Centre signs Rs 26,000 cr contract with HAL for 240 aero engines

Share

New Delhi, Sep 9 (IANS) In a boost for local defence manufacturing, the Centre on Monday signed a Rs 26,000 crore contract with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 240 aero engines (AL-31FP) for Su-30 MKI aircraft.

According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), these aero engines will be manufactured by the Koraput Division of HAL, and are expected to fulfil the need of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to sustain the operational capability of the Su-30 fleet for the defence preparedness of the country.

HAL would supply 30 aero-engines per annum as per the contractual delivery schedule. The supply of all 240 engines would be completed over the period of the next eight years, according to the ministry.

HAL plans to take support from the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, involving MSMEs and public and private industries for manufacturing these aero engines.

By the end of the delivery programme, HAL would enhance the indigenisation content up to 63 per cent to achieve an average of over 54 per cent.

This would also help increase the indigenous content of repair and overhaul tasks of the aero-engines, the ministry noted.

Earlier this month, the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a proposal for the procurement of 240 aero engines.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the delivery of these aero-engines would start after one year and be completed over a period of eight years.

The Su-30 MKI is one of the most powerful and strategically-significant components of the IAF’s fleet and the supply of these aero-engines by HAL would meet the fleet sustenance requirement to continue their unhindered operations and strengthen the defence preparedness of the country.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh earlier informed that the ‘GE-414’ engines for the fighter jets will now be made in India.

Students had to go to Odisha, Andhra earlier: CM Reddy on inauguration of IIHT

Share

Hyderabad, Sep 9 (IANS) Telangana Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy on Monday inaugurated Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Hyderabad.

Speaking on the occasion, he slammed the previous government of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for failing to establish the institute in the last 10 years.

He said Telangana students had to go to Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to pursue studies in the IIHT there.

CM Reddy said his government appealed to the Union government to take measures to establish the IIHT in Telangana.

“I had appealed to the Prime Minister to set up the institution in the state. The Centre responded positively to the Telangana government’s request and approved the establishment of the institute,” he said.

The IIHT has come up in Telugu Academy at Nampally. He had asked officials to commence the courses from the current academic year.

CM Reddy said Skill University had already been set up to impart skill training to students in the state and all necessary steps would be taken to set up the IIHT campus in the Skill University next year.

CM Reddy said that the government had provided relief to distressed weavers by releasing dues of Rs 290 crore. He said the previous government created hype on the promotion of handlooms by launching a campaign with movie stars but the poor living conditions of the weavers remained unchanged.

He alleged that the previous government also delayed the release of dues for the weavers towards payment of Batukamma sarees.

CM Reddy said the Congress government released the funds and supported the struggling Sircilla workers without any politics.

Stating that there were 63 lakh Self-Help Group members in the state, he said the government decided to distribute two sarees to each group member every year.

Instructions have already been given to the authorities to come out with a good design and quality of sarees, CM Reddy said.

The Telangana CM said his government decided to give the order of 1.30 crore sarees to the weavers every year.

Officials have also been instructed to prepare an action plan for the conduct of elections to Co-operative Unions.

CM Reddy said the government will also waive Rs 30 crore handloom loans taken by the weavers. “My government is giving equal priority to farmers and weavers. I will support the entire weaving community like an elder brother,” he said.

Taking a dig at his political rivals, CM Reddy remarked that election, selection and collection were not considered as sacrifices.

Paying tributes to Telangana movement leader Konda Laxman Bapuji, CM Reddy said he sacrificed posts to the cause of Telangana and stood as a role model.

He announced that the newly-established IIHT would be named after Konda Laxman Bapuji and officials have been asked to issue an order in this regard.

Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, AIMIM MLA from Nampally Majid Hussain, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari, and others attended the event.

Majority of households in Australia’s Queensland living below basic standards

Share

Sydney, Sep 9 (IANS) Over half of households in the Australian state of Queensland are struggling to afford food, bills and petrol, a report found on Monday.

The Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS), the peak body for the state’s social service sector, published its 2024 Living Affordability Report, revealing that 60 per cent of households are living below basic standards, Xinhua news agency reported.

It found that Queensland parents are increasingly skipping meals to ensure their children are fed, can not afford medication and are replacing nutritious food with cheaper, less healthy options.

“Households are neglecting their health needs due to out-of-pocket costs or are enduring extreme financial hardship to cover essential medical expenses,” the report said. “Concerningly people are experiencing higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression due to financial stress.”

Queensland is Australia’s third-largest state with a population of 5.5 million as of the end of 2023, representing 20.4 per cent of the national population.

The report said that parents are unable to afford school camps and extracurricular activities for their children.

QCOSS modelling shows that an average single working parent in Queensland has a weekly budget deficit of 156.93 Australian dollars ($104.7). For an average couple with two children, it estimated a weekly budget deficit of 116.06 Australian dollars ($77.5).

Both are improvements from 2023 deficits, but the report said they would grow worse when short-term government measures aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures expire.

The report identified housing as the biggest expenditure for all types of households, with all those modelled in the report spending more than 37 per cent of their income on mortgage repayments or rent.

Sanae Takaichi first female candidate to join LDP presidency race in Japan

Share

Tokyo, Sep 9 (IANS) Japan’s Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, a firm supporter of late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s vision of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ (FOIP), relaunched her bid to become the country’s first female PM on Monday by announcing her candidacy for the post of President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

63-year-old Takaichi lost in the very first round during the LDP’s 2021 election when current Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was elected.

Her decision to join the leadership race has given an interesting turn to the September 27 election which will witness a record number of candidates – seven, so far – including Takaichi’s colleagues Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi and Digital Minister Taro Kono.

“I will pursue economic growth first and foremost and as much as possible,” Japan’s leading news agency Kyodo News quoted Takaichi as saying during a press conference on Monday where she also noted the need for “strategic” fiscal spending for the economy.

Takaichi also stressed that Japan must ensure its ally, the United States, remains “engaged” in the region.

“The election will also feature another conservative lawmaker Takayuki Kobayashi, 49, who served as economic security minister before Takaichi. Their contest has brought into focus how much support each candidate can garner from the LDP’s conservative base. Takaichi said she will push for revising Japan’s pacifist Constitution at an early date to stipulate the existence of the Self-Defense Forces in line with the LDP’s goal,” reported Kyodo News.

“She also pledged to remove a buoy that China has installed in the waters around the Tokyo-controlled, Beijing-claimed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea,” the report added.

The LDP election is taking place following a slush funds scandal that rocked the ruling party and forced Kishida, whose three-year term ends late September, to step down.

“The election will also feature another conservative lawmaker Takayuki Kobayashi, 49, who served as economic security minister before Takaichi. Their contest has brought into focus how much support each candidate can garner from the LDP’s conservative base,” Kyodo News detailed.

Plane skids off runway in Papua, injuring several

Share

Jayapura, Sep 9 (IANS) A plane carrying 48 people skidded off the runway in Indonesia’s Papua region on Monday morning, according to local police. The incident resulted in injuries to several passengers, although all on board survived.

The ATR-42 aircraft, operated by Trigana Air, was departing from an airport in the Yapen Islands regency bound for the Papuan capital of Jayapura when it veered off the runway. The flight included 42 passengers, among them a baby, and six crew members, reports Xinhua news agency.

“Praise God, everybody survived and has been taken to a hospital for a health checkup,” said local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo. He added that an investigation into the incident is underway and authorities are working to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The local search and rescue agency reported that some passengers sustained injuries and are experiencing trauma as a result of the accident.

Indonesia’s aviation sector faces significant challenges, particularly in the mountainous and weather-challenged terrain of Papua. The region is notoriously difficult to access, with air transport being a crucial link between the country’s thousands of islands.

This incident also recalls a tragic event in 2015, when a Trigana Air plane crashed in Papua, resulting in the deaths of all 54 people on board.

“OG” Delayed Again Due to Pawan Kalyan’s Political Commitments and Natural Disasters

Share

Hyderabad, India – September 9, 2024 – Pawan Kalyan’s highly anticipated film, “OG,” has faced another setback due to unforeseen circumstances. The shooting of the film, originally planned to be completed before the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, has been repeatedly delayed due to Pawan’s political commitments and recent natural disasters.

Earlier this year, the film’s production was halted due to Pawan Kalyan’s involvement in the formation of the coalition government. Despite his busy schedule, Pawan had expressed his intention to resume filming in the coming months. However, the recent floods that have ravaged Andhra Pradesh have forced the production team to once again postpone the shooting.

With Pawan Kalyan actively involved in relief efforts and government administration, it is unlikely that he will be able to allocate time for filming until the situation in the state improves. This means that the release of “OG” is now uncertain, and fans may have to wait longer than expected to see their favorite actor on the big screen.

Despite the delays, “OG” continues to generate excitement among Pawan Kalyan’s fans. The film, directed by Sujeeth, is expected to be a high-octane action thriller with a strong mafia backdrop. Sujeeth’s previous work, “Saaho,” was well-received by audiences, and many believe that his direction will be a perfect fit for Pawan Kalyan’s charismatic screen presence.

While the latest developments are disappointing for those eagerly awaiting the release of “OG,” the film’s production team remains committed to delivering a quality product that will satisfy the expectations of the audience. As the situation in Andhra Pradesh stabilizes, fans can hope for a renewed focus on the film’s production and a potential release date in the near future.
