Thailand court dismisses PM Srettha Thavisin over breach of ethics
Bangkok, Aug 14 (IANS) Exactly a week after dissolving the main opposition Move Forward Party, Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office over breach of ethics for appointing a former lawyer to his cabinet who had been jailed 16 years ago.
The judges voted 5-4 to oust Thavisin after ruling that the Prime Minister had violated the constitution by appointing Pichit Chuenban as a minister in his office.
As many as 40 former Senators had petitioned the court, questioning Thavisin’s appointment despite the country’s constitution clearly stipulating that ministers must be “of evident integrity” and their behavior must comply with ethical standards.
Srettha, a real estate mogul, entered the often shaky Thai political landscape only last year.
In August 2023, he was elected as the Southeast Asian kingdom’s new PM after winning a simple majority in a parliamentary vote, setting the stage for Pheu Thai Party’s candidate to form the country’s next government.
Local media reported that Deputy PM Phumtham Wechayachai is likely to be appointed as a caretaker PM till the country’s Parliament is convened to vote for the next Prime Minister.
On August 7, the same court had dissolved the main opposition Move Forward Party, ruling its efforts to amend a law against defaming the kingdom’s royal family violated the constitution.
The court had also imposed a ban on 11 members of the party’s executive board from political activity for 10 years, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Move Forward Party had emerged as the largest party in the lower house of the National Assembly in Thailand’s general election last year, but its prime minister candidate fell short of securing the majority support of parliamentarians.
The lese-majeste law, or Section 112 of the Criminal Code, stipulates that whoever defames, insults or threatens the king, the queen, the heir-apparent or the regent shall be punished with imprisonment of three to 15 years.
40 per cent of Biden’s major IRA manufacturing projects delayed
Washington, Aug 14 (IANS) About 40 per cent of “the biggest US manufacturing investments” announced in the first year of US President Joe Biden’s acts to strengthen its cleantech and semiconductor supply chain have been delayed or paused, a media report said.
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Chips and Science Act, launched in 2022, offered more than $400 billion in tax credits, loans and grants to boost the US cleantech and semiconductor manufacturing development, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a Financial Times report.
In the first year of the program, more than $220 billion were announced. Yet, $84 billion has been delayed for two months to several years or paused indefinitely, a Financial Times investigation found.
“Slow government rollout of Chips Act funding for semiconductor projects and lack of clarity on IRA rules have left several projects at a standstill,” it said.
Due to uncertainty over tax credit rules for hydrogen, Nel Hydrogen, an electrolyser manufacturer, has paused its $400-million factory project in Michigan. Due to the lack of clarity over the IRA’s electric vehicle regulations, Anovion, a battery parts manufacturer in Georgia, delayed its $800-million factory by more than a year.
The delays raised doubts on Biden’s ability to keep his promise to deliver jobs, the report said.
Victim of Japan’s sexual slavery urges S. Korean govt’s intervention for compensation
Seoul, Aug 14 (IANS) Lee Yong-soo, an outspoken South Korean victim of Japan’s wartime military sexual slavery, urged the government on Wednesday to proactively intervene in securing compensation from Japan.
The 96-year-old victim made the call in an interview with Yonhap News Agency during an event marking the Memorial Day for victims of Japan’s sexual enslavement of Korean women to serve front-line soldiers during World War II.
The August 14 memorial day was designated in 2017 in honour of the late Kim Hak-sun who was the first to come forward publicly and testify about her experience as a victim on August 14, 1991.
“It has been eight months since we won the second compensation suit against the Japanese government. … It’s time for the South Korean government to step in to secure compensation proactively,” Lee said.
Last year, the Seoul High Court overturned a lower court’s rejection of a damages suit filed by 16 victims of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery, including Lee, and ordered Japan to pay the compensation requested by the victims.
The ruling was finalised as Japan did not appeal, but it remains unclear whether the compensation will be paid, given Japan’s inaction.
“With only nine surviving victims now, (the compensation issue) should be resolved while they are still alive,” she said.
Lee said she considers Japan’s decision not to appeal to be a “silent apology”, adding, “I will respond with silence as well.”
“What remains is the execution of the compensation payment. Our government should conduct consultations with Japan on follow-up measures,” she said, urging a “proactive” role from the government.
