Punjab researchers develop transparent spintronic interface for quantum devices
New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) Scientists at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) in Mohali, an autonomous research institution under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have successfully produced a transparent conducting interface between two insulating materials.
This interface hosts a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with room temperature spin polarisation, enabling the creation of see-through devices that efficiently conduct spin currents.
Led by Prof. Suvankar Chakraverty at the INST, the team achieved this by growing superlattices and heterostructures of oxide materials, specifically the chemicals LaFeO3 and SrTiO3.
The researchers developed an innovative transparent layer between two insulating materials that allows electrons to move in a two-dimensional plane at room temperature with their spins — an intrinsic property of electrons — aligned in the same direction. This breakthrough could revolutionise data transfer in electronic devices and significantly increase data storage capacity in quantum devices.
The quest for new functionalities in modern electronics has led scientists to explore the manipulation of the electron’s spin degree of freedom, alongside its charge, giving rise to a new field known as spintronics. Although spintronics has long held theoretical promise, its exotic behaviours — such as spin currents and manipulation — remained elusive until recently.
Advances in materials and fabrication techniques at the nanoscale have enabled the creation of condensed matter systems exhibiting these properties, paving the way for a new era of spintronic devices with capabilities beyond traditional electronics.
The LaFeO3-SrTiO3 interface, exhibiting room temperature spin polarisation, showed unusual phenomena such as negative magnetoresistance and the anomalous Hall effect due to a structural transition in SrTiO3 at the interface. These features are crucial for spintronic quantum-device applications.
By manipulating spin in transparent materials, the researchers have unlocked new possibilities for light-controlled spintronics, which are impossible with traditional charge-based devices. This transparency allows for the integration of spintronic devices within existing displays or solar cells, potentially leading to advanced device architectures like transparent phone screens that process information with spin currents or solar cells that both generate electricity and manipulate spin.
The realisation of a conducting transparent oxide interface with spin polarisation at high temperatures may open up new frontiers in quantum-device physics, particularly in the fields of transparent spin-electronics, dissipation-less electronics, and quantum devices applicable for next-generation data storage and quantum computing.

New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) The computer whiz kid, long defined as the nerd who stays up all night dissembling computers, harkens back to the 80s, but a new study reveals that this image has been broadened, with creativity and a collaborative manner now being prioritised.
The study by King’s College London and the University of Reading in the UK revealed a more nuanced understanding of the ‘ideal’ computer science student among young people, challenging traditional stereotypes of socially awkward, highly intelligent males who excel in detail-oriented tasks but lack interpersonal skills.
The research analysed responses from over 3,000 secondary school students aged 11-16 in England, totaling around 9,000 entries. The findings indicate that while intelligence remains a valued trait, young people appreciate a broader set of characteristics in computer science students, including creativity and collaboration.
Professor Billy Wong from the University of Reading called the news “encouraging to widen participation in computer science education”.
Wong said, “stereotypes persist because they have a basis, but they can also discourage certain groups from pursuing computer science”.
The findings showed along with “being knowledgeable and hardworking”, “softer skills such as creativity and collaboration” also matter, said Wong.
“This challenges the outdated stereotype of computer scientists as being merely ‘clever’ but lacking social skills.”
Key findings from the study include the identification of eight main clusters of characteristics associated with the ideal computer science student: smart and clever, knowledgeable and interested,
Determined and hardworking, kind and helpful, creative, independent, confident, and collaborative. The research also found that students aspiring to careers in computer science tend to value a diverse range of traits beyond just intelligence.
Notably, girls were more likely to describe the ideal computer science student as independent, while being less likely to emphasise kindness and helpfulness. Students from less advantaged backgrounds were more likely to prioritise intelligence as the most important trait.
Professor Wong emphasised that these insights can assist educators and policymakers in promoting a more inclusive image of computer science, potentially encouraging a wider range of young people to consider the field.
Presidential Security Service chief of South Korea named as new Defence Minister
Seoul, Aug 12 (IANS) Defence Minister nominee Kim Yong-Hyun, the head of the Presidential Security Service, is a retired three-star Army general, considered to be well-versed in President Yoon Suk Yeol’s security initiatives as a close aide.
After a parliamentary hearing, the 65-year-old is set to replace Shin Won-sik as Defence Minister, with Shin being named as the new presidential national security adviser, Yonhap news agency reported.
A graduate of the Korea Military Academy in 1982, Kim held various prominent posts in the military, such as leading the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s Chief Directorate of Operations, before retiring in 2017.
Kim, who attended the same high school as Yoon, advised him on security and foreign policies during his presidential campaign before his election in March 2022. Yoon is one year junior to Kim.
After Yoon’s election, Kim led efforts to relocate the presidential office from Cheong Wa Dae to the defence ministry’s compound in central Seoul. With the launch of the Yoon government in May 2022, Kim was named as the chief of the Presidential Security Service.
Kim is considered to be well aware of Yoon’s security and foreign policies after being on the job close to Yoon for more than two years.
“Defence Minister nominee Kim was judged to be fit as defence minister as he best understands the commander in chief’s intentions as our government’s first chief of the Presidential Security Service,” Chung Jin-suk, presidential chief of staff, said in a briefing.
Kim is expected to be tasked with overseeing joint efforts between South Korea and the United States to bolster deterrence against evolving North Korean nuclear and missile threats.
The allies have recently pushed to integrate the South’s conventional forces with US nuclear capabilities to better respond to the North’s nuclear threats, signing a guidelines document on their joint nuclear deterrence posture last month.
The parliamentary confirmation hearing is widely seen as a formality because his formal appointment does not require endorsement from the National Assembly.
In South Korea, the Prime Minister is the only Cabinet post that requires parliamentary approval.
Sri Lanka launches initiative to conserve island’s unique biodiversity
Colombo, Aug 12 (IANS) Emphasising the island nation’s commitment to environmental conservation, Sri Lanka on Monday launched an ambitious initiative to conserve the country’s unique biodiversity while promoting sustainable economic prosperity.
Launched by Sagala Ratnayaka, the Chief of Staff to the Lankan President and Senior Advisor on National Security, the ’30×30 – Conservation and Prosperity for Nature and People’ programme showcases Sri Lanka’s commitment to supporting local communities and contributing to global conservation efforts.
Designed to attract over USD 1.5 billion in investments between 2025 and 2030, the launch event witnessed the participation of over 95 government entities, local and international non-governmental organisations, and corporates, all unified in their support for this ambitious initiative.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Ratnayaka highlighted Sri Lanka’s commitment to nature conservation, sustainable development and also dedication in ensuring a healthy planet for future generations through sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
He noted that Sri Lanka’s mangrove restoration programme has received international acclaim for its success with the government implementing several such projects aimed at protecting sensitive ecosystems.
“The implementation of these projects, overseen by Ratnayaka, remains a top national priority,” stated the Lankan President’s media division.
The initiative is coordinated by the Presidential Secretariat Climate Change Office with involvement of key government departments, including the Department of Wildlife Conservation, Forest Department, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, etc.
The programme aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted by Sri Lanka and 195 other countries in 2022 at the COP-15 biodiversity conference in Montreal. The GBF outlines 23 targets focusing on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, aimed at benefiting both nature and people.
The Lankan government has identified nine national priority conservation programmes, each designed to address critical environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices.
These include improving the protection and connectivity of wet zone ecosystems; halting forest loss in the dry zone by increasing protection; restoring degraded forest and mangrove habitats; sustainably develop and enhance protected area tourism to fund conservation; improving human-elephant coexistence; enhancing the health and productivity of river systems, starting with the Kelani River basin; enhancing conservation of marine ecosystems for the benefit of nature and people; strengthening sustainable fishery management practices and reverse the ensuring sustainable use of fish stocks and reversing the decline of key commercial species; and, protecting marine megafauna by reducing disturbances to whales caused by whale watchers and ships.
“Sri Lanka’s dedication to nature conservation and sustainable development is unwavering. We have embraced the 30×30 programme, a global initiative aimed at protecting 30% of the world’s lands and oceans by 2030. Some of these initiatives are already underway, with the mangrove development programme receiving international recognition as a very successful effort,” said Ratnayaka.
Ananda Mallawatantri, Advisor to the Lankan President on Environment, Climate Change and Green Finance, highlighted the financial and environmental benefits of the programme.
He labelled the project approach as “ambitious” but added that, with careful planning and a clear timeline, it could pave the way to reach the broader goal to integrate biodiversity conservation into green economy efforts, be it in agriculture, energy, waste or water management.
“By protecting critical ecosystems, ensuring the quality of ecosystem services and promoting the environment, we could support the Lankan exports and establish Sri Lanka as a green destination. For example, the EU Green Challenge require export projects to come from unpolluted river basins that require cleaning of the Kelani River where three key export zones are located,” mentioned Mallawatantri.
Ukrainian UAV caused fire in Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant area
Moscow, Aug 12 (IANS) Russia on Monday accused Ukraine of shelling the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) which resulted in fire in the area of one of the cooling towers.
“Tonight an attack by a Ukrainian UAV caused fire in the area of cooling systems of the Zaporozhskaya NPP. Russia will insist that IAEA names the perpetrator of this attack in the area of the ZNPP. Further silencing of this fact only condones Kyiv’s sense of impunity,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday while forwarding a statement from the country’s Permanent Mission in Vienna.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that its experts at ZNPP witnessed thick dark smoke coming from the north-western area of the plant, after hearing “multiple explosions” throughout the evening.
ZNPP has two cooling towers located at the northern side of the cooling pond, outside of the ZNPP perimetre.
According to the agency, cooling towers are used during power operation of the plant and their damage does not directly impact the safety of the six units in shutdown. However, any kind of fire on the site or in its vicinity represents a risk of spreading the fire also to facilities essential for safety.
“The team was informed that an alleged drone attack on one of the plant’s cooling towers took place today. There is no impact on nuclear safety,” confirmed IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
The agency said that, in order to ascertain the extent and possible cause of the event, the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhya (ISAMZ) is requesting immediate access to the cooling tower to assess the damage.
Grossi reiterated that any military action taken against the plant represents a clear violation of the five concrete principles for protecting the facility, which were established at the United Nations Security Council in May, last year.
“These reckless attacks endanger nuclear safety at the plant and increase the risk of a nuclear accident. They must stop now,” he said.
