9 captive, commercial mines to commence coal production in FY25
New Delhi, Sep 12 (IANS) Nine captive and commercial mines are expected to commence coal production in this fiscal, the government informed on Thursday.
As of August 31, 55 captive/commercial coal mines are in production. Of these, 33 mines are allocated to the power sector, 12 to the non-regulated sector, and 10 mines are allocated for the sale of coal, according to Coal Ministry statement.
There has been significant growth in coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial mines in the April-August period this year, compared with the same period last year.
The ministry said its efforts have yielded impressive results, with remarkable year-over-year (YoY) growth in both coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial mines.
Coal production increased by 32 per cent, rising from 50.11 million tonnes (MT) in April-August 2023 to 65.99 MT during the same period in the current fiscal.
Similarly, coal dispatch from these mines also showed significant growth of 32 per cent, increasing from 55.70 MT to 73.58 MT this fiscal, the ministry informed.
“These substantial increases in both production and dispatch demonstrate the effectiveness of the Ministry’s initiatives and its commitment to enhancing India’s domestic coal supply and aligns with the broader national goals of energy sufficiency and economic growth, positioning India for a more secure and prosperous future,” the coal ministry noted.
India’s coal production and supply trends for the period from April to August 2024 show a positive trajectory, despite some short-term variations in the month of August, due to above-normal precipitation impacting the mining and mobility.
When it comes to the power sector, the supply reached 338.75 MT, a growth of 4.13 per cent over the 325.33 MT supplied during the same period last year.
As per the official data, coal production has risen steadily in the last four years from 730.9 million tonnes in 2019-20.
IIT Mandi develops method to monitor ageing of bridges real-time using traffic data
Mandi, Sep 12 (IANS) Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi on Thursday announced the development of an innovative method that uses traffic data to monitor the health of ageing bridges in real time.
Bridges endure repeated cyclic loads, including traffic, wind, and environmental conditions. These stresses can over time weaken the integrity of the structures, leading to potential catastrophic failures.
The method uses digital modelling to predict weak spots on bridges and strategically place sensors, enabling real-time monitoring and quick action without extensive equipment or traffic disruption.
The approach zeroes in on the most vulnerable parts of a bridge, allows agencies to optimise budgets, targets high-risk areas, and make faster decisions in emergencies like earthquakes or floods, enhancing public safety.
“Our approach focuses on monitoring only the critical zones of a bridge, significantly reducing costs and the need for extensive equipment,” said Dr. Subhamoy Sen, Associate Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, IIT Mandi.
Sen added the method leverages traffic data “to provide real-time assessments and make timely interventions, ensuring bridge safety and longevity without major traffic disruptions”.
The method focuses on the most critical areas rather than monitoring the entire structure.
In the research, published in the journal Structural Health Monitoring, the team depicted the innovative approach by developing a digital model of the bridge to predict how different traffic patterns impact various parts of the bridge over time.
This helped experts identify the areas most susceptible to damage, where fatigue-sensitive sensors could be installed to monitor stress and vibrations.
This real-time data, combined with traffic patterns from the digital model, allowed experts to track how traffic affects the bridge over time, the team said. If needed, adjustments to traffic flow and speed can be made to ensure the bridge’s safety and prevent damage.
Once the initial setup is complete, regular monitoring can be handled by less specialised personnel, further reducing costs and making it easier to apply to multiple bridges.
Two unpinned hand grenades found on highway in Istanbul
Istanbul, Sep 12 (IANS) Turkish police discovered two hand grenades with their safety pins removed on Thursday in the Beykoz district of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, according to local media reports.
The local residents noticed the grenades in a bag on the sidewalk of the highway leading to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, which spans the Bosphorus Strait, reports Xinhua news agency, quoting NTV broadcaster.
Upon receiving the alert, counter-terrorism units and bomb disposal teams were dispatched.
A video broadcast showed crime scene investigators at work, with police teams patrolling the area alongside armoured police vehicles.
The grenades have been sent to the Istanbul Police Department.
The incident led to traffic congestion on the highway, causing significant disruptions.
Bangladesh’s interim govt unveils plan to reform key sectors
Dhaka, Sep 12 (IANS) Bangladeshi interim government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has taken action to protect the rule of law and bolster the crisis-ridden economy since he took office.
As part of his bids to reform Bangladesh, Yunus on Wednesday announced that the government has decided to form six commissions to reform the judiciary, election system, administration, police, anti-corruption commission, and the constitution, Xinhua news agency reported.
He made the announcement in a television speech to the nation on Wednesday night, marking the first month of the interim government’s formation since August 8 after then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5.
According to Yunus, these commissions are expected to start their work on October 1 and finish within the next three months.
Yunus said reforming the police administration, public administration, judiciary, and anti-corruption commission, along with the election commission, is essential for holding the next election in a free and fair manner.
“I believe these reforms will also contribute to establishing a people-owned, accountable, and welfare-oriented state system,” said Yunus.
He called upon people from all walks of life to bring about reforms in their respective spheres.
“This is a responsibility for all of us. Bring reform in your own world. A nation’s reform cannot only be the government’s reform,” the chief adviser added.
Yunus said that based on the commissions’ reports, the interim government will organise discussions with major political parties in the next phase.
A comprehensive consultation with representatives from student bodies, civil society, political parties, and the government will be held for three to seven days at the final stage.
Yunus said the government is determined to create a democratic framework for the country.
Yunus reiterated that his government wants good relations with neighbouring countries, and relations should be based on fairness and equality.
Earlier on Wednesday, the central bank of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Bank, issued a notification regarding the formation of a six-member task force for ensuring the financial stability of the banking sector.
California declares state of emergency amid massive wildfires
Los Angeles, Sep 12 (IANS) California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as three massive wildfires continue to rage across four counties in Southern California.
Newsom travelled to Highland on Wednesday and proclaimed a state of emergency in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties in response to the Bridge Fire and in Orange and Riverside counties in response to the Airport Fire announced.
The governor’s office said it had secured federal assistance to support the response to the fast-moving Bridge, Airport and Line fires, reports Xinhua news agency.
The fires, which broke out last week, escalated over the weekend due to soaring temperatures and critically dry vegetation amid a record-setting heat wave across Southern California.
On Saturday, Newsom declared a state of emergency for the Line Fire in San Bernardino County.
On Monday, he activated the California National Guard to assist nearly 2,000 firefighters in battling the wildfire.
As of Wednesday evening, the Line Fire had scorched over 36,481 acres (147.6 square km) and was at 18 per cent contained, forcing mandatory evacuation orders for thousands of people, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.
The Bridge Fire increased over ten times in size in 24 hours, exploding from 4,000 acres (16.2 square km) on Tuesday to over 50,000 acres (202.3 square km) with zero containment. The fire broke out on Sunday in the Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County, nearly 100 km west of the Line Fire.
In an update Wednesday afternoon, officials said about 40 homes and cabins were destroyed by the blaze. There have been no reports of significant injuries or deaths.
Fire officials said that there are currently more than 1,000 structures threatened by the fire.
The third major wildfire in Southern California, the Airport fire, started Monday afternoon in Trabuco Canyon in Orange County. The fire had burned more than 23,000 acres (93.1 square km) by Wednesday night with five per cent containment.
The state has mobilised a massive air and ground response to contain the wildfires and protect communities, including nearly 6,000 boots on the ground and hundreds of engines, dozers and water tankers, as well as 51 helicopters and nine fixed-wing aircraft, said Newsom’s office.
