‘Had Suicidal Thoughts Till the Age of 25’

Before the country recognised the talent of AR Rahman, the celebrated composer says there was a phase in his life where he felt like a failure and thought about ending his life almost every day.
The Oscar-winning composer says the initial low phase of his career eventually helped him emerge braver.
“Up until 25, I used to think about suicide. Most of us feel they are not good enough. Because I lost my father, there was this void… There were so many things happening.
“(But) that in a way made me more fearless. Death is a permanent thing for everyone. Since everything created has an expiry date, so why be afraid of anything?” Rahman told PTI.
The turnaround for the 51-year-old composer came when he built his recording studio Panchathan Record Inn in his backyard in hometown Chennai.
“Before that, things were dormant so may be it (the feeling) manifested then. Because of my father’s death and the way he was working, I didn’t do many movies. I got 35 movies and I did two.
“Everyone wondered ‘How are you going to survive? You have everything, grab it.’ I was 25 then. I couldn’t do that. It’s like eating everything. You become numb. So even if you eat small meals, make it fulfilling,” he adds.
The composer talks about hard times and other events in his life in “Notes of a Dream: The Authorized Biography of AR Rahman”.
Written by author Krishna Trilok, the biography, in association with Landmark and Penguin Random House, was launched here, Saturday.
Rahman was nine when his father RK Shekhar, who was film-score composer, passed away and the family had to rent out his musical equipment to get by. Rahman, thus, took to music at a very young age.
“I finished everything between the age of 12 to 22. It was boring for me to do all the normal stuff. I didn’t want to do it,” he says.
In his 20s, before he made his debut as a composer with Mani Ratnam’s Roja (1992), Rahman along with his family embraced Sufi Islam.
He reinvented himself by letting go not only the baggage from the past, but also his birth name – Dileep Kumar, which he says, he despised.
“I never liked my original name Dileep Kumar. I don’t even know why I hated it. I felt it didn’t match my personality. I wanted to become another person. I felt like that would define and change my whole (being). I wanted to get rid of all the past luggage,” he says.
With Roja, Rahman shot to instant fame as the wonder kid in the industry, who changed the grammar of music and sounds.
But creating music is not a lonely process for the musician as much as it is “internal”.
“You manifest who you are and let it out. So when you are ideating on your mental drawing book, you need a lot of self-analysis and you have to dive deep within you.
“You need to listen to yourself. It’s hard to listen to your inner side. But once you do, you have to let lose and forget yourself,” he adds.
It was for this reason, Rahman says, that he works only during late nights or early mornings.
“If I am going deep inside something and suddenly there’s a knock on the door, I’ll come to reality from a very different world and I won’t be able to go back to the same spot again. This is one of the reasons I prefer (being at work) very early mornings like 5 AM or 6 AM or the nights,” he says.
Rahman says the most important thing for him is not to feel bored and constantly try to do something new; be it professionally or personally.
“You feel jaded if you do the same thing. You need to find different things to do. For me travelling, parenting and spending time with my family — though I can’t do that much — is beautiful. It helps a lot.”

‘Remote With Rahul, Batteries With Naidu’

TRS leaders seem to be fantasising too much about what would happen to Telangana if the Grand Alliance comes to power, “even by mistake” and KTR is no exception to that. Calling the alliance a Grand Joke at a meeting in Mahbubabad, KT Rama Rao said: “The remote would be in the hands of Congress president Rahul Gandhi, while the batteries will be in the hands of TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu,” he claimed. Telangana Congress leaders would be spectators to a grand show of puppetry, he added.
“Telangana Congress leaders have stooped down to such a level that they are seeking the TDP chief’s help to recommend their names to Rahul Gandhi for a ticket,” he mocked and alleged, reacting to a meeting in Delhi between State Congress leaders and Chandrababu Naidu.
“Even senior leaders like K Jana Reddy made a beeline in front of Naidu’s room. It’s shameful,” he alleged. He went on to claim that “anti-Telangana Naidu” would dictate terms here if the Grand Alliance comes to power.
He asked how Rahul agreed to join hands with Naidu when the latter had addressed his mother, Sonia Gandhi, as an “anaconda of corruption.” The second-in-command in the pink party called upon the people to decide if they wanted his father, KCR, “who is the face of self-respect of Telangana” as their Chief Minister, or stay under the “clutches of Andhra and Delhi rulers.”
While KTR and TRS leaders seem to be doing a great job in trading blows to the TDP and Congress, they need to remember that people are watching their words and language carefully!
Modi’s First Reaction On Grand Alliance

In one his fiercest criticisms against the anti-BJP front, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the opposition’s efforts to forge a ‘grand alliance’ as a “manifestation of dynasty politics.” Their fake unity was nothing but an election gimmick, he added.
The Prime Minister took a dig at Congress President Rahul Gandhi, saying he was like a “lie machine” whom people do not trust. Responding to a question on ‘Mahagathbadhan’, Prime Minister said: “There is no need to panic or worry about their false propaganda. The people who lie are not accepted by society. People hate those who talk about negative politics, those who see bad things in goodness of the country, those who abuse and insult the Army. We have to move forward on the belief of our deeds,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that the public has to be reminded about the situation in the past. “There was dynasty and family rule. We are the people who have come to change the future of the country, but they are concerned about dynasty. Their concern is for their children. They think that if the BJP ruled the country for five or ten more years, what would happen to some 200 to 500 families, who had been at the centre of power for 70 years. They have gathered to save the dynasty. They do not care for the poor,” Modi said.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has been continuously attacking the Modi government over the Rafale fighter jet deal and has been alleging corruption. The BJP has been countering him by branding his accusations as lies.
Interestingly, Modi’s jibe on “200 to 500 families in India” on dynastic politics also targeted TDP and TRS as both the Chief Ministers of Telugu States have brought their sons into politics and are making efforts to push their growth in politics. We are yet to watch how the TRS and TDP cadre react to the Prime Minister’s remarks!
KTR’s Sense Of Humour On Upasana’s Tweet

Rather a serious attitude and technical tweets, politicians need to be little humorous and casual as well, and Telangana’s IT Minister KT Rama Rao is a perfect example of that. After getting into campaigning mode, he has upped his humorous tone.
Reaching out to KTR on twitter, other day Apollo heiress and mega hero Ram Charan’s wife Upasana shared a request regarding a new hostel to be built for girls. ‘Dearest #telanganagovernment ur doing a great job. But we need a bit more love from you. Pls help the girls out. I’m doing my bit as well. Pls consider sanctioning a new hostel for them’, she tweeted.
Reacting on the same, KTR replied, ‘Glad the school has been sanctioned by the Govt & for the hostel to be sanctioned, we have to wait until 11th December for next Govt to be formed. P.s: Thanks for the vote of confidence’.
That sent social media into rolling as twitterati are busy discussing KTR’s sense of humor. It looked like he has efficiently used a request from Upasana as a promotion for his father KCR led TRS, which is looking forward to swaying the upcoming general election in Telangana.

Given that the film has high occupancy, telecasting on a TV will affect its long run in cinemas
