Children at high type 1 diabetes risk if fathers have the condition
New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) A team of scientists has revealed that a child is almost twice as likely to develop type 1 diabetes if the father has the condition than the mother.
The study, the largest of its kind and published in the journal Diabetologia, suggests that exposure to type 1 diabetes in the womb confers long-term protection against the condition in children with affected mothers relative to those with affected fathers.
Understanding what is responsible for this relative protection could lead to opportunities to develop new treatments to prevent type 1 diabetes, said researchers.
“Individuals with a family history of type 1 diabetes are 8-15 times more likely to develop the autoimmune condition – however, studies have shown the risk is higher if the affected relative is the father rather than the mother. We wanted to understand this more,” said lead researcher Dr Lowri Allen from Cardiff University in the UK.
Previous studies have suggested that maternal type 1 diabetes is associated with relative protection against type 1 diabetes in offspring during early life.
The new study involved 11,475 individuals who were diagnosed when they were between 0 and 88 years old.
The results show they were almost twice as likely (1.8 times more likely) to have a father with type 1 diabetes as a mother with the condition.
“Taken together, our findings suggest the relative protection associated with having a mother versus father with type 1 diabetes is a long-term effect that extends into adult life,” said Allen.
However, the timing of the parent’s diagnosis was important.
An individual was only more likely to have a father, rather than a mother, with type 1 diabetes, if the parent was diagnosed before the individual was born.
In other words, having a mother with type 1 diabetes only appears to provide a child with protection against the condition (relative to having a father with type 1 diabetes) if the mother has the condition during pregnancy, the findings showed.
Further research is needed to determine what it is about exposure to type 1 diabetes in the womb that is most important.
“Is it exposure to high blood glucose levels, insulin treatment, antibodies associated with type 1 diabetes, a combination of these, or exposure to another aspect of type 1 diabetes?” asked researchers.
Pakistani woman travels from Islamabad to Rajasthan in yet another cross-border love story
Islamabad, July 29 (IANS) In yet another cross-border love story, a 25-year-old Pakistani woman crossed the international border last week to join a man from Rajasthan, whom she had befriended on a social media platform and later got married to.
It was after the failure of her first marriage in 2018 that Mehvish, who resides in Islamabad, befriended Rehman who hailed from Rajasthan’s Bikaner district and was working as a transporter in Kuwait.
After several interactions on social media, the two fell in love with each other, leading to a marriage proposal on March 13, 2022 and “marriage via videoconference” three days later.
Later, both had a formal, in-person marriage ceremony during Mehvish’s Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca in 2023.
Mehvish was previously married for 12 years to a Pakistani man from Lahore’s Badami Bagh and had two sons, aged 12 and 7, from the long relationship. In 2018, both decided to part ways.
It was after her divorce that she befriended Rehman and later got married, first via video conference and then in-person during a visit to Saudi Arabia.
Sources say that Mehvish travelled from Islamabad to Lahore and crossed over into India through the Wagah border on July 25. She has obtained a 45-day tourist visa after a thorough document checking done by both Pakistani and the Indian authorities.
Mehvish was received by Rehman’s family and travelled to Pithisar village in Rajasthan’s Churu along with them.
The latest cross-border love story adds on to a list of such episodes where men and women from India and Pakistan have made long and eventful journeys to be with their lovers.
The most famous recent case was of Seema Haider who had left her husband and crossed the border into India to meet and marry her lover.
The case of an Indian woman named Anju, who came to Pakistan on a month-long visa to be with her lover Nasrullah, also grabbed the spotlight.
Another case was of Mulayam Singh Yadav, the 21-year-old Indian citizen, who had helped his 19-year-old Pakistani wife Iqra Jeewani to get a fake ID and enter India illegally. Both had befriended and fell in love while playing online Ludo. However, after being arrested by the Indian authorities, Iqra was deported to Pakistan while Mulayam was put behind bars and was charged with fraud.
Typhoon Gaemi causes flooding, damage in parts of China
Shenyang, July 29 (IANS) Typhoon Gaemi, the third typhoon this year, caused flooding and damage in parts of China including eastern Fujian Province and northeastern Liaoning Province.
The typhoon has affected 766,900 residents in Fujian Province, resulting in direct economic losses exceeding 1.6 billion yuan (about $ 224.35 million), reported Xinhua news agency.
The situation will be further assessed, said the provincial flood prevention and control office on Monday, adding that currently no reports of casualties have been received.
By Sunday morning, Fujian had evacuated 312,700 people from hazardous areas and dispatched 2,763 rescue teams involving 69,400 people and 15,600 pieces of equipment, to carry out emergency rescue work.
The typhoon has caused heavy rainfall in many parts of Fujian, with 17 rivers experiencing flooding from Thursday to Sunday.
All power grid failures caused by the typhoon have been resolved, and the telecommunication network remains stable.
Typhoon Gaemi has also brought heavy rainfall to Liaoning, causing water levels to rise in 17 rivers and over 60 reservoirs across the province.
As of 7 a.m. on Monday, nearly 60,000 residents had been relocated to safety, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.
On Monday morning, the headquarters issued an orange alert for Dandong, a border city located on the northwest bank of the Yalu River, and elevated the flood emergency response level to Level II.
More than 10,000 residents in Dandong have been safely relocated.
Currently, 31 metal smelting enterprises and 262 mining enterprises across the province have suspended operations to mitigate flood risks, with nearly 6,000 employees evacuated.
The provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters also issued a flood warning at 8 a.m. on Monday, forecasting a risk of floods in the hilly areas due to the rainfall. The public was advised to reduce outdoor activities.
Will launch ‘painful’ but limited’ strike against Hezbollah to avoid regional war: Israel
Jerusalem, July 29 (IANS) Israel has decided to launch “a painful strike” against Hezbollah, but in a limited scope that will not “trigger a full-fledged regional war,” an Israeli government official confirmed to Xinhua on Monday.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Israel was preparing to launch “a limited” retaliation after a rocket attack on Saturday killed 12 children and youth in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, Xinhua news agency reported.
Israel accuses Hezbollah of firing the rocket while the Lebanese group and political party have denied any involvement.
The source said that the response could trigger “several days” of intensive fighting and that Israel was preparing for such a scenario.
According to a statement issued on Sunday night following a meeting of Israel’s security cabinet, the ministers had granted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant the authority “to decide on the manner of the response against Hezbollah, and its timing.”
The statement did not specify how Israel would respond to the attack.
