Australia must achieve net-zero emissions by 2040

Share

Canberra, Sep 5 (IANS) Australia must reach net-zero emissions by 2040 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the government’s top climate change agency has said.

The Climate Change Authority (CCA) on Thursday released a report on Australia’s progress to reach net-zero emissions, which was compiled at the request of the federal parliament.

The CCA review found that Australia must achieve a 75 per cent emissions reduction from 2005 levels by 2035 and net-zero emissions by 2040 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, Xinhua news agency reported.

The governing Labor Party has set a 2030 emissions reduction target of 43 per cent and a 2050 net zero target.

The new report said that the 2050 target would be consistent with limiting the average global temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius.

It identified the potential technology transition and pathways to decarbonization for six sectors — energy and electricity, agriculture and land, built environment, industry and waste, transport and resources.

The report relies on available and achievable technologies and argues against waiting for unspecified future solutions.

“Working to reduce emissions now, using existing technologies is far more efficient and effective than waiting and hoping that bigger breakthroughs will do all the work. Waiting for new, better, cheaper technologies is tantamount to choosing to continue to emit,” it said.

Releasing the report, CCA chair Matt Kean said that all sectors of the economy and all levels of government must plan and act together to achieve a rapid and orderly transition to net zero.

He called for developers of renewable energy projects to engage with regional communities to better explain the benefits of the rollout.

“By overcoming the barriers to reducing emissions, we can make the Australian economy more prosperous while creating new industries and jobs, improving our energy security, protecting the environment, and reducing the cost of living,” Kean, former treasurer of the state of New South Wales, said in a statement.

The report said that mature renewable technologies such as solar and wind for generation and batteries for storage would get Australia much of the way to net zero, but that opportunities also exist with the rapid development of new technologies, including hydrogen.

Indonesia calls for global collaboration on green energy transition

Share

Jakarta, Sep 5 (IANS) The two-day International Sustainability Forum (ISF), gathering state leaders, decision-makers, CEOs and sustainability experts from 53 countries to build collaboration for a green energy transition agenda, began in the Indonesian capital on Thursday.

At the opening ceremony of the forum, which boasts nearly 11,000 participants, President Joko Widodo said the forum would centre its discussions on the significance of energy resilience, the impacts of climate change, and the critical need for energy transition and sustainability, Xinhua news agency reported.

“I hope the ISF can serve as a platform where knowledge, experience, and resources converge to become shared assets and foster collaboration in addressing the challenge of climate change,” he said.

Highlighting Indonesia’s vast potential for green energy and carbon capture, Widodo pointed to the country’s 3.3-million-hectare mangrove forests, which he noted were 8 to 12 times more effective at absorbing carbon than tropical rainforests.

However, he stressed that this potential could only be fully realised if developed nations stepped up their investment efforts and provided easier funding access for developing countries.

“Indonesia is open to collaboration with any nation to harness this potential, create a greener world, and ensure fair access to green energy,” Widodo stressed, calling for inclusive and sustainable economic development.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, echoed Widodo’s message and emphasised the importance of acknowledging the varied starting points of different nations in their decarbonisation journeys.

He said that every country has different capacities, capabilities, and limitations when it comes to decarbonisation, adding that the forum “is a reminder that collaboration is essential for advancing our sustainability agenda.”

“We will address energy transition, green inclusivity, biodiversity, nature conservation, sustainable living, and the blue economy. We also anticipate the signing of several landmark MoUs in the coming days,” he said.

South Korea to strengthen space exploration capabilities to compete in global space race

Share

Seoul, Sep 5 (IANS) The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) unveiled an ambitious vision on Thursday to develop a competitive space transportation system and a forward-looking exploration strategy, aiming to join the elite ranks in the global space race.

Yoon Young-bin, head of South Korea’s National Space Agency, emphasised the goal of creating a space economy by building a cost-effective transportation system by the 2030s, Yonhap news agency reported.

He said KASA will build a “space passageway” and develop an orbital transfer vehicle and reentry vehicle to lower the cost of space transportation in low Earth orbit to under $1,000 per kilogram.

South Korea’s current homegrown space rocket, Nuri, has a shipping cost of $24,000 per kilogram, while SpaceX offers transport for around $2,000 to $3,000 per kilogram.

KASA is also mapping out a comprehensive road map for deep space exploration, including missions to Lagrange point L4, the moon and Mars, Yoon said.

Earlier this year, KASA announced its plan to send a spaceship to L4, one of the five Lagrange points about 380,000 kilometres from Earth, in 2035 to observe the sun in cooperation with major space powers, including the United States, Japan and Britain.

Furthermore, the agency envisions constructing the world’s first space observatory in the L4 region to effectively monitor space weather that has a huge influence on communications, aircraft operations and space exploration.

The agency’s long-term plans include landing a homegrown spacecraft on the moon by 2032 and on Mars by 2045.

Additionally, KASA is focused on fostering a private-led aerospace industry, supporting the development of advanced radar satellites, hypersonic propulsion, swarm drones and hydrogen-powered aircraft.

Yoon said KASA will increase efforts to expand its presence among global space powers by actively participating in international cooperation projects and fostering the Korean space industry’s research and development capabilities.

“Double Ismart”: A Disappointing Sequel and Early OTT Release

Share

The recent release of “Double Ismart” on Amazon Prime Video within three weeks of its theatrical debut has sparked discussions about the appropriate gap between theatrical and OTT releases. While industry experts have advocated for a minimum waiting period of 45 days to two months, “Double Ismart” deviated from this norm, becoming the latest example of a film making a premature transition to streaming.

Despite the high expectations surrounding “Double Ismart” as a sequel to the 2019 blockbuster “Ismart Shankar,” the film failed to meet critical and commercial success. Negative reviews criticized the outdated storyline, indecent comedy, and lack of emotional depth. The film’s underwhelming performance at the box office prompted the makers to expedite its OTT release.

The early availability of “Double Ismart” on Amazon Prime Video has surprised fans of the lead actor, Ram Pothineni. While the streaming platform offers a wider audience, the film’s theatrical failure raises questions about its potential success on OTT. It remains to be seen whether “Double Ismart” can find a second life on the streaming platform or if its early release will further diminish its impact.

This incident highlights the ongoing debate about the ideal release window for films in the current market. As the industry continues to evolve, the balance between theatrical and OTT releases will likely remain a subject of discussion and experimentation.

Anirudh Ravichander: A Controversial Soundtrack for “Devara”

Share

Anirudh Ravichander, a prominent figure in the South Indian music industry, has been facing criticism for the soundtrack of the pan-Indian film “Devara.” Despite the immense popularity of his previous works and the anticipation surrounding his collaboration with the film’s star, NTR, the composer has been accused of plagiarism in several of the released songs.

While the songs “Fear” and “Chuttamalle” have topped the charts, they have also drawn comparisons to previous works by Anirudh and other artists. “Fear” was alleged to be similar to “Badass” from “Leo,” while “Chuttamalle” was criticized for resembling “Manike” by Sri Lankan artist Yohani.

The most recent song, “Daavudi,” although gaining popularity, has also faced criticism for its resemblance to “Arabic Kuthu” from “Beast” and “Kaavalayya” from “Jailer.” These allegations have raised concerns about Anirudh’s originality and creativity, despite the commercial success of his work.

Despite the controversies, Anirudh’s music for “Devara” remains a significant highlight of the film, and his talent as a composer is undeniable. However, the plagiarism allegations pose a challenge to his reputation and could potentially impact his future projects.

Kavya Thapar: A Promising Start, But Struggling to Find Success

Share

Kavya Thapar, a rising star in the Telugu film industry, has faced a series of setbacks despite being part of high-profile projects. Despite her undeniable talent and potential, luck has not been on her side, leading to a string of box office failures that have significantly impacted her career trajectory.

Her journey began with a promising start in “Ek Mini Katha,” which garnered a decent response on the OTT platform. However, subsequent films like “Ooru Peru Bhairavakona,” “Eagle,” and “Bichagadu 2” failed to meet expectations, casting a shadow over her career.

Kavya Thapar pinned her hopes on “Double Ismart,” a film featuring Ram in the lead and directed by Puri Jagannadh. Despite her glamorous appearance and the film’s initial buzz, it ultimately underperformed, further jeopardizing her career.

Now, all eyes are on “Viswam,” releasing on October 11th. This film marks a comeback attempt for both Gopichand and Sreenu Vaitla, who have also been struggling with box office failures. Kavya Thapar’s future hinges on the success of “Viswam,” as she desperately needs a hit to revive her career. With so much riding on this film, only time will tell whether it will be a turning point for Kavya Thapar.
