Two Amur falcons tagged with satellite transmitters in Manipur to study migratory routes

Imphal, Nov 8 (IANS) Two Amur falcons have been tagged with satellite transmitters by a senior Wildlife Institute of India (WII) scientist in western Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Friday to analyse the migratory routes of the raptors.
Forest officials said that two Amur falcons, tagged with satellite transmitters, were given the names ‘Chiuluan-2’ and ‘Guangram’ with the approval of Manipur’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, Anurag Bajpai.
“Chiuluan-2 and Guangram are names of two important roosting villages of Amur falcon in Tamenglong district, bordering Assam and Nagaland,” a senior forest official told IANS.
He said that 11 Amur falcons, including two tagged with satellite transmitters, were released on Friday at Chiuluan village after these migratory birds were captured on Thursday from a roosting site by a team of Tamenglong Forest Division and local volunteers under the guidance of Dehradun-based WII scientist, Dr Suresh Kumar.
These tagged Amur falcons were released by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Tamenglong Kh. Hitler Singh in the presence of Suresh Kumar, Tamenglong RFO Joel Gangmei, the Chairman and village authority members of Chiuluan village, Rainforest Club Tamenglong members and staff of the Tamenglong Forest Division.
Besides the two satellite transmitters tagged falcons, two other falcons named Riangsuanei and Laisana, bearing rings with pfa.manipur@gmail.com imprinted on them were also released.
All the 11 Amur Falcon were also ringed with BNHS (Bombay Natural History Society) rings, numbering from C58352 to C58362.
This study programme was undertaken under the guidance of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
These majestic birds (Falco Amurensis), known as ‘Akhuaipuina’ (or ‘Kahuaipuina’) in Manipur and ‘Molulem’ in neighbouring Nagaland, embark on an incredible long-distance journey, travelling up to 22,000 km in a single year, all the way from eastern Asia to South Africa, and back during early autumn.
The long-distance migratory birds, a little smaller than the size of a pigeon, belonging to the falcon family, as in previous years, have now landed in large numbers in the forest-rich Tamenglong district.
To protect and provide support to the migratory birds, Manipur’s Noney and Tamenglong district authorities last month imposed a total ban on hunting, catching, killing, and selling of the seasonal winged guests by anyone in the district and nearby surrounding areas. Both districts share borders with Assam and Nagaland, which also serves as a crucial brief stopover for these birds before their subsequent journey.
Forest officials said that a female falcon, which was tagged with a satellite transmitter in Tamenglong district in 2018, had landed in Somalia after flying continuously for five days and eight hours and covering 5,700 km.
According to wildlife experts, Amur falcons usually arrive in Manipur, mostly in Tamenglong, about 145 km from Imphal, and parts of Nagaland and other northeastern states during the first and second week of October from their breeding grounds in northern China and southeastern Siberia.
After roosting for a little more than a month, they leave the state and fly towards the southern and eastern parts of Africa and again roost there a short time before flying towards their breeding grounds.
DFO Hitler Singh said that to spread awareness among the people to protect the migratory birds, the Forest Department, supported by local clubs and animal lovers’ groups, as in previous years, observed the “Amur Falcon Festival” in the first and second week of November.
A forest official in Kohima said that the state also serves as a crucial stopover for these birds — which at times number up to 100,000 — for rest and refuelling for a duration of three to four weeks during winter.
“The migratory birds’ presence in huge numbers holds immense ecological importance, as they naturally regulate pest populations and participate in vital pollination activities,” the official said, adding that the dedicated efforts of all concerned have significantly contributed to providing a secure passage to these avian species over the years.
The Amur falcon has been granted legal protection under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. Harming, hunting these birds or possessing their meat is a criminal offence, punishable by imprisonment for up to three years under the provisions of the Act, Nagaland officials pointed out.
Traditionally, Nagas and other tribals in the northeastern region, known for their love for meat, had for decades considered these birds as ‘god-sent’ when they were first noticed in 2012. Before 2012, thousands of birds were caught and consumed indiscriminately every year. However, massive efforts involving villagers and the village chiefs to protect the migratory birds in Nagaland have resulted in near-zero casualties since 2013. Both forest and tourism officials said that the conservation of Amur falcons and other migratory birds helped promote tourism in Nagaland as hundreds of tourists assembled during October-November along the lakes and water bodies in Wokha and adjoining districts adjacent to Assam.

Bangladesh launches lounge for millions of migrants at Dhaka airport

Dhaka, Nov 12 (IANS) The Bangladeshi government has launched a special lounge for the country’s millions of migrant workers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital, Dhaka.
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus inaugurated the lounge on Monday, terming migrant workers “nation builders.” He expressed his hope that the lounge would make their travel easy, reports Xinhua news agency.
The lounge, the first of its kind at the airport, will offer Bangladeshi migrant workers some space to rest and have subsidised food for refreshments.
More than 14 million Bangladeshis have reportedly gone abroad with jobs since 1976. Bangladesh mainly sends workers to Gulf states and Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia and Singapore, to bolster the inflow of remittances.
Remittances, one of the key sources of foreign exchange for the nation, totalled nearly $9 billion in the July-October period, central bank data showed.
Mossad warns Israelis in Thailand to increase vigilance, avoid mass gatherings

Jerusalem, Nov 12 (IANS) Israeli intelligence and security agencies on Tuesday called on the country’s citizens staying or visiting Thailand to increase vigilance and pay attention to updates following “recent information” and in light of the growing fear of harm to Israelis and Jews throughout Thailand.
“For the past several months, a number of events have been taking place in the Thai arena, which the Israeli security forces, in partnership with the security forces in Thailand, are working to foil,” revealed a statement issued by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office on behalf of the Intelligence and Special Task Force Mossad and the National Security Headquarters.
While it did not change the level of the travel warning for Thailand, the Israeli agencies urged for sharpening vigilance in Thailand and issued several guidelines, including avoiding attendance at events with many participants identified with Israel, with an emphasis on those that are announced in advance or places of recreation and gathering identified with Israel.
Insisting that these guidelines are valid for the entire country, without focusing on a specific area in Thailand, it also advised Israeli citizens to avoid updating location details and travel plans on social networks.
“It should be emphasised that, since the events of October 7 and the Iron Swords War, the efforts of Iran and its proxies to attack Israeli and Jewish targets around the world have been expanded. The Mossad and the Israeli security forces continue to work with their partners in the world to maintain the safety of Israelis and Jews,” the statement added.
On Monday, Israel’s National Security Council, in a message to the public, alerted its citizens abroad to be aware of “intentions of pro-Palestinian/terrorism supporters” to carry out violent attacks against Israelis, under the pretense of demonstrations and protests.
The advisory was issued after a pro-Palestinian mob attacked, in what the Israeli agencies said appeared like a coordinated attack, hundreds of Israelis who were in Amsterdam for a soccer match of an Israeli team on the night of November 7 and 8.
“In the past few days, there have been calls among pro-Palestinian/terrorist-supporter groups to harm Israelis and Jews, under the pretense of demonstrations and protests, taking advantage of mass gatherings (sports and cultural events) to maximize the damage and the media coverage. In addition, preparations to harm Israelis have been identified in several European cities, including Brussels (Belgium), major cities in the UK, Amsterdam (Netherlands), and Paris (France – around the upcoming match of the Israeli team on November 14),” the National Security Council stated.
“Given the dynamics of these incidents: independent parties who group online, their broad presence in various countries around the world, actual attempts to hold demonstrations and protests (some of them violent), and concerns that supporters of terrorism/lone wolf attackers will try to blend into these riots with the goal of carrying out an attack,” it added.
Ishiba’s minority govt on bumpy road despite reassuming Japan’s premiership

Tokyo, Nov 12 (IANS) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba held onto his position in a rare runoff vote, marking the first such election in the House of Representatives in three decades and underscoring the difficulties facing his leadership as he moves forward with a minority government amid mounting obstacles.
The first round of lower house voting for the country’s next prime minister saw Ishiba take the lead but fall short of a majority, prompting a runoff against Constitutional Democratic Party leader Yoshihiko Noda, Xinhua news agency reported.
Ishiba, 67, ultimately secured the position with 221 votes in the 465-seat lower house against Noda’s 160, but political analysts highlighted that his government will now rely heavily on opposition cooperation to pass critical legislation, as the ruling coalition’s minority status will necessitate support from other parties for the passage of laws and budget approvals.
In the recent general election, Japan’s ruling coalition, consisting of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) led by Ishiba and its ally, Komeito, suffered a significant setback, losing its long-held majority and reducing its seats to 215, well below the 233-seat majority threshold required for smooth governance.
After assuming premiership, Ishiba reshuffled his cabinet, replacing only the ministers who were not re-elected in the lower house.
The foremost challenge for Ishiba’s new cabinet is to establish fresh economic policies and a new budget. The LDP is actively seeking collaboration with the Democratic Party for the People, which has shown a relatively positive response.
The two parties are in discussions regarding tax reform, aiming to establish a “partial alliance” for cooperation on specific policies.
However, as per the latest inter-party negotiations, the opposition now holds seven out of the 17 committee chair positions in the House of Representatives, including the Budget Committee, which is crucial for budget deliberations. The last time the opposition chaired this committee was 30 years ago, signaling a significant shift in Japan’s political landscape.
Economists pointed out that the Ishiba cabinet will face limited fiscal flexibility. Hideo Kumano, chief economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute, emphasised that the cabinet’s ability to maneuver financially is heavily restricted.
Atsushi Koketsu, emeritus professor at Yamaguchi University, said that Japanese politics will now evolve through checks and balances between the ruling and opposition parties as the opposition chairing the Budget Committee marks a major shift in Japanese politics.
Worse still, the LDP is still grappling with the slush funds scandal, which remains a potential liability. Shortly after the House of Representatives election, the LDP decided to reinstate former party officials who had previously run as independents after facing disciplinary actions, which once again stirred public dissatisfaction.
The opposition parties are reportedly planning to demand a renewed investigation into the scandal, pushing for implicated lawmakers to testify before an ethics committee. It remains uncertain whether the LDP can overcome this scandal and regain voter confidence.
Dhanush Bets Big on Anand L. Rai’s Comeback!

Dhanush’s decision to back a director whose recent works have been far from successful is like a gambler placing a bet on a losing hand-but then again, sometimes even the most improbable bets pay off. Dhanush, who recently found success with Rayan, his directorial debut, has decided to extend his trust to Bollywood director Anand L. Rai, despite Rai’s streak of flops. Dhanush’s belief in Rai is particularly surprising given the recent failures, such as Raksha Bandhan and Zero. But Dhanush isn’t the type to abandon ship easily, especially when there’s unfinished business with a director who gave him a memorable debut in Raanjhanaa.
Though Rai’s track record in recent years has been rocky, it seems Dhanush has faith in the director’s potential for redemption. Despite Zero failing to make a mark and Rangrezz not hitting the high notes, Dhanush is sticking by the director. Their previous work together made an impression, and Dhanush is all about repaying debts in a world where loyalty often outweighs logic. The new collaboration is a romantic comedy titled Teri Ishq Mein, and while Rai’s recent missteps are still fresh in everyone’s mind, Dhanush seems to believe in the power of a second chance, both for the director and for himself.
The latest buzz reveals that Kriti Sanon will star opposite Dhanush in Teri Ishq Mein, with AR Rahman scoring the music. The film is set to be a pan-India release, with a parallel Telugu version, which could increase its reach. While the project is drawing attention, there’s a touch of skepticism surrounding Rai’s ability to deliver a hit. Yet, Dhanush isn’t deterred, and he continues to show faith in the director’s craft. Perhaps Dhanush sees something in Rai that others don’t-Aa director with the potential to hit it big once again.
In the world of cinema, where success can be as fleeting as a passing cloud, Dhanush’s loyalty to Anand L. Rai is a testament to the unpredictable nature of the industry. It’s like waiting for the perfect shot-you never know when it’s going to happen, but when it does, it’ll make all the misses worth it. Let’s just hope this movie doesn’t end up being a comedy… for the wrong reasons!
PK Fans Angry, Posani In Trouble

Just a couple of days back, the government of Andhra Pradesh instigated police action against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma. The complaint is that Varma had earlier shared multiple morphed pictures of Chandrababu, Lokesh and Brahmani.
Today, it is the turn of another filmmaker, Posani Krishnamurali to face the heat from the AP police department.
Incidentally, Janasena followers, primarily Pawan Kalyan’s fans complained against Posani at the Rajahmundry police station about the derogatory posts that the actor had shared in the past.
Rajahmundry police have now received a complaint in writing from Pawan’s fans that Posani had made several objectionable and offensive statements against Pawan and his family in the past. The police promised to take sufficient action against Posani for his misdeeds in the past. A
s it appears, it is a matter of time before Posani comes under the radar, and so does RGV for their earlier actions against the NDA leaders while Jagan was the CM. The new NDA government in AP is evidently going super hard against these YCP supporter wing in the Telugu film industry.
