Deepika Padukone has finally addressed the recent controversy surrounding her alleged demand for an 8-hour work schedule — a move that many believe led to her exit from Kalki 2898 AD and fueled discussions about Spirit.
Known for her grace and professionalism, Deepika spoke candidly about the matter while attending an event in Madhya Pradesh on World Mental Health Day, marking 10 years of her foundation Live Love Laugh.
Speaking to CNN TV18, she didn’t shy away from acknowledging the challenges women face in the film industry. “Slowly but surely, I am focused on bringing about change in the workplace as far as the Indian film industry is concerned because it’s brutal,” she said. “We have a tendency to work in a way that’s ‘chalta hai’. I’ve never been that person — I always look for ways to make things better.”
When questioned directly about her preference for fixed work hours, Deepika was forthright. “If by virtue of being a woman, that comes across as being pushy or demanding, so be it,” she said firmly. “It’s no secret that many male superstars in the industry have worked 8-hour shifts for years — and it has never made headlines.”
The actress added that this is not a new practice in Bollywood. “Many male actors work Monday to Friday, for eight hours, and don’t work on weekends either. But when a woman asks for the same, it becomes news,” she noted, subtly calling out the gender bias.
Deepika also pointed out that she isn’t alone in setting professional boundaries. “I know several women, especially new mothers, who have started working 8-hour days too — but that never made headlines,” she remarked with a wry smile.
Asked if she fears professional repercussions, Deepika remained composed. “I’ve fought many such battles — quietly and with dignity. Whether it was about fair pay or working conditions, I’ve always stood my ground. Sometimes these things become public, but that’s not my intent. I believe in fighting silently and respectfully,” she concluded.
Her powerful statement underscores a persistent double standard in the film industry — where male stars’ terms are accepted without question, but women’s choices continue to be scrutinized.
