Andhra Pradesh to take up repair of damaged roads on war footing
Amaravati, July 12 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed the Roads and Buildings Department to take up repairs of damaged roads on a war footing.
He asked the officers to immediately call for the tenders for the necessary works and complete the road repairs.
During a review meeting on the prevailing condition of roads in various parts of the state, the officers informed the Chief Minister that during the five-year rule of the YSR Congress, even potholes were not filled while pending bills were not cleared for the contractors.
The Chief Minister was told that since the bills of the contractors, worth crores of rupees, have not been cleared they did not come forward to take up the road-repair works.
The officials said that a minimum of Rs 300 crore was needed immediately to fill the potholes on the roads across the state. It was revealed that there are potholes on the roads to an extent of 4,151 km while roads to a length of 2,939 km need immediate attention.
After hearing the officials, Naidu directed them to immediately take up the work of filling the potholes and focus mainly on the roads that need urgent repairs. He said that road users have faced various problems since the previous government did not bother to take up the repairs of the damaged roads.
The Chief Minister conducted the review meeting with the R&B Department officials and academic experts on adopting the latest technology for the construction of roads in the state.
He discussed with the professors of IIT and SRM University, Tirupati how to adopt the latest technology in the construction of quality roads with minimum expenditure. They examined in detail how to take up the work not in the traditional way but by utilising various kinds of material for the construction of roads which can last long, particularly in heavy traffic areas.
Roads and Buildings Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy, officials of the department, professors, construction experts, and others participated in the meeting.
EU threatens to penalise X over DSA breach, Musk alleges ‘secret deal’ offer
London, July 12 (IANS) The European Commission on Friday informed Elon Musk-owned X social media platform that it is in breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA) in areas linked to dark patterns, advertising transparency and data access for researchers.
In a statement, the Commission said if its preliminary are confirmed, the Commission would adopt a non-compliance decision finding that X is in breach of the DSA.
“Such a decision could entail fines of up to 6 per cent of the total worldwide annual turnover of the provider, and order the provider to take measures to address the breach,” said the Commission.
The Commission can also impose periodic penalty payments to compel the X platform to comply.
In a post on X, the tech billionaire alleged that the European Commission offered X “an illegal secret deal: if we quietly censored speech without telling anyone, they would not fine us”.
“The other platforms accepted that deal. X did not,” alleged Musk.
According to Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for a ‘Europe Fit for the Digital Age,’ X doesn’t comply with the DSA in key transparency areas.
“It misleads users, fails to provide adequate ad repository and blocks access to data for researchers. It’s the first time we issue preliminary findings under the Digital Services Act,” she posted on X.

Gitanas Nauseda inaugurated as President of Lithuania for second term
Vilnius, July 13 (IANS) Gitanas Nauseda was inaugurated as President of Lithuania for a second term, according to a statement from Lithuania’s Presidential Palace.
The inaugural ceremony started at noon on Friday with a ceremonial event in the Lithuanian Parliament, the Seimas, where Nauseda took the presidential oath with his hand on the Constitution, Xinhua news agency reported.
At the inauguration, Nauseda said that Lithuania’s defence budget should reach four per cent of GDP, which would allow Lithuania to develop long-range air defence, a missile shield to protect the Baltic Sea coast, and fortifications to protect land borders.
On domestic policy, Nauseda promised to further reduce social exclusion, create a more family- and senior-friendly environment, as well as focus on regions, culture, and education.
After the oath-taking ceremony at the Seimas, the President attended a Holy Mass at Vilnius Cathedral and saluted a formation of colour guards, squads, and commanders in Cathedral Square.
The Lithuanian government has returned its powers to the President, who will instruct the Cabinet to continue its work as a caretaker government until the Seimas votes again on Ingrida Simonyte’s nomination to continue as Prime Minister.
Nauseda, a 60-year-old economist, was re-elected president in May after defeating his rival Simonyte in the second round of presidential elections.
Indian Consulate helping students after Beryl wreaks havoc in Houston
Houston, July 13 (IANS)With Hurricane Beryl leaving a trail of destruction and several areas without power for days on the Texas coast this week, the Consulate General of India in Houston continues to provide assistance and emergency necessities to the Indians students at the local university.
“None of us are immune from the effects of nature’s fury. As the city administration and other authorities are working on full restoration of power in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, we met the Indian students studying at the University of Houston to check on them and provide them with some emergency provisions.” the CGI posted on X on Saturday.
Severe weather, flooding and massive power cuts has thrown life out of gear in the Texas and Louisiana region.
While the authorities are working to normalise the situation, the Indian Consulate continued to offer emergency consular services banking on back-up power and stopgap internet service.
The CGI thanked the Houston administration, including Sugarland, Pearland, Stafford and Missouri and all other authorities, for their efforts to restore normalcy, especially the power situation.
“We also thank the various Indian community organisations including SEWA, BAPS and VPSS for their initiatives to help the whole community in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl,” the Indian Consulate said in a statement Friday.
Man dead, another rescued after boat capsizes in Australia
Sydney, July 13 (IANS) A man died and another was rescued after their boat capsized when crossing the Tweed River bar in far north of Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state on Saturday.
At around 6.00 a.m. local time, emergency services were called to the north wall of the Tweed River, following reports of two people spotted clinging to the upturned hull of a 6.5-meter half-cabin runabout boat, Xinhua news agency reported.
NSW Police Force confirmed that one man was pulled out of the water before being rushed to a nearby hospital to be checked as a precaution.
A second man was winched from the rough sea by a rescue helicopter. Paramedics attempted to revive him at Duranbah Beach, but the man was declared deceased at the scene.
Police officers are currently working to formally identify the victim.
It is believed that the pair launched their watercraft from Kennedy Drive Boat Ramp in Tweed Heads a short time earlier, and they were heading out across the bar when the accident occurred.
Initial inquiries have suggested that neither of them was wearing a life jacket.
According to the NSW government, the Tweed River originates on the slopes of the nearby Mount Burrell, and flows for approximately 80 km to the ocean at Tweed Heads.
As coastal bars commonly feature shallow depths, shifting sandbanks, strong currents, and large breaking waves, the state government has made it clear to the public that crossing these bars can be very dangerous, even in calm conditions.
The latest forecast showed that a 1.5 to 2.5-meter swell is expected at the Tweed Heads coastal bar on Saturday.
