwhile, price pressures eased as average input prices fell at the fastest rate on record and output charges remained broadly stable, marking the end of a 41-month inflationary period, Balchin said.

Looking ahead, Thai manufacturers remained optimistic about output growth over the next 12 months, citing increased customer enquiries, new sales strategies, market expansion, a stronger economy and promotions, the survey showed.

Raipur, Oct 1 (IANS) As the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) completes its 10th anniversary on October 2, the transformation in people’s lives in Chhattisgarh steered by the ‘Swachhata Didis’, is stealing the spotlight among many other success stories of the ‘Clean India Mission’.On October 2, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the cleanliness drive, envisioning a nationwide movement to create a clean and hygienic India.

To mark the decade of ground-breaking initiative, a medical camp was organised in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, which saw the participation of students and locals including the Swachhata Didis. All of them shared happiness over the drastic changes in their lives, brought by this campaign.

The event showcased the efforts of Swachhata Didis, women responsible for maintaining community cleanliness and spreading awareness about sanitation.Krishna Aggarwal, one of the Swachhata Didis, spoke to IANS about people’s changing preferences for a cleaner society.”Now, people use dustbins, separating their waste into dry and wet categories. PM Modi, by personally participating in the campaign, inspired the public to keep their surroundings clean,” she said.

Urvashi Vaishnav, another Swachhta Didi, emphasised the shift in behaviour towards cleanliness and sanitation, particularly the end of open defecation.”Earlier, the lack of toilets forced people, especially women, to relieve themselves on the streets. Now, with toilets available in homes, this issue has been resolved, making our roads and villages cleaner,” she added.

Another Swachchta Didi Uttara Todar told IANS, “Every household is now more serious about waste management, and PM Modi has been a driving force in taking this campaign to new heights,” she stated.Doctors participating in the medical camp also lauded the mission’s success in reducing the spread of communicable diseases.

Dr Rupali Raut said that a significant drop was recorded in infections like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya due to improved hygiene and government initiatives like distributing mosquito repellents.”The mobile medical units launched by the Chhattisgarh government have also been providing vital in-home services,” she said.Dr Akanksha Singh echoed these sentiments, adding that diseases like diarrhoea and skin infections have declined considerably since the Swachh Bharat Mission’s launch.

“There has been a marked reduction in hygiene-related illnesses,” she noted.Students have also spotlighted the positive impact of the campaign on their lives.Dhanashree Shahu said, “Students are falling sick less frequently, which means more of us attend school regularly.”Bharatiya Sona said, “Earlier, dirty toilets and menstrual taboos made it difficult for girls to attend school. Now, with clean toilets and access to sanitary pads, more girls are attending school, and overall hygiene has improved.”

Pinky Geakwad said, “Earlier, there was a lot of dirt and stagnant water, which led to mosquito breeding and more illnesses. Now, this has stopped to a large extent, and diseases are spreading less.”Notably, the Swachh Bharat Mission has had a lasting impact on communities, not just in Chhattisgarh but across the country, improving the indexes of public health, hygiene and sanitation in the last decade.

No to DJ, Crackers in Religious Event, Processions in Hyderabad

Share

The Hyderabad City Commissioner, CV Anand, has issued an order prohibiting the use of DJs and firecrackers in the city, effective from today, October 1, 2024. The decision was made to curb noise pollution, as explained by the Commissioner.

Speaking on Tuesday, CV Anand mentioned that after receiving complaints through Dial 100, discussions were held with representatives of political parties and religious leaders in the city. Following these discussions, a ban has been imposed on DJs and firecrackers in Hyderabad. The ban will be enforced from today, particularly during religious rallies where DJs will not be permitted. However, microphones and sound systems will be allowed with limitations, and police clearance is mandatory for using sound systems. Specific decibel levels have been set for four zones in the city.

In residential areas, sound systems must not exceed 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night. Firecrackers are completely banned in religious rallies, and restrictions on high-volume equipment like DJs and sound mixers will remain. The prohibition will be in place from 10 PM to 6 AM, and in permitted areas, only low-volume sound systems will be allowed. There are also restrictions within 100 meters of hospitals, schools, colleges, and court premises.

Violations of the regulations will result in a five-year jail sentence along with a fine of one lakh rupees, warned Commissioner CV Anand. He also mentioned that repeated violations will incur a daily fine of ₹5,000. Under the BNS Act, offenders may face up to five years in prison along with additional fines.

Under CBN Rule, Brand Andhra Pradesh Takes a Major Beating Nationally

Share

Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, is increasingly facing challenging situations, with his administration under intense scrutiny. Once hailed as a seasoned leader and often positioned as a CEO rather than a traditional Chief Minister, Naidu’s leadership is now being questioned due to governance missteps and a string of controversies that have shaken public confidence.

One of the most damaging incidents involves a controversial claim made by Chandrababu, alleging that the sacred Tirumala Laddu Prasadam had been tainted with pork fat, animal fat, and fish oil. The remarks created a nationwide uproar, particularly given the religious significance of the Tirumala temple to Hindus across India. As the allegations came directly from the Chief Minister, they were taken seriously, but the fallout was swift and harsh. This naturally affected the brand image of Andhra Pradesh state nationally and globally. While AP’s brand image soared high under YS Jagan’s rule, it took a nosedive during CBN’s latest tenure.

Accusations pointed toward the former Chief Minister, YS Jaganmohan Reddy, and his faith. However, the allegations against Jagan did not hold up under scrutiny, and before long, it became clear that the claims about the Laddu Prasadam were baseless. Despite this, the misinformation had already spread, tarnishing Naidu’s credibility on a national scale.

For a brief moment, it seemed that Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had gained political ground. However, the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), led by Jaganmohan Reddy, quickly countered the narrative, presenting facts that discredited the allegations. In a significant blow to the Chandrababu Naidu administration, the YSRCP filed a petition in the Supreme Court, resulting in critical remarks from the judiciary regarding the incident. The political fallout has left Naidu and his allies scrambling for damage control, but the damage to his reputation appears severe. National media and political commentators are questioning whether Naidu and his party stooped to using Tirumala’s sacred Prasadam for political manipulation. The question remains: did the TDP attempt to weaponize religious sentiment for electoral gain?

The timing of this scandal is particularly troubling for Chandrababu Naidu, as his national image has taken a severe hit. With public trust eroding, his opponents have seized the opportunity to highlight his governance failures, leaving the alliance struggling to defend its actions. What once seemed like a well-oiled political machine now appears vulnerable and desperate.

Criticism of Chandrababu has been unprecedented, with even his long-standing ally, Pawan Kalyan, facing backlash. The controversy surrounding the Tirumala Prasadam, given its religious significance, has resonated with Hindus across the country. Many are now questioning Naidu’s moral and ethical judgment, and whether he can recover from this damaging episode remains to be seen.As the public discourse around Chandrababu’s leadership continues to sour, the once-formidable leader now finds himself in a precarious position, facing a wave of opposition and skepticism both from within Andhra Pradesh and on the national stage.

Bangladesh extends int’l bid deadline for dozens of offshore oil, gas blocks

Share

Dhaka, Oct 1 (IANS) The Bangladeshi government has extended the deadline to December for submitting bids for dozens of offshore oil and gas blocks.

The extension, announced recently by the state-owned Petrobangla (Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation), is aimed at providing international companies with a more accommodating timeline to prepare and submit proposals for 24 offshore blocks spread across 15 deep and nine shallow waters, Xinhua news agency reported.

Petrobangla in a notice said it extended the bid submission deadline to December 9, 2024 — a three-month extension from the initial deadline of September 9.

The time extension notice posted on the Petrobangla website also mentioned that all other terms and conditions of the bidding notice issued earlier will remain unchanged.

Petrobangla Chairman Zanendra Nath Sarker expressed the hope that more multinational companies will be able to join the bidding for the exploration of oil and gas in the Bay of Bengal following the extension of the deadline for submitting bids.

In a promotional seminar on May 8 this year, Petrobangla told reporters that seven international oil companies purchased bid documents, showing their eagerness to invest in oil and gas exploration in the Bay of Bengal.

SIT Stops Investigation after SC Comments: Tirupati Laddu Controversy

Share

In a significant development and what can be a rude shock to the AP state government, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has temporarily halted its investigation over the alleged ghee adulteration in Tirupati Laddu. The SIT’s decision to stop the investigation comes following a Supreme Court hearing on the laddu controversy on Monday (September 30). The court has sought the opinion of the Solicitor General on whether the SIT investigation, set up by the state government, should continue or if a different agency should conduct the inquiry.

As a result, the SIT has paused its probe until a decision is made by the Supreme Court regarding the issue. The court heard petitions filed by former TTD Chairman YV Subba Reddy and Subramanian Swamy, requesting an independent investigation into Chief Minister Chandrababu’s allegations that adulterated ghee was used in the preparation of the Tirupati laddu.

The SIT had conducted a three-day investigation into the ghee adulteration allegations and obtained key information from TTD officials, including the delay in filing complaints. The SIT also conducted inspections at the TTD’s marketing and procurement GM’s office.

“But I felt like we did because my mom was always doing a hundred million things just to make me happy, and we volunteered at soup kitchens on Thanksgiving.”After starting her career on “Barney and Friends” in the early 2000s, Gomez guest-starred on the shows “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” and in a couple of episodes of “Hannah Montana” starring Miley Cyrus before she got her her own show in the form of “Wizards of Waverly Place” in 2007.

For that, she is thought to have earned $30,000 per episode over the course of four seasons and became one of the highest-paid child stars in the process. The years after the series ended saw her net worth skyrocket into the tens of millions as she launched a successful pop career with a string of sold-out tours.

Gomez is actually worth an eye-watering $1.3 billion, according to Bloomberg, which has included the singer on its Billionaires Index for the very first time.
