INST researchers develop paper-based device to simplify sensing of contaminants

Share

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) Researchers at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, an institute of Department of Science and Technology, have developed a novel and cost-effective technique for fabricating paper-based devices.

The devices developed using an Advanced PAP (A-PAP) pen offer a practical alternative to conventional sensing methods that necessitate specialised equipment and expertise making it suitable for resource-limited settings, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Paper-based devices have in recent years shown promise for point-of-care diagnostics with factors such as simplicity, cost-effectiveness, disposability, and mobility.

There are various methods for fabricating paper-based devices such as inkjet printing, wax printing, laser treatment, and correction pens.

However, these processes typically require complex instruments, and machinery or may require heating/drying steps which limits their accessibility in resource-limited settings.

The new fabrication technique using a PAP pen does not require any machinery or heating/drying steps and adopts a DIY approach, the ministry said.

The team used the A-PAP pen to fabricate two-dimensional (2D) paper-based devices for the chemical detection of heavy metal and nitrite. It does not require any sophisticated instrumentation or a heating step.

They also demonstrated the versatility of fabrication techniques for biological sensing using 2D lateral flow paper-based devices for the detection of dopamine.

Further, the technique also validated fabricating complex three-dimensional (3D) paper-based devices using a paper origami technique for heavy metals sensing.

“The ready-to-use devices can be fabricated in seconds, making them convenient for on-the-spot testing. Overall, this technique provides a valuable tool for creating affordable, efficient, and accessible chemical and biological testing solutions,” the ministry said.

The paper-based devices fabricated are distinguished by rapid, simple, and cost-effective fabrication and the DIY approach offers a low-cost solution particularly beneficial for developing countries and remote areas.

It enables rapid fabrication in around 10 seconds with a superior contact angle suitable for testing and sensing applications. It also represents a cost-effective and user-friendly technique for identifying and quantifying contaminants in diverse matrices such as water and food.

Cabinet approves ‘Bio-RIDE’ scheme to support research and development in biotechnology

Share

New Delhi, Sep 18 (IANS) To support cutting-edge research and development in the field of biotechnology, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the continuation of the two umbrella schemes of Department of Biotechnology (DBT) as one unified scheme.

Called ‘Biotechnology Research Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development (Bio-RIDE), the proposed outlay for the implementation of the unified scheme is Rs 9,197 crore during the 15th finance Commission period from 2021-22 to 2025-26.

The scheme has three broad components: biotechnology research and development (R&D), industrial and entrepreneurship development (I&ED) and biomanufacturing and biofoundry.

It will nurture a thriving ecosystem for startups by providing seed funding, incubation support, and mentorship to bio-entrepreneurs.

The scheme will offer grants and incentives for cutting-edge research and development in areas like synthetic biology, biopharmaceuticals, bioenergy, and bioplastics.

“Bio-RIDE will create synergies between academic institutions, research organisations, and industry to accelerate the commercialization of bio-based products and technologies,” said the ministry.

The scheme is designed to foster innovation, promote bio-entrepreneurship, and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in biomanufacturing and biotechnology.

A significant focus will be placed on promoting environmentally sustainable practices in biomanufacturing, aligned with India’s green goals, the ministry noted.

To enable circular-bioeconomy in the country, a component on biomanufacturing and biofoundry is being initiated in alignment with ‘Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE)’ launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to propel mitigation of global climate change by incorporating green and friendly environmental solutions in every aspect of life.

According to the ministry, the new component aspires to nurture the immense potential of ‘biomanufacturing’ to facilitate development of indigenous innovative solutions to improve healthcare outcomes, enhance agriculture productivity, foster growth of the bioeconomy and scale-up and commercialisation of bio-based products.

Biomanufacturing and bio-foundry are part of the new BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) policy that will drive India’s green growth.

The country’s bioeconomy rose from $10 billion in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024. It is projected to reach $300 billion by 2030.

Western Australia recorded the fastest-growing population, up 3.1 per cent in the 12 months to March, while the island state of Tasmania had the lowest growth at 0.4 per cent.

Australians advised to leave Lebanon immediately after deadly device explosions

Share

Canberra, Sep 19 (IANS) The Australian government has reiterated its warning to citizens not to travel to Lebanon following the explosion of communications devices used by Hezbollah.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong on Thursday said that the government is gravely concerned about the consequences of a possible escalation of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“It’s another reminder I think to Australians, do not travel to Lebanon,” Chalmers told reporters.

His warning comes after at least 26 people were killed and thousands more injured when pagers and handheld radios used by Hezbollah exploded in Lebanon on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Xinhua news agency.

Speaking on Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio, Wong called for all Australians in Lebanon to leave the country while they still can.

“The consequences of regional escalation are obviously substantial,” she said.

The government’s Smartraveller service updated its travel advice for Lebanon on Wednesday, encouraging Australians in the country to leave immediately while commercial flights remain available.

It warned that the security situation in the country could deteriorate with little or no notice and that Beirut airport could close.

“The Australian Government may not be able to assist you to leave in such circumstances,” it said.

Australia has had a “do not travel” advisory in place for Lebanon since October 2023.

A Tweet Amidst Controversy: Nagababu and Jani Master

Share

In the midst of the ongoing controversies within the Tollywood film industry, a tweet by actor Nagababu has ignited discussions and speculations. Quoting Sir William Garrow, Nagababu stated, “No person can be considered guilty of a crime until he or she has been found guilty of that crime by a court of law.” While the sentiment expressed in the tweet is undeniably true, its timing and context have led to numerous interpretations and debates.

The tweet has been linked to the recent allegations against choreographer Jani Master. The choreographer has been accused of sexual harassment by a junior choreographer, leading to significant backlash and scrutiny within the industry. The allegations include multiple instances of sexual

assault that reportedly began when the victim was a minor. Following these claims, Jani Master was suspended from his association with the Jana Sena Party.

Given the timing of Nagababu’s tweet and the gravity of the allegations against Jani Master, many moviegoers and critics have assumed that the tweet is a subtle endorsement of the choreographer’s innocence. However, Nagababu has not explicitly confirmed or denied this interpretation. The tweet could simply be a general statement about the principle of innocence until proven guilty, without any specific reference to Jani Master’s case.

The ongoing investigation into Jani Master’s alleged misconduct is still unfolding, and public opinion remains divided. As more details emerge, the situation is likely to become even more complex. Nagababu’s tweet serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding issues of guilt and innocence in high-profile cases. It also highlights the challenges faced by the Tollywood industry in addressing allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct.

Panic Rises in Ohio as Mass Deportation Fears Grow!

Share

Panic is escalating in Springfield, Ohio, as residents grapple with the fallout from recent hate flyers and inflammatory rhetoric surrounding the Haitian community. These flyers, distributed by the Ku Klux Klan, called for the deportation of foreigners and specifically targeted Haitians, igniting fear and confusion among local residents. The situation worsened when false rumors circulated, claiming that Haitians were responsible for stealing and eating local pets, further fueling animosity and mistrust within the community.

The incendiary language used in the flyers included bold statements such as “Foreigners & Haitians out,” promoting a narrative of intolerance. This rhetoric has not only disrupted daily life but has also led to serious repercussions. Schools were evacuated due to bomb threats linked to the spread of these rumors, and city officials have expressed concerns about the safety of their communities. The mayor of Springfield and other local leaders have condemned these hate-filled messages, emphasizing that they are baseless and harmful.

Former President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the situation, vowing to conduct mass deportations of immigrants in Springfield during his campaign events. His comments have echoed the sentiments expressed in the hate flyers, further polarizing the community. Trump’s claims about a surge in Haitian immigrants and their alleged negative impact on local life have been debunked by officials, who assert that most Haitians in Springfield are legally residing under Temporary Protected Status. Despite this, Trump’s rhetoric has amplified fears and led to increased tensions within the city.

In response to these challenges, many residents have come together to support their Haitian neighbors, participating in prayer vigils and community gatherings aimed at fostering unity. Local activists are reminding everyone that love and truth must prevail over hatred and division. As Springfield navigates this crisis, the community’s ability to stand together against intolerance will be crucial in shaping its future and restoring a sense of safety for all its residents.
