AIIMS Bilaspur made remarkable growth, to soon set up viral research lab

Share

New Delhi, Oct 4 (IANS) AIIMS Bilaspur has made remarkable growth, and will soon set up a regional viral research and diagnostics laboratory, said Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Friday.

The Union Health Minister on Friday visited the state-of-the-art Renal Transplant ICU and Facility at AIIMS Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh.

Launched in 2017, AIIMS Bilaspur has achieved significant milestones, including the successful start of telemedicine services in May 2021, which has since helped over 20,000 patients across Himachal Pradesh.

The hospital is equipped with 250-bed in-patient services, emergency and trauma care services, and advanced diagnostics like MRI and CT scans.

“Healthcare facilities like the Cardiac Cath Lab and Radiotherapy services, which were opened earlier this year, have strengthened the institute’s ability to provide specialised services for the benefit of the masses,” Nadda said.

Nadda also announced approval for setting up a Regional VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory) in AIIMS Bilaspur at a cost of more than Rs 18 crore.

The Minister lauded the commencement of renal transplant services at AIIMS Bilaspur and interacted with the first renal transplant recipient who had recently undergone transplant surgery.

Nadda noted that the “institute will fill a long-standing void in the availability of transplant services in Himachal Pradesh”.

The Union Health Minister noted that the renal transplant facility is also available under PMJAY and HimCare health insurance schemes. The facility will act as a catalyst for the establishment of multiorgan and bone marrow transplantation services in the near future.

It is expected to assist 50-100 patients each year, in addition to raising awareness about organ donation.

Further, AIIMS Bilaspur is also providing medical education and research.

It has “614 students studying in various undergraduate, Post Graduate and super-specialty medical courses, B.Sc. (Hons)(Nursing) and B.Sc. (Allied Health Sciences) courses”.

In 2025, the facility is also expected to launch PhD programmes.

The Union Minister also announced approval for various infrastructure projects such as construction of a 250-bedded night shelter (Vishram Sadan) at the cost of Rs 25.6 crore; 72 dwelling units, 204 bedded UG boys hostel, 334 bedded UG girls hostel, four lecture halls for the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences and a 538KWH solar rooftop power plant worth Rs 178 crore.

10 species identified as at serious risk of extinction in Australia

Share

Sydney, Oct 5 (IANS) Australia is one of the world leaders in mammal extinctions and 10 species have been identified as among the most imperilled, the country’s national environmental organisation said on Saturday.

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has consulted a range of ecologists and biologists and identified 10 species as at serious risk of extinction, the organisation said in a media release.

They are Tasmania’s Maugean skate, the swift parrot, the regent honeyeater, a small wallaby called the Top End nabarlek, the Baw Baw frog, Victoria’s grassland earless dragon, the central rock-rat, the Kangaroo Island assassin spider and two plants, the Tunbridge leek-orchid and the Coffs Harbour Fontainea, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Without the full reform of Australia’s unfit-for-purpose nature law and no sign of an independent agency to enforce the law, these 10 highly imperilled plants and animals are staring down the barrel of extinction,” ACF nature campaigner Darcie Carruthers was quoted as saying.

“Some are threatened by particular industries. For example, Tasmania’s Maugean skate is under direct threat from intensive salmon farming in its home of Macquarie Harbour,” Carruthers said. “The survival of the swift parrot is dependent on the species having suitable nesting and food trees, but commercial logging is destroying its essential breeding trees.”

“In virtually every case, destruction of the species’ habitat is the defining problem,” she said.

As of September 2024, there are a total of 2,245 species on the national list of flora, fauna and ecological communities that are threatened with extinction, according to the ACF’s Extinction Roulette report.

Mongolia observes National Autumn Tree Planting Days

Share

Ulan Bator, Oct 5 (IANS) Mongolians nationwide on Saturday kicked off the National Autumn Tree Planting Days, the country’s largest event dedicated to planting trees and environmental conservation.

As part of the National Autumn Tree Planting Days, Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh planted trees in the Green Wall Park located in the Songinokhairkhan district of Ulan Bator, the capital of the country, according to the presidential office.

In 2021, Mongolia launched a nationwide tree-planting campaign called ‘Billion Trees’. Khurelsukh told the United Nations General Assembly that the campaign aims to plant at least one billion trees by 2030 to combat desertification, Xinhua news agency reported.

The President noted on Saturday that since the inception of the national movement, the country’s forestry sector has experienced a revival, leading to a significant increase in tree-planting activities across Mongolia.

The autumn tree planting days are expected to last until October 26.

Mongolia has a total land area of over 1.5 million square km and only around 8 per cent has been covered by forests so far.

Almost 77 per cent of the country’s territory has been struck by desertification and land degradation, according to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Since 2010, the Asian country has marked National Tree Planting Days twice a year, in May and October, to raise awareness about the importance of trees, improve air quality, and combat climate change.

UN allocates additional fund to address deteriorating situation in Lebanon

Share

United Nations, Oct 5 (IANS) Given the worsening humanitarian needs in Lebanon, UN humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza announced an additional $2 million from the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund to address the deteriorating situation in the country, a UN spokesman said.

The new fund, which comes alongside a previous $10 million Central Emergency Response Fund allocated very recently, would bring the total allocation to $12 million so far, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, at a daily briefing.

Dujarric said that on the health front, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday that the first flight with WHO medical supplies, enough to treat tens of thousands of injured people, has arrived in Beirut, Lebanon. More flights are planned for Friday and in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs remains concerned about the safety and well-being of civilians as Lebanon experiences a surge in airstrikes and displacement orders. There were new orders given by the Israelis in the south, for areas above the Litani River and areas such as El-Buss, which hosts a Palestinian refugee camp, that forced families to flee from areas previously considered safer, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Civilians on both sides of the Blue Line in Lebanon and Israel, must be allowed to live in peace and tranquillity,” said the spokesperson.

Beirut residential areas were once again subjected to intense overnight Israeli airstrikes, apparently injuring rescue workers. And strikes continued unabated in other parts of Lebanon. “The toll on civilians from this campaign is unacceptable,” said Dujarric.

“The Secretary-General is very concerned about the increasing toll on civilians that we are seeing across the immediate region,” he said, urging all parties to do whatever they can to protect civilians and infrastructure and ensure that civilians are never harmed.

He said the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reports that within their area of operations, they still observe intense airstrikes and heavy clashes. Significant exchanges of fire are occurring in Sector West, particularly Marun ar Ras, Yaroun and Bint Jbeil and in Sector East, focusing on the Khiam, Kafer Kila and El Adeisse areas.

“UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to remain in position despite the dangerous environment, while the intensity of fighting hampers their movement and ability to undertake the full range of their mandated tasks,” said Dujarric.

The safety and security of UN peacekeepers “is a paramount priority and it is a shared responsibility for all parties,” he said, adding that UNIFIL reiterates its call both for an immediate de-escalation and for the parties to immediately return to a cessation of hostilities and the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701.
