Time to make India an innovation and technology hub in defence sector

Share

New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said the government will provide full support to the private sector to make India an innovation and technology hub in the defence sector.

Launching the ‘Dare to Dream 5.0’ initiative at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) event in the national capital to encourage the next generation of innovators and startups to come forward with transformative ideas for defence applications, the minister said technology has transformed conventional warfare into unconventional warfare.

“New dimensions have been added to modern-day warfare such as drones, cyber warfare, bio-weapons and space defence. In this transformative phase, R&D in defence will definitely make the defence sector stronger,” the minister told scientists, industry leaders, academia, startups, MSMEs, and young entrepreneurs at the event.

Rajnath Singh further stated that it is time for the private sector to take the lead as it has the ability to absorb rapid changes and create new innovations, adding that the government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will continue providing all necessary support to the youth, scientists, industrialists and MSMEs in this endeavour.

“The Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme is providing up to 90 per cent of the total project cost as grant support to eligible industries. The total support is up to Rs 50 crore, a good amount for any MSME and start-up to invest in defence R&D,” the Union Minister said.

Since its launch six years ago, 79 projects have been sanctioned, of which, technology has successfully been developed in 18 projects.

The minister also felicitated the winners of ‘Dare to Dream 4.0’, recognising individual innovators, start-ups and MSMEs for creating disruptive solutions and innovations. “Like our brave soldiers, scientists, industry leaders, academia, start-ups, MSMEs and entrepreneurs too are the warriors of the country, prepared to complete every assigned task,” said the Defence Minister.

  • PM Modi gave thrust to Biotechnology by unveiling Bio-E3 policy

    Share

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 17 (IANS) Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Thursday said after Narendra Modi took over as the Prime Minister, a big thrust has been given to sectors like Biotechnology by unveiling the Bio-E3 policy.

“As India has come to play a big global role, it is now time to creatively think how to add value to the outcome of these policies and roll them out and provide a handholding to the otherwise left-out sections as well,” said Singh while inaugurating the community enterprises of Scheduled Castes-Scheduled Tribes communities of Kerala promoted jointly by the Tribal Science Heritage project of Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council-Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB) and Swadeshi Science Movement-Kerala (SSM-K) at BRIC-RGCB campus.

He added that it is time to scale up efforts to add value to the fruits of scientific research of leading institutions and roll them out for the inclusive progress of society.

The event was attended by 200 beneficiaries of the BRIC-RGCB’s Tribal Heritage Project and Agro-based Science Technology & Innovation Hub of Swadeshi Science Movement-Kerala and Vijnana Bharat.

Referring to the presence of leading science and technology institutions in the city, Singh said Kerala capital has become the Science Capital of the country, just as it is known as the tourism capital.

“Thiruvananthapuram can also be called the science capital of India as it has become a favourite destination for scientists. It has immense scientific and research potential, because of the resources and also because of the legacy of science research and innovation which has been there for generations,” Singh said.

He added that there were just 50 startups in 2014, now it is almost 9000.

“The country’s bioeconomy was just 10 billion USD, today it’s about 130 billion USD,” he said.

He said that during the outbreak of Covid-19, Indian scientific institutions had demonstrated their strength before the world as a faculty from RGCB was part of the global presentation of the vaccine-a product of biotechnology department.

“The concept of ST hubs aligned with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of rolling out exclusive initiatives and schemes for the inclusion of the marginalised sections in the progress of the country. This initiative of Kerala has placed a pilot project for the entire country as a sustainable and innovative model of self-employment and self-livelihood,” Singh said.

Akiran Nandan’s Potential Debut in OG

    Share

Rumors have been circulating about the potential debut of Akiran Nandan, the son of popular Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan, in the highly anticipated film OG. While his mother, Renu Desai, had previously ruled out an acting career for Akira, citing his interest in music and direction, recent reports suggest that plans are underway to introduce him in a cameo role in the film. Director Sujeeth is said to have proposed the idea, and Akira’s appearance is expected to be a crucial part of the story.

Although some speculate that Akira might play a younger version of Pawan Kalyan, others suggest he could take on a separate, significant character. The inclusion of Akira in OG would not only offer him an opportunity to showcase his talent but also help build familiarity with the audience. With Pawan Kalyan’s growing political commitments, bringing Akira into the limelight could be a strategic move. Given his father’s massive fan base, Akira would have a ready-made audience eager to see him on the big screen.

While these are just rumors at this stage, the possibility of Akira Nandan making his debut in OG has excited fans and fueled speculation. Only time will tell if these speculations will materialize into reality.

Amman, Oct 19 (IANS) King Abdullah II of Jordan discussed with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ways to de-escalate the situation in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

In a meeting in Jordan’s port city of Aqaba on Friday, they stressed the need to intensify efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire, protect civilians, and end people’s suffering, reports Xinhua, quoting Jordan’s state-run Petra news agency.

Jerusalem, Oct 19 (IANS) A drone, launched from Lebanon on Saturday, was targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence in the northern coastal town of Caesarea, the P:rime Minister’s office said.

The office said Netanyahu and his wife were not at home at the time and the drone attack caused no casualties.

According to a statement issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the drone hit a house in Caesarea. Israeli media, citing sources, reported that the house was not the Prime Minister’s residence.

The IDF also said two other drones launched at the time into Israel were successfully intercepted, Xinhua news agency reported.

Following the launch, air defence sirens were heard at Glilot Base in central Israel, where Unit 8200, an elite cyber intelligence unit, is located.

US-British coalition launches airstrikes on Yemen’s Hodeidah

    Share

Sanaa, Oct 19 (IANS) Warplanes of the US-UK coalition launched two airstrikes on Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, the Houthi-run media reported.

The strikes targeted an area in the district of Ras Issa, northwest of the city, said the al-Masirah TV, without providing further details. Residents of Hodeidah told Xinhua that they heard loud explosions an hour before midnight.

The US-UK coalition has not commented on the incidents, and there have been no reports about casualties yet, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting al-Masirah TV.

On Thursday, the US Central Command said its forces launched airstrikes on Houthi-controlled underground weapons storage in the capital Sanaa and the northern city of Saada. The Houthi group vowed retaliation after the attacks.

The Houthis have been controlling Hodeidah and several other northern cities since late 2014 after the civil war broke out in Yemen, forcing the internationally recognised Yemeni government out of the capital Sanaa.

Since November last year, the Houthi group has been launching rocket and drone attacks targeting what it described as “Israeli-linked” ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to show solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

In response, the US-UK navy coalition stationed in the waters has been conducting sporadic air raids and strikes against Houthi targets to deter the group.
