NASA’s Europa Clipper ‘fuelled up & nearly ready to go’ on October 10

Share

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS) NASA’s Europa Clipper mission, scheduled for journey to Jupiter and its moon Europa, is “fuelled up and nearly ready to go” on October 10.

Europa Clipper is set to launch its first mission to conduct a detailed science investigation of Jupiter’s moon Europa aboard SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39A.

According to scientists, Europa has a salty ocean beneath its icy crust that could hold the building blocks necessary to sustain life.

“Fueled up and nearly ready to go! Technicians at @NASAKennedy have loaded the propellant and oxidizer that will flow to our spacecraft’s array of 24 engines as we explore Jupiter’s enigmatic moon Europa. The launch period opens on October 10!”, NASA said in a post on X.

Europa Clipper is slated to travel 2.6 billion kilometres to reach the Jupiter system, where it will arrive in 2030.

During its journey to Jupiter, it will make a flyby of Mars in February 2025, and then of Earth in December 2026. The spacecraft will use the gravity of each planet to increase its momentum, and with the help of these “gravity assists”, it will achieve the velocity needed to reach Jupiter in April 2030.

Its main science goal is to determine whether there are places below the surface of Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa, that could support life.

The team aims to understand the nature of the ice shell and the ocean beneath it, along with the moon’s composition and geology.

The spacecraft will orbit Jupiter and fly by Europa about 50 times. It will log another 800,000 kilometres while a suite of science instruments gathers data on the subsurface ocean, the ice crust, and the moon’s atmosphere.

The findings will help scientists better understand the astrobiological potential for habitable worlds beyond our planet.

Europa Clipper’s propulsion module is an aluminium cylinder 3 metres long and 1.5 metres wide. It holds 24 engines and 2,752.2 kilograms of propellant in two propulsion tanks, as well as the spacecraft’s helium pressurant tanks.

Healthcare sector at forefront of nanotechnology innovation

Share

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS) Healthcare industries are pioneering nanotechnology innovation with use in diagnostics, drug delivery, and medical imaging, according to a report on Monday.

Nanotechnology has the potential to transform numerous industries with a growing demand for sustainable materials, environmental remediation, faster electronics, and innovative therapies.

The report by GlobalData, a data and analytics company, showed that the healthcare and technology sectors are currently at the forefront of innovation witnessing rapid commercialisation.

In the technology sector, nanotechnology is enhancing the performance of electronic devices, helping to push forward the next era of advanced computing.

“Nanotechnology’s commercialisation varies greatly by sector due to a combination of factors. The first is the level of investment in research and development in each sector. Industries such as technology and healthcare have seen faster commercialisation due to high investment,” said Isabel Al-Dhahir, Principal Analyst, Thematic Intelligence at GlobalData.

“The complexity and regulatory hurdles associated with bringing nanotechnology products to market and mixed consumer perception of nanotechnology products in food and consumer goods can also impact commercialisation rates,” Al-Dhahir said.

To boost commercialisation of the advanced technology is the gaining of regulatory approvals.

This is further complicated by regional divergence in regulation and unclear frameworks.

Al-Dhahir noted that “the rapid pace of technological advancements in nanotechnology has outpaced the development of regulatory frameworks, leaving gaps in oversight and enforcement”.

Further, the report showed that “nanotechnology’s potential risks and benefits are still being studied”. This makes it more challenging for regulators to establish proper guidelines without sufficient scientific evidence.

Despite the challenges, the US, China, and some countries in the European Union are heavily investing in nanotechnology to secure a competitive edge in the global market.

They also believe that nanotechnology can drive economic growth, and address critical societal challenges.

Arab League chief calls on international community to back Lebanon

Share

Cairo, Sep 30 (IANS) Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit called on the international community on Monday to support Lebanon in the face of the Israeli offensive and its impacts, particularly the attacks on civilian areas.

In a statement, the chief of the Arab League expressed solidarity with Lebanon and its people amid the ongoing crisis.

“The Lebanese people have suffered greatly in recent years and need support now more than ever to navigate this serious situation,” he said, Xinhua news agency reported.

Aboul-Gheit expressed concern over developments in Lebanon, asserting his belief in the Lebanese people’s ability to maintain civil peace and avoid sectarian conflict.

He also condemned the ongoing series of Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths and nearly one million displaced persons.

Tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have sharply escalated following Israel’s shift in military focus from Gaza to the northern front, intensifying clashes that began on October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on Israel in solidarity with Hamas, prompting retaliatory strikes in Lebanon.
