ChatGPT a hit among students who struggle to pay attention

Share

New Delhi, Aug 28 (IANS) Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like Open AI’s ChatGPT are widespread hits among students who have problems paying attention, according to a study on Wednesday.

Researchers in Sweden looked into how teenagers related to how they used and thought of generative AI chatbots as helpful for their homework. Their findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence.

The scientists from Lund University carried out two investigations. The first included 485 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16; while the second had 359 pupils aged 15 to 19.

According to the surveys, older students used AI chatbots at a rate of roughly 53 per cent while younger kids used them at a rate of about 15 per cent. A plausible rationale could be that advanced learners receive more intricate projects and, consequently, may employ AI systems more frequently.

“Students with more attention to challenges found these tools particularly useful, especially for completing assignments. This highlights these tools’ role as potential support for students struggling with cognitive processes crucial for academic success,” said Johan Klarin, a school psychologist and research assistant at the Department of Psychology at the varsity.

More importantly, the results of the experiments demonstrated that students who had greater difficulty with attention issues thought generative AI was far more helpful for their coursework than their classmates. According to the researchers, one explanation could be that these pupils experience higher productivity gains than their peers.

The findings aim to inform educators, policymakers, and technology developers about the role of AI in education and its balance with academic integrity.

However, the study’s limitations include self-reported data and limited generalisation, which prompt the need for more studies like this to be conducted so that more concrete opinions can be formed.

Governments commit new funding to protect Australians from natural disasters

Share

Canberra, Aug 28 (IANS) Australia’s federal, state and territory governments have committed new funding for projects to improve the nation’s natural disaster defence.

Jenny McAllister, Minister for Emergency Management, announced on Wednesday that 164 projects will share in 387 million Australian dollar ($262.7 million) in funding under an initiative to better protect Australians from natural disasters, Xinhua news agency reported.

Of the funding, 200 million AUD ($136 million) will come from the second round of distributions from the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF), with the rest to be contributed by the states and territories.

McAllister said that Australians should expect more frequent and intense natural disasters as a result of climate change.

“By working with all levels of government to make significant investments in mitigation projects, we are reducing the risks and impacts Australians face during disasters,” she said.

“This means better outcomes for communities while reducing clean up and recovery costs.”

Established in 2023, the DRF is the federal government’s flagship initiative to improve natural disaster resilience and risk reduction.

Projects that were awarded funding on Wednesday include levee upgrades, coastline restoration and warning system upgrades.

An emergency evacuation centre in the state of Western Australia will receive 15.7 million AUD ($10.6 million) for upgrade works to make it cyclone-ready, while 6.8 million AUD ($4.6 million) has been allocated for flood works in western New South Wales.

The DRF was set up with an initial 1 billion AUD ($680 million) to spend over five years. The federal government in 2023 committed 200 million AUD in funding for more than 180 projects under the first round of DRF distributions.

Iran gets first woman as government spokesperson

Share

Tehran, Aug 28 (IANS) In another first, a woman will be the public face of the new Iranian government with Fatemeh Mohajerani being appointed the government spokesperson of Masoud Pezeshkian regime.

The appointment was made by President Pezeshkian in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Iranian media reported.

Mohajerani, 54, is a Doctor of Business Administration from Edinburgh and has earlier served as the head of the Technical and Vocational Training University of Shariati (for women) in the 11th government.

Mohajerani was named the head of the Center for Brilliant Talents by then-Education Minister Seyyed Mohammad Bat’hai in 2017 and has held other positions in the Education Ministry too.

This is the latest appointment of a woman to a senior position. President Pezeshkian had, last week, appointed Shina Ansari as Iran’s Deputy President and Head of the Department of Environment.

Ansari, whose LinkedIn profile describes her as an experienced environmental specialist with a demonstrated history of working in environmental services and skilled in waste, RCRA, sustainable development, and environmental compliance, replaces Ali Salajegheh as head of the Department of Environment.

A PhD in Environmental Management from the Science & Research University, she was presently the Advisor at the Air Quality Control Centre at Tehran Municipality and previously had been Head of Environment and Sustainable Development at the Municipality and General Director of the Bureau of Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Monitoring in the Department of Environment.

Pezeshkian’s cabinet also has (post-1979 Islamic Revolution) Iran’s second woman minister with Farzaneh Sadeq Malvajard being approved as the Roads and Urban Development Minister. The Deputy Minister of Urban Planning and Architecture from January 2019 to July 2023, she got 230 out of 285-odd lawmakers present and voting despite some opposition when her name was read out in Parliament when the ministerial choices were submitted earlier this month.

Sadeq, 48, follows Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi who was Health and Medical Education Minister in populist President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s second government (2009-13).

Yangon, Aug 28 (IANS) Waste bananas in Myanmar are being transformed into value-added products, providing additional income for local farmers and creating new business opportunities, the state media reported on Wednesday.

The raw materials for these value-added products are primarily sourced from Ayeyarwady, Mandalay, and Bago regions, where bananas are mainly cultivated, Xinhua news agency reported quoting Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV).

Basic and advanced courses on turning waste bananas into value-added products are being conducted in the regions and states of Bago, Ayeyarwady, Shan, Mandalay and Yangon, as per the report.

The banana-based products included slippers, mats, towels, and bags.

The report, citing U Myint Thein, founder of Green Banana Myanmar, said that the use of banana-based products, unlike plastic ones, does not harm the environment.

Awareness programmes on the benefits of banana cultivation, including the potential to sell banana trunks for additional income, are also being conducted.

Hyderabad’s HYDRA: A Forceful Crackdown on Illegal Structures

Share

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRA), a recently established initiative by the Telangana government, has taken the state by storm with its aggressive approach to identifying and demolishing illegal structures. This move has sparked significant debate and drawn attention to the issue of unauthorized construction on government land.

HYDRA’s actions gained widespread attention with the demolition of the N Convention center, which the agency deemed to be an illegal structure lacking proper permissions. This bold move has emboldened others to come forward with complaints regarding alleged irregularities in various educational institutions, including those run by prominent figures like Owaisi and Malla Reddy.

Adding a political dimension to the issue, some BJP leaders have questioned whether HYDRA would dare to take action against institutions suspected of being built on encroached land.

Amidst this controversy, HYDRA Commissioner AV Ranganath made a statement that has garnered mixed reactions. He declared that no illegal structure would be spared and that action would be taken against all offenders, regardless of affiliation. However, he acknowledged the potential impact on students and expressed concern about their academic future.

According to Eenadu, the Commissioner stated that although institutions might have been built on encroached land, harming students’ education is a primary concern. He proposed providing institutions with time to rectify their situation before facing decisive action, irrespective of their political affiliations. Furthermore, he emphasized that even religious structures like Dharma Satrams wouldn’t be exempt from demolition if found to be within FTL (Full Tank Level) limits. He also clarified that HYDRA wouldn’t issue prior notices before undertaking demolitions.

HYDRA’s actions, while applauded by some for ensuring transparency and protecting public assets, have also raised concerns about the potential disruption to educational institutions and the lack of due process. The situation remains fluid, and it will be interesting to see how HYDRA navigates these complexities and balances its goals of protecting public land with the well-being of students.
