Zero tolerance to abuse of power, corruption

Share

Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei), Sep 10 (IANS) Brunei’s Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah stressed zero tolerance towards the abuse of power and corruption while chairing the board meetings of Brunei’s major energy companies, local media reported on Tuesday.

The Sultan chaired the board meeting of Brunei LNG and the boarding meeting of Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) taking place at the Prime Minister’s Office building, reports Xinhua news agency, quoting the local daily Borneo Bulletin.

The Brunei Sultan highlighted the importance of upholding business integrity during the execution of all business activities, with a focus on cost optimization while driving companies’ performances.

The Sultan reiterated that shareholders should continue to explore new investment opportunities and identify new technologies to remain competitive, the Borneo Bulletin reported.

According to the report, critical areas were addressed during the meeting, such as operational performance, safety, financials, and manpower development, charting the companies’ strategic direction for the coming years and beyond for both Brunei LNG and BGC.

Brunei is an oil-rich country located in the northern part of the Borneo island. The Brunei LNG was established in 1969 and is the largest gas producer in the country. To date, Brunei LNG has delivered over 7,500 cargoes to customers via LNG vessels owned by Brunei Gas Carriers.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels claim downing another US MQ-9 Reaper

Share

Sanna, Sep 10 (IANS) Houthi military spokesperson Yayha Saree said on Tuesday that Yemen’s air defence systems have shot down another American MQ-9 Reaper over Saada province.

“The US drone was shot down when it was spying and taking hostile measures over Saada in northwest Yemen”, Saree was quoted as saying by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.

Saree went on to say that the US drone was the second the Yemeni forces have downed during the past 72 hours.

The Yemeni spokesperson also hailed the anti-Israel operation carried out by Maher al-Jazi, the 39-year-old Jordanian citizen who had killed three Israelis at the border crossing between West Bank and Jordan on Sunday.

Saree noted that Yemen will continue its military operations against Israel until the regime ceases aggression against Gaza and lifts the siege of the Strip.

From the outset of the war in Gaza, the resistance groups in Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and Yemen have been carrying out anti-Israel operations in support of the Palestinian people and in order to reduce pressure on the “resistance” in Gaza.

On September 4, the US Central Command said that its naval forces had destroyed a missile system of the Houthi group in Yemen.

“In the past 24 hours, US Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed an Iranian-backed Houthi missile system in a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen,” it said in a post on social media platform X.

“It was determined this system presented an imminent threat to US and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” it said without providing further details.

This was the third Houthi missile system destroyed by the US military strikes over the past two days, according to the USCENTCOM.

Meanwhile, residents in the Yemeni central province of Ibb reported on social media platforms that a fighter jet launched an airstrike targeting the Houthi-controlled Al-Hamzah military installation in the province on Tuesday.

The Houthi group, which controls Ibb and several other northern provinces, including the capital, Sanaa, did not comment on the incident.

The Houthis have been launching missile and drone attacks targeting what it called “Israel-linked” ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November last year to show solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In response, the US-British naval coalition stationed in the waters has since January, conducted regular air raids and missile strikes against Houthi targets to deter the group.

North Korea’s Kim Jong Un announces plans to expand nuclear arsenal exponentially

Share

Seoul, Sep 10 (IANS) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced on Tuesday that the country is implementing a policy to exponentially increase its nuclear arsenal, local media reported.

In a speech marking North Korea’s founding anniversary on Monday, Kim emphasised the need to enhance the nation’s nuclear capabilities and readiness. He stated that a robust nuclear force is crucial for protecting the state’s security rights and addressing threats from the United States and its allies, Bdnews24 reported quoting the state media KCNA.

Kim described the current security environment as a “grave threat,” attributing this to what he views as a US-led nuclear military bloc in the region. He emphasised North Korea’s ongoing efforts to bolster its nuclear and missile capabilities amid rising regional tensions.

In response to Pyongyang’s actions, South Korea’s Deputy Defence Minister for Policy, Cho Chang-rae, along with his US and Japanese counterparts, condemned North Korea’s recent diversification of nuclear delivery systems and missile tests.

The three officials, meeting in Seoul, reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trilateral cooperation to maintain regional peace and counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. They announced plans for a second trilateral military exercise, named Freedom Edge.

Additionally, South Korea is scheduled to hold a defence ministerial meeting with members of the United Nations Command (UNC) on Tuesday.

The UNC, which is led by the US commander in South Korea, plays a key role in monitoring the heavily fortified border with North Korea.

Last month, Germany became the latest to join the UNC in South Korea helping police the heavily fortified border with North Korea and has committed to defend the South in the event of a war.

North Korea has criticised the UNC as an “illegal war organisation” and viewed Germany’s participation as escalating regional tensions.

NTR’s ‘Devara’: A Pan-Indian Epic Awaits Its Trailer

Share

The anticipation surrounding NTR’s upcoming pan-Indian film, “Devara,” is reaching fever pitch. With its captivating music and visually stunning posters, the film has already created a buzz among fans. The action saga is set to hit theaters on September 27th, and the highly anticipated trailer is just hours away.

While the promotional material released so far has offered glimpses of NTR’s powerful persona, the plot of “Devara” remains shrouded in mystery. There have been various speculations about the film’s narrative, but no official confirmation has been provided. Some believe that director Koratala Siva might have drawn inspiration from a Hollywood series for the script.

The teaser, which showcased a high-octane fight sequence, did little to shed light on the story. Beyond a dialogue about “courage” and “fear,” the director has remained tight-lipped about the film’s plot. The trailer is now expected to reveal a significant portion of the narrative.

Koratala Siva is known for his films that often carry strong social messages. Whether “Devara” will follow this trend remains to be seen. The director’s previous films, such as “Srimanthudu,” “Janatha Garage,” and “Bharat Ane Nenu,” have all featured compelling storylines and clear themes. Even the original title of “Mirchi” was changed from “Varadhi” to better reflect the film’s content.

With “Devara,” Koratala Siva has an opportunity to elevate his filmmaking to new heights. Insiders claim that he has poured his heart and soul into this project, crafting a powerful and engaging story. As the trailer finally arrives, audiences will get a clearer picture of what to expect from this highly anticipated pan-Indian epic.

PM Modi Hosts Abu Dhabi Crown Prince at Hyderabad House

Share

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to New Delhi on September 9, 2024. This was the Crown Prince’s first official visit to India since taking office. The two leaders held bilateral talks at the Hyderabad House to strengthen the ties between India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

PM Modi and the Crown Prince discussed a wide range of areas where the two countries can
cooperate, including politics, trade, investment, connectivity, energy, technology, education, and culture. India considers its relationship with the UAE to be of great importance, and this visit by the Crown Prince, who is part of the next generation of UAE leadership, highlights the significance India places on its ties with the UAE.

In addition to meeting with PM Modi, the Crown Prince also called on President Droupadi Murmu. He is scheduled to visit Mumbai on September 10 to participate in a Business Forum, where top business leaders from both countries will gather. Since PM Modi’s landmark visit to the UAE in August 2015, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 34 years, bilateral relations between the two countries have been elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

India is the UAE’s second-largest trading partner, while the UAE is India’s largest trading partner in the Arab world. Total trade between India and the UAE is projected to reach $100 billion by the end of the decade. In 2022-23, the bilateral trade between the two countries was about $85 billion, according to official data. The UAE is also among the top four investors in India in terms of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2022-23.

GST Council Reduces Tax on Cancer Drugs

Share

The GST Council has taken a significant step towards making cancer treatment more affordable in India. In a recent announcement, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed that the tax rate on cancer drugs has been reduced from 12% to 5%. This decision, which was made following a council meeting, will provide much-needed relief for patients seeking essential cancer medications.

The reduction in GST aligns with the government’s commitment to making cancer treatment more accessible, as highlighted in the 2024 Budget. In addition to the GST cut, three specific cancer medicines-Trastuzumab Deruxtecan, Osimertinib, and Durvalumab-were also exempted from customs duty. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden on patients and their families, making life-saving treatments more affordable.

The GST Council’s decision reflects the recommendations of a Parliamentary panel, which had previously called for the complete removal of GST on cancer medications. The panel emphasized the high costs associated with cancer treatment in India and suggested that cancer be recognized as a notifiable disease to raise awareness and improve reporting on cancer-related issues.

The government’s actions demonstrate a clear commitment to improving healthcare for cancer patients. The lower GST rates and customs duty exemptions are crucial steps towards making life-saving drugs more accessible and affordable, ultimately enhancing the quality of care for those battling cancer.
