DRDO scientists develop PBAT-based biodegradable packaging

Hyderabad, Aug 6 (IANS) A team of scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed PBAT-based biodegradable packaging, revolutionising the market with eco-friendly alternatives that decompose within three months, leaving no harmful residue.
Dr. K Veerabrahmam, Scientist, DRDO and his team at Advanced Systems Laboratory of DRDO at Hyderabad developed biodegradable packaging products using PBAT, a biodegradable polymer derived from petroleum products or plant oils.
This innovative technology has been shared with over 40 industries free of cost, aiming for widespread adoption across the country and the world, the team said on Tuesday.
PBAT-based biodegradable packaging is set to transform the market with its remarkable strength and durability, comparable to conventional plastics. These products offer an eco-friendly alternative without compromising on quality.
Extensive environmental impact studies, including the IS 17088 test, have confirmed that these biodegradable bags decompose within three months, leaving no harmful residue and ensuring they are compostable, it said.
“Despite the slightly higher production cost of Rs 160 to 180 per kg compared to traditional polyethene bags at Rs. 140 per kg, DRDO and its partners are committed to keeping these biodegradable bags cost-effective. By sharing the technology free of charge and fostering collaborations, we aim to scale up production and distribution efficiently. This approach ensures that the benefits of this eco-friendly solution reach a broad audience,” said Dr. K Veerabrahmam, Scientist, DRDO.
He mentioned that the success of this initiative is already evident at the Tirumala temple, where biodegradable bags are now used for distributing Tirupati Laddus.
This pilot project serves as a model for further implementation in tourist destinations, coastal areas, and other regions, promoting the widespread adoption of biodegradable packaging solutions.
The potential applications of this technology extend beyond carry bags. Biodegradable materials can be utilised for medical waste bags, aprons, garbage bags, nursery bags, shrink films, and packing films, showcasing their versatility and broad utility. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable living and environmental preservation, the team said.
“The patent of this technology is in progress. The extensive research conducted by the Advanced Systems Laboratory of DRDO in Hyderabad underscores their commitment to finding the best environment-friendly replacements for hazardous plastic. The collaboration with Ecolastic Private Limited and the involvement of multiple industries exemplify the collective effort required to combat the plastic pollution crisis,” it added.
Mexican President ascribes global market jitters to dismal US unemployment

Mexico City, Aug 6 (IANS) Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador blamed the drop in global markets on investor nervousness caused by the release of dismal employment figures in the United States.
“At the end of last week, like on Thursday, a situation of instability began, fundamentally attributed to data provided about the growth of unemployment in the United States,” Lopez Obrador told a regular daily press conference, Xinhua news agency reported.
“And this made the financial markets nervous and affected exchange rates worldwide,” he said.
While the impact on the Mexican peso was not “very significant,” the peso did slide somewhat to trade at 19.55 to the dollar, said the president.
However, he added, Mexico has “a margin of protection,” since the local economy has strong public finances and record levels of international reserves.
Amid Mideast tensions, South Korea issues travel ban alert for border regions of Israel, Lebanon

Seoul, Aug 6 (IANS) South Korea is banning travel to the border regions of Israel and Lebanon, and raising a travel advisory for part of Iran as the tensions of conflict have sharply escalated in the Middle East, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
The Level 4 travel ban, the highest of the four-scale travel warning system, will be applied to the northern border region of Israel and Lebanon’s southern border area, about 4 kilometers and 5 km from the Blue Line, respectively, the ministry said. The changes will be effective from Wednesday, Yonhap news agency reported.
The Blue Line is a temporary demarcation line dividing Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It was drawn by the United Nations in 2000 to determine Israel’s line of withdrawal from Lebanon.
Most of Israel and Lebanon had been under the Level 3 travel alert, which calls for people to leave the countries. The Gaza Strip and its border regions had already been issued the Level 4 travel warning.
A “special travel advisory,” calling for people to cancel or postpone trips, will be issued for the rest of Iran.
South Korea maintains the Level 3 alert, recommending departure from the country, for the Iranian regions bordering Turkey and Iraq, and three coastal provinces — Khuzestan, Bushehr and Hormozgan — in the Persian Gulf.

NTR Fans Don’t Know How To Feel With ‘Chuttamalle’ Song!

The much-awaited second single from ‘Devara’ is out now. Named ‘Chuttamalle’, it is a beautiful melody. It is getting millions of views already and Hindi & Tamil versions are received quite well too. NTR’s uber-cool avatar, graceful dance movies, Janhvi’s exquisite glamour, beautiful locations, lyrics and vocals were pretty good.
With so many positives, NTR fans should be celebrating happily. But they are not entirely happy as the tune of this track shares a striking resemblance to ‘Manika’ song sung by Sri Lankan artist Yohani. It became so popular that Bollywood makers brought her to India and made a new version of it for ‘Thank God’. Nora Fatehi and Siddharth Malhotra featured in it.
‘Chuttamalle’ and ‘Manike’ sound similar according to many. Though Anirudh’s composition is sure to become a big hit, people are complaining that he is copying tunes. The ‘Fear Song’ too faced similar accusations as the beats sounded similar to his own ‘Badass’ from ‘Leo’. Anirudh is one of the most wanted music composers in the country and his work is known to many.
People are expecting a lot from him. While he is delivering hits for ‘Devara’, NTR fans are left with a mixed feeling as they cannot deny the similarities with other tunes. Also, there are fans of other composers saying that the social media is awfully quiet when Anirudh copies while they usually bash Thaman to extreme lengths for doing the same. What is your opinion on it?
