Pragya Jaiswal Shines at Gaddar Awards

The inaugural edition of the Gaddar Telangana Film Awards took place in Hyderabad on Saturday night, celebrating cinematic excellence and paying tribute to the late revolutionary poet Gaddar. Supported by the Telangana Government, the event stood as a testament to the State’s commitment to honouring film artistry.
Among the night’s biggest highlights was actress Pragya Jaiswal, who received two prestigious honours for her performances in Kanche and Akhanda. Both films were recognized as the second-best films of the year, bringing immense pride to the actress.
Sharing her excitement, Pragya said, “It’s truly one of the most credible and prestigious recognitions an actor can receive. My debut film Kanche and Akhanda being honoured together is overwhelming. Kanche holds a special place in my heart—it won a National Award, a State Award, and I received the Best Debut Award for it. When your first film receives such recognition, it validates all your hard work. And now, receiving this honour from the Chief Minister of Telangana feels even more special.”
Pragya also revealed how thrilled her parents were. “My parents have always been proud, but this particular award had them extra elated. It’s such a proud and humbling moment for our entire family.”
Reflecting on her journey, she credited her Kanche director Krish Jagarlamudi for a valuable lesson. “During Kanche, I already knew the film was going to be very special. It’s rare to feel that so early in your career. Almost a decade later, being recognized for it proves that feeling right. Krish once told me, ‘Epic or nothing’—and those words have stayed with me. Even today, I think of them before signing any film or role. That mindset shaped my journey.”
With the success of her recent film Daaku Maharaj, Pragya’s career continues to shine, backed by a foundation built on impactful performances and powerful cinema.

Netflix Renegotiates Thug Life Deal After Box Office Failure

During the COVID era, OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime emerged as game changers for the Indian entertainment industry, offering lucrative deals to filmmakers. These platforms paid massive sums to acquire digital rights, providing a financial cushion to producers amid uncertain theatrical prospects. However, that golden phase seems to be fading fast.
In recent times, the OTT landscape has witnessed a noticeable downturn. With changing audience behavior and theatrical releases regaining momentum, major platforms are now approaching deals with caution. In fact, they’ve begun renegotiating terms even after a film’s release—something unheard of during OTT’s peak years.
A prime example of this shift is the case of Thug Life, the high-profile collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam. Following its underwhelming performance at the box office, reports suggest that Netflix, which had originally secured the film’s digital rights, is now renegotiating the agreement. The platform is reportedly seeking to slash the payout by as much as 30%, citing the film’s lack of appeal to OTT audiences due to its theatrical failure.
This development has raised concerns across the industry. If this trend continues, it could soon affect Tollywood, which has so far enjoyed strong support from OTT platforms thanks to its consistent box office hits. Telugu filmmakers are currently commanding premium deals, but poor-performing films in the future may face similar renegotiation hurdles.
With streaming giants becoming more calculative in their investments, the message is clear: the days of OTT platforms absorbing theatrical losses are over. Going forward, producers may need to focus more on quality and audience connect to ensure financial stability both in theatres and online.
