Cabinet approves Rs 8,240 crore fund to develop reusable launch vehicle

Share

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) In an effort to develop the capability for an Indian crewed landing on the Moon by 2040, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the development of a reusable next-generation launch vehicle (NGLV) with a total fund of Rs 8,240 crore.

Space agency ISRO will develop a launch vehicle that will support a high payload and will be cost-effective, reusable, and commercially viable.

The funds will include the development costs, three developmental flights, essential facility establishment, programme management and launch campaign.

According to the cabinet, the NGLV will have three times the present payload capability with 1.5 times the cost compared to LVM3, and will also have reusability resulting in low-cost access to space and modular green propulsion systems.

The NGLV development project will be implemented with maximal participation from the Indian industry, which is also expected to invest in the manufacturing capacity at the outset itself, thereby allowing a seamless transition to the operational phase subsequent to the development.

The reusable rocket will be demonstrated with three development flights (D1, D2 and D3) with a target of 96 months (8 years) for the completion of the development phase, the government said.

Currently, India has achieved self-reliance in space transportation systems to launch satellites up to 10 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and 4 tonnes to Geo-Synchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) through the currently operational PSLV, GSLV, LVM3 & SSLV launch vehicles.

The NGLV will enable national and commercial missions, including the launch of human spaceflight missions to Bharatiya Antariksh Station, lunar/inter-planetary exploration missions along with communication and earth observation satellite constellations to Low Earth Orbit that will benefit the entire space ecosystem in the country. The goals of the Indian space programme require a new generation of human-rated launch vehicles with high payload capability and reusability.

Hence, the development of NGLV is taken up which is designed to have a maximum payload capability of 30 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit, which also has a reusable first stage.

Study shows poor sleep may worsen fatty liver disease

Share

New Delhi, Sep 17 (IANS) While a good night’s sleep is known to be crucial for overall health, a new study showed it can also prevent cirrhosis among individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Cirrhosis occurs when the liver is damaged for over a long duration and is replaced by scar tissue. The scarring prevents the liver from working properly, and can eventually lead to liver failure

The study led by researchers from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China showed an association between a healthy sleep pattern and a decreased risk of cirrhosis among NAFLD patients.

The study on 112,196 NAFLD patients found that poor sleep patterns were associated with an increased risk of progression to cirrhosis.

The benefits of good sleep were observed in participants, regardless of low or high genetic risk, according to the journal Hepatology International.

The study provides “more evidence that sleep is really underrated,” said Dr Abby Phillips, popularly known as LiverDoc, on social media platform X.

“You can’t change your genetic profile and neither can everyone check their genetic profile. But what can be done is get some good sleep every night,” he advised.

The human body requires an optimum sleep duration of 7-8 hours per night.

“Having a good night’s sleep (at least 7-8 hours) has innumerable benefits on liver health and this is something not many are aware of,” Phillips said.

Poor sleep is also known to be harmful to health and can lead to problems with memory and focus. It can also raise the risk of headaches, anxiety, and stress.

Another recent study, published in the journal Sleep shows that sleeping late may also raise the risk of early-onset type 2 diabetes.

In the study, people who went to bed after midnight had a 1.46-fold increased risk of developing early-onset diabetes — under the age of 40.

“Each one hour later in bedtime was associated with a 52 per cent increase in the risk of early-onset diabetes,” the study showed.

Egypt, Jordan warn of dangers from Gaza conflict, violations in West Bank

Share

Cairo, Sep 18 (IANS) Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and Jordanian King Abdullah II warned of the dangers of the ongoing Israeli war in the Gaza Strip and escalating violations in the West Bank.

During a phone conversation on Tuesday, the two leaders stressed the recent developments could escalate the conflict, negatively affecting all peoples of the region as well as international peace and security, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.

They reiterated their rejection of all attempts to undermine the Palestinian cause or turn the Palestinian territories into uninhabitable areas to force the displacement of the Palestinians, reports Xinhua news agency.

Both leaders emphasised the urgent need to end the war immediately and save Gaza from the devastating humanitarian catastrophe.

Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 kidnapped.

The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 41,252, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Tuesday.
