Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe Into Karur Stampede During Vijay’s Rally

A bench comprising Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice N.V. To oversee the investigation, the Supreme Court has constituted a three-member Supervisory Committee, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi. Justice Rastogi will appoint two senior IPS officers, not from Tamil Nadu, to assist him. The CBI will submit monthly progress reports to this committee to ensure accountability and transparency.
The Court also criticized the Madras High Court (Chennai Bench) for constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Tamil Nadu Police, noting that the original petition sought only a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for political rallies. It emphasized that the Karur case falls under the jurisdiction of the Madurai Bench, and the Chennai Bench had no authority over it.
Further, the Supreme Court questioned why TVK was permitted to hold the rally when AIADMK’s request for the same venue had earlier been denied on safety grounds. Concerns were also raised about postmortems conducted at midnight and cremations carried out at 4 a.m. for 30–40 victims.
