Computer whiz kids of 21st C no longer nerds, but more creative

New Delhi, Aug 12 (IANS) The computer whiz kid, long defined as the nerd who stays up all night dissembling computers, harkens back to the 80s, but a new study reveals that this image has been broadened, with creativity and a collaborative manner now being prioritised.
The study by King’s College London and the University of Reading in the UK revealed a more nuanced understanding of the ‘ideal’ computer science student among young people, challenging traditional stereotypes of socially awkward, highly intelligent males who excel in detail-oriented tasks but lack interpersonal skills.
The research analysed responses from over 3,000 secondary school students aged 11-16 in England, totaling around 9,000 entries. The findings indicate that while intelligence remains a valued trait, young people appreciate a broader set of characteristics in computer science students, including creativity and collaboration.
Professor Billy Wong from the University of Reading called the news “encouraging to widen participation in computer science education”.
Wong said, “stereotypes persist because they have a basis, but they can also discourage certain groups from pursuing computer science”.
The findings showed along with “being knowledgeable and hardworking”, “softer skills such as creativity and collaboration” also matter, said Wong.
“This challenges the outdated stereotype of computer scientists as being merely ‘clever’ but lacking social skills.”
Key findings from the study include the identification of eight main clusters of characteristics associated with the ideal computer science student: smart and clever, knowledgeable and interested,
Determined and hardworking, kind and helpful, creative, independent, confident, and collaborative. The research also found that students aspiring to careers in computer science tend to value a diverse range of traits beyond just intelligence.
Notably, girls were more likely to describe the ideal computer science student as independent, while being less likely to emphasise kindness and helpfulness. Students from less advantaged backgrounds were more likely to prioritise intelligence as the most important trait.
Professor Wong emphasised that these insights can assist educators and policymakers in promoting a more inclusive image of computer science, potentially encouraging a wider range of young people to consider the field.
Long live vibrant and ever flourishing Mauritius-Bharat relationship

Port Louis, Aug 15 (IANS) Exchanging greetings on India’s Independence Day, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and PM Narendra Modi on Thursday cited the longstanding bilateral partnership between the two countries and the broad-based desire for its further growth.
“Warmest congratulations to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji and to the people of India on the occasion of your 78th Independence Day. Long live the vibrant and ever flourishing Mauritius Bharat relationship,” Jugnauth posted on X.
Replying to the Mauritius Prime Minister’s greetings, PM Modi said: “Thank you PM Pravind Jugnauth for the Independence Day wishes. May the friendship between our nations continue to grow and become even more multifaceted”.
Last month, during his two-day visit to Mauritius, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar had inaugurated 12 High Impact Community Development Projects, a mediclinic in Grand Bois built with Indian grant assistance and also the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra, testifying the close relationship between the two countries.
During his visit, Jaishankar held extensive discussions with PM Jugnauth on various aspects of bilateral ties, including the development partnership, defence and maritime cooperation, economic and trade ties, and people-to-people linkages.
The EAM also presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to the first two 7th-generation Mauritian citizens and handed over a royalty cheque for the sale of nautical charts, as per the bilateral MoU on sales of navigational charts.
The visit, said the Ministry of External Affairs Ministry, underscored the importance India attaches to Mauritius as an important pillar of India’s Vision SAGAR, and ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
It also reaffirmed the continued commitment of both countries to strengthening their multi-dimensional bilateral relationship and deepening their close people-to-people ties.
Cementing the deep-rooted cultural and civilisational bond, the Mauritius PM visited New Delhi in June to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony along with several other leaders from the neighbouring countries.
South Korea voices ‘deep regret’ over Japan PM’s offering to Yasukuni Shrine

Seoul, Aug 15 (IANS) South Korea’s foreign ministry expressed “deep regret” on Thursday that Japanese political leaders, including Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, sent offerings or paid visits to a war shrine, a symbol of Japan’s militaristic past.
The statement came after visits by the Japanese ministers to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honours Japanese war dead, including 14 Class A criminals convicted by the Allies in trials that followed World War II, Yonhap news agency reported.
“The government expresses deep disappointment and regret that Japan’s responsible leaders again sent offerings or paid visits to the Yasukuni Shrine that beautifies Japan’s past war of aggression,” the ministry said in a statement.
“We urge the responsible leaders of Japan to squarely face up to history and show through action a humble reflection and genuine repentance for the past.”
Japanese Defence Minister Minoru Kihara was among the officials who visited the shrine, prompting Seoul’s foreign ministry to summon Taisuke Mibae, deputy chief of mission at the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, to strongly protest the visit.
It marked the first time in three years for a sitting Japanese defence minister to visit the shrine.
“(We) cannot but deplore the anachronistic act,” a foreign ministry official said.
The defence ministry also called in a defence attache at the Japanese Embassy to strongly protest Kihara’s visit to the shrine, it said, noting that it goes against the two countries’ efforts to develop future-oriented relations.

Will Chiru Announce His Next Project On 22nd?

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s birthday is arriving quick and fast. Along with ‘Vishwambhara’ teaser, fans will also be treated with the re-release of Chiru’s iconic film ‘Indra’ in theatres. It is going to be a festival for the Mega fans and everyone is happy with this. But there is still curiosity over Megastar’s next project after ‘Vishwambhara’.
Discussions have been going on with a lot of directors but nothing has been finalized yet. Harish Shankar planned to work with Chiru but things did not fall in place. He is now going to work with Ram Pothineni and will focus on ‘Ustaad Bhagat Singh’ as well when Pawan allots the dates. Chiru listened to stories from young directors like Anudeep KV and Venky Kudumula too but they did not move forward.
The only possibility that is being heard is Megastar working with ‘Godfather’ director Mohan Raja once again. BVS Ravi will be providing the story and this project is expected to be announced on 22nd August. If this project doesn’t get finalized, there are not many options left. ‘Vishwambhara’ is about to get wrapped up which means that Chiru needs to take a decision on his next project as soon as possible.
If not, Mega fans need to be satisfied with ‘Vishwambhara’ teaser and ‘Indra’ re-release. After ‘Bholaa Shankar’, Chiru stopped giving importance to speed and focused more on the scripts. Bobby and Vassishta proved themselves while Meher Ramesh delivered a disaster with his outdated flick. We need to see if Chiru picks a young director and go forward or not.
