Supreme Court of India adopts AI for judicial translation & legal research
New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) The Supreme Court of India has adopted Artificial Intelligence (AI) language technology to translate judicial documents, enhance legal research, and automate various processes, said Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Law and Justice, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Since February 2023, AI has also been employed for transcribing oral arguments in Constitution Bench matters.
The minister informed that to oversee the translation of significant Supreme Court and High Court judgments into vernacular languages, a Committee led by an Hon’ble Judge of the Supreme Court has been established.
“The Committee is having regular meetings with the Sub-Committees of High Courts comprising Hon’ble Judges to expedite the process of translation,” Meghwal said.
The AI translation committees of the High Courts are actively monitoring the translation of Supreme Court and High Court judgments into regional languages. Currently, eight High Courts have already launched e-High Court Reports (e-HCR), with others in the process of doing so.
Furthermore, the AI Committees have instructed the High Courts to request their respective State Governments to translate all Central and State legislation, rules, and regulations into regional languages and make them available on State websites.
“It has also been impressed upon all the State Governments to extend full support to the respective High Courts in the exercise of translation of judgments since it is part of ‘access to justice’ as envisaged under the Constitution of India,” the MoS said.
Using AI, “36,271 Supreme Court judgments have been translated into Hindi, and 17,142 judgments have been translated into 16 other regional languages,” till August 5, the Minister said, adding that these translations are available on the e-SCR portal.
Notably, no separate funds have been sanctioned for this translation project. Despite this, the Supreme Court continues to make significant strides in ensuring that legal documents are accessible to all citizens, enhancing transparency and inclusivity in the Indian judicial system, the minister said.
Student leaders rewarded with key ministries in Bangladesh interim government
Dhaka, Aug 9 (IANS) Nahid Islam, one of the main coordinators of the anti-quota protests that eventually led to the resignation of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday, was on Friday given a key role in the newly-formed interim government in the country.
Nahid will take care of the telecommunications, information technology and posts ministry in the government being led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Asif Mahmud, another key figure in the ‘students against discrimination’ movement, will look after the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the government announced on Friday.
An interim government in Bangladesh was sworn in on Thursday night, with Yunus serving as its Chief Advisor.
Yunus has so far kept several key ministries with himself, including defence, education, railways, agriculture, commerce, etc.
A student activist, Nahid also emerged as a key figure in the formation of the interim government in the country.
He not only held several rounds of discussions with Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman after Hasina’s departure from Dhaka but also played a major role in convincing Yunus to join the interim set up.
He had assured that the interim national government will have fair representation from the student community and members of the civil society.
As Yunus arrived in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon, he was welcomed at the airport by Army Chief Zaman and student leaders, including Nahid Islam.
The interim government comprises 17 members, who come from varied backgrounds ranging from human rights activists to former central bank governor and an ex-election commissioner.
President Murmu urges diaspora in New Zealand to become part of ‘India story’
Auckland, Aug 9 (IANS) Inviting them to be part of the ‘India Story’ during the Amrit Kaal, President Droupadi Murmu on Friday lauded the Indian community in New Zealand for its role in strengthening the partnership between the two countries.
“Our relations with New Zealand are quite deep and multifaceted. The Indian community has played an important role in its development and prosperity. The dedication, hard work and creative spirit of the Indian community in New Zealand is admirable. These are the values that have guided us for generations, and will continue to inspire us in the future,” said President Murmu while interacting with members of the Indian community in Auckland on Friday.
The President, who arrived in New Zealand from Fiji on Wednesday, is currently on the second leg of her visit to the Pacific region. Her visit assumes significance as it is the second Presidential visit to New Zealand in eight years.
Addressing the diaspora, President Murmu also announced that India will soon be opening a Consulate in Auckland.
“We see our diaspora Indian community across the world as important partners in our journey to build the India of our dreams,” she said.
“I would like to commend the New Zealand Government and the people of this great country who have warmly embraced the Indian community. Your inclusive and welcoming spirit has enabled our community to flourish and prosper,” the President added.
On Thursday, President Murmu held discussions on various issues, ranging from deepening cultural ties to commitment for regional and global security, with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, the country’s Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro and the Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Winston Peters.
“It was a pleasure to welcome the Indian President to New Zealand. Her visit marks a very special occasion for our relationship with India as we continue to build meaningful connections between our two countries,” said Luxon.
A handing-over of an instrument of ratification on the International Solar Alliance by New Zealand and an exchange of an agreement on Arrangements for Customs Cooperation that will strengthen trade and smoothen customs formalities between the two countries also took place.
President Murmu will now visit the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, the final leg of her visit, at the invitation of President Jose Ramos-Horta. This will be the first-ever Head of State visit from India to the southeast Asian nation.
During the visit, President Murmu will hold a bilateral meeting with President Horta, Timor-Leste PM Kay Rala ‘Xanana’ Gusmao and also interact with members of the Indian community.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said earlier this week that the State Visit by President Murmu to Fiji, New Zealand and Timor-Leste underscores the importance India attaches to its bilateral relations with these countries and reflects New Delhi’s strong focus on the ‘Act East’ policy which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 9th East Asia Summit in 2014.
Bulgaria’s president appoints new caretaker PM
Sofia, Aug 9 (IANS) Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev on Friday nominated Goritsa Grancharova – Kozhareva as new caretaker prime minister, tasking her with proposing a caretaker government.
The constitution does not specify a deadline for the caretaker prime minister to present the cabinet lineup, but the president has requested this to be done by August 19, Xinhua news agency reported.
Given the situation that has arisen and the consultations with political parties on Thursday, the most appropriate date for the new early parliamentary elections was October 20, Radev said. “In this regard, you should propose the composition and structure of the caretaker government no later than August 19, so that we can fit into the legal requirements,” Radev told Kozhareva.
Kozhareva’s cabinet will replace the current caretaker government led by Dimitar Glavchev, who was appointed on April 9 after the resignation of Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov on March 5. The parliament had failed to produce a regular cabinet after the snap elections on June 9.
Glavchev, who previously served as president of the Bulgarian National Audit Office (BNAO), was selected from a limited pool of eligible candidates defined by constitutional amendments passed in December 2023.
These amendments stipulate that the caretaker prime minister must be chosen from among the speaker of the National Assembly, the governor or deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, the president or vice-president of the BNAO, or the Ombudsman or a deputy Ombudsman.
Radev said that over the past months, tensions have escalated due to suspicions of political use of Glavchev’s government. “I have always believed that caretaker governments are meant to calm the tense political situation,” Radev said.
“Dear Kozhareva, in this situation, you are the only possible option,” Radev said during the appointment.
Kozhareva, holding a master’s degree in accounting and control from the DA Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov, has extensive experience in banking and finance. She had held various high-ranking positions within the BNAO before being elected deputy head in 2015. She became acting head of BNAO in April when Glavchev was appointed caretaker prime minister.
After the appointment, Kozhareva expressed her commitment to forming a cabinet that would ensure the state’s normal functioning until a regular government is established.
No Chance Of Arresting Raj Tarun For Now!
It is well aware that a police case was filed against hero Raj Tarun as he was stuck in a controversy with Lavanya which became quite public. The ‘Uyyala Jampala’ hero was asked to come to the Narsingi police station for investigation but he did not attend it and sent his lawyer instead. The news quickly spread all over the Raj Tarun might get arrested.
But there is no chance of it and Raj Tarun got an anticipatory bail from Telangana High Court. They ordered the police not to arrest him. The court directly questioned Lavanya regarding issuing anticipatory bail to Raj Tarun. They asked her for proof of their marriage and Lavanya failed to show anything. She couldn’t even showcase a wedding invitation and her lawyer couldn’t find any solution to it as well.
Lavanya’s lawyer asked for some time to gather evidence and the court did not agree to it. With some conditions laid out, the court gave anticipatory bail to Raj Tarun. He paid 20,000 rupees for it and he got a temporary respite from the situation. As we know, Lavanya accused Raj Tarun of being in a relationship with her, marrying her, getting her pregnant and forcing her into abortion. She said to the media that she submitted all the proofs to the police but she couldn’t show them in court.
The controversy surrounding Raj Tarun and Lavanya has become a big source of revenue for social media channels. Recently, Raj Tarun’s friend Sekhar Basha made more allegations against Lavanya like torturing Raj Tarun and taking drugs constantly. He even said that Lavanya used to beat Raj Tarun with the awards he won for his acting.

సుహాస్- చాందినీ చౌజరి జంటగా సందీప్ రాజ్ తెరకెక్కించిన `కలర్ ఫోటో` జాతీయ అవార్డు సొంతం దక్కించుకున్న సంగతి తెలిసిందే. రొమాంటిక్ డ్రామాగా తెరకెక్కిన సినిమా కమర్శియల్ గా విజయం సాధించలేదు గానీ నేషనల్ అవార్డు రావడంతో ఫేమస్ అయింది. ఈ సినిమాకు పనిచేసిందంతా కొత్త వారే. అయినా జాతీయ స్థాయిలో కలర్ ఫోటో పేరు మారు మ్రోగింది.
