Polaris Dawn-SpaceX mission: Crew safety paramount, says Musk
New Delhi, Aug 26 (IANS) Crew safety is paramount, said Elon Musk on Monday, a day ahead of the launch of SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn spacecraft to low-Earth orbit.
The four-member mission, expected to conduct the first-ever ‘all-civilian’ spacewalk, will lift off onboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 on Tuesday at 3:38 a.m. ET (1:08 pm IST) from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida
The first commercial spaceflight mission with a spacewalk will drive billionaire Jared Isaacman, along with three others on a free-flying mission.
It is expected to fly higher than any crewed mission since the Apollo Programme ended in the 1970s, “endeavouring to reach the highest Earth orbit ever flown”.
“The Polaris Programme mission readiness review just finished and we are currently go for launch in just over 24 hours,” said SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, in a post on X.com.
“Crew safety is absolutely paramount and this mission carries more risk than usual, as it will be the furthest humans have travelled from Earth since Apollo and the first commercial spacewalk!” he added.
It is the first mission under “Polaris Programme” by Isaacman — the founder of Shift4, an online payment processing company.
Isaacman was also the commander of the first “all-civilian” space mission Inspiration4, launched in 2021. He purchased three spaceflights with SpaceX, and named the series “Polaris Programme”.
SpaceX informed that “Polaris Dawn and SpaceX completed a full rehearsal of launch”. It added that the Falcon 9 also completed its “static fire test” ahead of the big launch.
“If any concerns arise, the launch will be postponed until those concerns are addressed,” Musk said.
Besides Isaacman, the crew includes pilot Scott “Kidd” Poteet, a retired lieutenant colonel in the US Air Force who served as the mission director for Inspiration4, mission specialist Sarah Gillis, who oversees SpaceX’s astronaut training programme, and medical officer Anna Menon, who manages the development of SpaceX’s crew operations while also serving the company’s mission control.
The crew will perform the first-ever extravehicular activity (EVA) by commercial astronauts, wearing EVA suits developed by SpaceX.
They are also expected to perform 36 research studies and experiments from 31 partner institutions designed to advance both human health on Earth and during long-duration spaceflight, and test Starlink laser-based communications in space.
Meanwhile, Musk noted that SpaceX will launch rockets/spacecraft every second day. The company will also deliver more than “90 per cent payloads” to space in 2024.
“SpaceX is doing a major launch every about 3 days now. Next year, a launch every about 2 days,” Musk said.
“We will probably deliver close to 90 per cent of payload mass to Earth orbit and beyond this year. Great work by a great team!” he added.
Iranian, Qatari discuss bilateral ties, Gaza situation
Tehran, Aug 27 (IANS) Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani exchanged views on bilateral ties and the situation in Gaza.
During their meeting on Monday, the two sides reviewed joint efforts to expand bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing and accelerating the implementation of previously signed agreements, according to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
They also discussed the developments of the Israeli “crimes” in Gaza, reports Xinhua news agency, citing the ministry statement.
Noting that the Israeli approach “escalated tension and expanded the conflict in the region,” Araghchi voiced Iran’s support for any ceasefire agreement Hamas would accept.
“The two sides paid tribute to the martyred Iranian President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian and reviewed the efforts made to develop relations,” the ministry statement read.
Both leaders also stressed their special commitment to pursue and implement the agreements reached between the two nations.
The Qatari Foreign Minister, who arrived in Tehran on Monday, called for continued consultation with Iran to help ensure stability and security in the West Asia region and to support the Palestinian people.
PM Modi dials Russian President Putin, shares ‘insights’ from recent Ukraine visit
New Delhi/Moscow, April 27 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin following his landmark visit to Ukraine, last week.
“Spoke with President Putin today. Discussed measures to further strengthen Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Exchanged perspectives on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and my insights from the recent visit to Ukraine. Reiterated India’s firm commitment to support an early, abiding and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” PM Modi posted on X after the phone call.
On Monday evening, Prime Minister Modi had dialled US President Joe Biden, discussing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and underscoring India’s consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
“While discussing the situation in Ukraine, PM Modi briefed President Biden on his recent visit to Ukraine. He reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy and expressed full support for early return of peace and stability,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a late night statement following the phone call between the two leaders.
Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister had spoken with Australian PM Anthony Albanese as both leaders not only discussed bilateral relations but also cooperation in the multilateral fora, including the Quad grouping which also includes the United States and Japan.
Following PM Modi’s visit to Kyiv last Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had said that India supports his country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Today, history was made. The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi made his first visit to Ukraine since our country’s independence, on the eve of our Independence Day. Today, we reached an agreement on four documents between Ukraine and India, covering the medical field, agricultural cooperation, humanitarian relations, and culture,” said Zelensky after the end of diplomatic engagements with PM Modi.
During his talks with Zelensky, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s principled position and commitment to a peaceful settlement to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. He also reiterated India’s readiness to contribute in “all possible ways” to facilitate the speedy return of peace in the region.
“My visit to Ukraine was historic. I came to this great nation with the aim of deepening India-Ukraine friendship. I had productive talks with President Zelensky. India firmly believes that peace must always prevail. I thank the Government and people of Ukraine for their hospitality,” said PM Modi after the bilateral discussions in Kyiv.
Last month, during his visit to Moscow, Prime Minister Modi had held extensive discussions with the Russian President to find a solution to end the conflict in Ukraine.
While mentioning the long-standing friendship and good relations between the two countries, Putin also acknowledged PM Modi’s initiative on ending the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
“We had the opportunity to discuss practically all issues in an informal setting. I am grateful to you for the attention you are paying to the most pressing issues, including trying to find some ways to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, and of course, first and foremost, peacefully,” said Putin on July 9.
Bulgaria President calls for parliamentary elections on October 27
Sofia, Aug 27 (IANS) Bulgarian President Rumen Radev on Tuesday signed a decree to hold parliamentary elections on October 27, his press office said in a statement.
The statement said Radev also appointed a caretaker government led by current caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev for the interim period, Xinhua news agency reported.
Glavchev, 61, was head of the Bulgarian National Audit Office when he was appointed caretaker Prime Minister for the first time in April this year. In 2017, he briefly served as President of the National Assembly, the country’s Parliament.
The elections and the appointment of a caretaker government became compulsory after the Parliament failed to elect a regular Cabinet in June this year.
The elections will be Bulgaria’s seventh in three-and-a-half years due to an inability to reach a simple majority in the Parliament.
The European nation with a population of around 6.7 million, political instability has gripped Bulgaria since 2020 when mass protests broke out against ‘corrupt politicians’ who reportedly allowed oligarchs to take control of the state institutions.
However, only two out of the six previous snap polls resulted in an elected government. An on both occasions, the government fell down after reform-oriented politicians attempted to cut off the country’s energy and security reliance on Russia.
