Khaidi No 150 – Movie Review and Rating

Share

Beginning with Khaidi in 1983, Megastar Chiranjeevi went on to rule Tollywood for more than two decades until he plunged into full-time politics in 2008 and quit acting. Nearly a decade later, the star is back to the medium which had endeared himself to the people in the first place-movies.

Khaidi No 150 which has been in the news for over a year has hit the silver screens today. Can Chiranjeevi reclaim his glory and position with this movie?

Does he have the same charisma and screen presence? Read on to find out how good Chiru is in the film and how well this movie, remade from Tamil blockbuster Kaththi has shaped up.

Story:
Farmers of a remote village in Anantpur district are fighting a corporate company that is trying to grab their lands believed to contain untapped water. Supporting them in their struggle is Shankar (Chiranjeevi) an idealist, who along with a few villagers, comes to Hyderabad to bring the issue of the struggle to the notice of the media and the judiciary.

On other hand, is a thief called Kaththi Seenu (Chiranjeevi) who has escaped from jail.  Kaththi Seenu is witness to a shootout and is surprised to find the injured person who is none other than Shankar look exactly like him.

Kaththi Seenu gets Shankar admitted to a hospital and decides to impersonate Shankar to escape from the police. He lands in the place where Shankar was residing with his villagers. Over time, he realizes who Shankar really is and the noble cause for which he had been fighting.  Kaththi Seenu now takes up the war to bring justice to the farmers.

Does he achieve Shankar’s goal? What tricks does he play to realize his objective? You have to watch the film to get the answer.

Artistes’ Performances:
Despite a long gap, Chiranjeevi is absolutely at home in his performance. Acting-wise, he is still superb as he was in the past. He has pulled off both the roles convincingly. His performance is especially good while delivering the emotional speeches.

Chiranjeevi has worked hard to look young, his dances are good. He has not done any heavy-duty steps but pulled off the dance moves gracefully. However, he seemed odd in action sequences, which is why all fight scenes failed to make any impact. But given his age, he has done a commendable job in the dance and fight sequences.

Kajal Agarwal is there in the movie only for songs. Comedy by Ali, Brahmanandam, Raghu Babu and Posani is not effective although they managed to induce the occasional laugh.

Tarun Arora as the villain is okay. Lakshmi Rai as item girl and Ram Charan in a cameo appearance added glitz to the movie.

Technical Excellence:
Producer Ram Charan has provided best technicians to his dad’s comeback movie. Popular cinematographer Rathnavelu shot the film in a rich manner and he also made Chiru look young in many frames.

The production quality is also top-class. Director Vinayak has shot the film in grand way. Music by Devi Sri Prasad is foot-tapping, the songs have become quite popular prior to the release and the songs are equally good on screen. In fact, they appear more effective on screen due to picturisation, locations and Chiru’s dances.

Background score is effective too with the ‘Neeru Neeru’ theme. Some dialogues are impressive, while some are old-style preachy ones.

Highlights:

  • Chiranjeevi
  • Second half
  • Devi Sri Prasad’s peppy songs
  • Cinematography

Drawbacks:

  • Outdated scenes
  • Uneven pace

Analysis:
Unlike director Murugadoss’s  other movies, Kaththi doesn’t boast of a different kind of story or screenplay. In fact, this story is as old as Chiru’s career. But the movie is packaged with right masala moments.

Director Vinayak who successfully remade Murgudoss’s earlier film Ramana as Tagore with Chiranjeevi a decade ago, has followed the same formula. He has not changed much of the original screenplay of the Tamil version but he has added Brahmanandam’s character and an item song.

Like in the Tamil version, the first half lacks grip, it has many loose ends. Nevertheless, the film packs punch with many “mass” moments in the second half. When an entire village is not getting media’s attention despite their protests, Chiranjeevi blocks a pipeline that takes water to Hyderabad. The way this is narrated is interesting. Soon after this, he gives a fiery speech about farmers and their issues which also connects well. These two lengthy episodes in the second half, pre-interval sequences have made a lot of difference to an otherwise regular masala movie. Still, the movie doesn’t overcome its flaws in the script.

In the first half, the confrontation of villain and hero, the flashback episode of Shankar are convincingly told. Moreover, Chiranjeevi has looked in form despite long gap. For mega fans, this is what matters. Clever use of “Neeru Neeru” as background theme music has helped the movie carry the mood forward. When Chiru questions about ‘runa maafi’ (waiver of loans for farmers), it rings well with the audiences given the political issue in AP. There are subtle political statements too.

One clever thing director Vinayak does is he has not put many romantic scenes between Chiranjeevi and Kajal Agarwal. He has used her only for songs.

Chiru coming back in form is one big asset, and the director sticking to the content in the second half has helped a lot. But on the downside, many scenes involving Chiru, Ali and Brahmanandam seem out of place with the current trend. Even the dialogues mouthed by Chiru in those scenes are outdated.

The villain in the movie is a lame duck. The confrontational scenes between hero and villain don’t have enough fizz. There are many flaws in the story too and the climax is not convincing at all.  Also, megastar looks overweight in the beginning scenes. There is lot of difference in his looks throughout the film.

Over all, “Khaidi No 150” is a film that has some nice mass moments and has dealt on a topical issue with cliched script. It is Chiru’s act that works rather than the content of the movie.

Bottom-line: New Innings!

US Premieres: Mad Rush For Khaidi, Started Breaking Records

Ending the long-wait, Megastar Chiranjeevi’s comeback film Khaidi No:150 is finally in theaters from today. Surprisingly, the action drama, which’s a remake of Tamil film Kaththi, is making a remarkable debut through US premiers.

Inching towards 1 million mark through premiers, the initial figures suggest Khaidi No:150 has effortlessly crossed the half million mark and grossed $600K from 92 locations even before the screenings have commenced. With that, Chiru’s film takes third place while the the top 2 being Baahubali – $1470 and Sardaar Gabbar Singh – $643K.

Going by the trends, Megastar’s 150th film is likely to set a new benchmark in overseas box-office, by finishing premieres with $1 million and remains to be seen whether it will smash the Baahubali record too. Evidently, this phenomenal run says Megastar Chiranjeevi continues to dominate box-office in 2017, even after 9 nine years of gap.

With two more films, still due for release, including the highly anticipated Gautami Putra Satakarni starring Nandamuri Balakrishna and Shatamanam Bhavati featuring Sharwanand in next two days, Khaidi No:150 is set to see tight competition in the following days.

No Good or Bad Relations With RGV: Chiranjeevi

chiru

Even as Ram Gopal Varma attacking Naga Babu on Twitter over the latter’s acerbic comments against him, Chiranjeevi takes this whole controversy lightly.

“Personally I don’t feel it is necessary to respond to the comments made on social media by Ram Gopal Varma or other persons”, Megastar Chiranjeevi reacted on this issue.

He further elaborated on this issue. He said: “My family members are hurt with Ram Gopal Varma constantly targeting us and ridiculing us for no fault. By nature Nagababu is emotional person and so he responded on the stage for the comments made by RGV. The tone of Nagababu may not be right but there is no wrong in reacting to the targeted mudslinging.”

Long back, Ram Gopal Varma directed a movie with Chiranjeevi as hero but the film didn’t see the light of the day. Was it the reason why RGV is targeting Chiru and his family? Megastar replies,” I don’t think so. Actually I don’t know the reason.”

Why Chiranjeevi and Ram Gopal Varm’s film dropped off? “In the case of our film, it was Ram Gopal Varm who walked away from the film after canning a song and a scene. He said Sanjay Dutt came out from prison and he had to make a movie with Sanjay Dutt and walked out from our film. Then he made Daud,” Chiranjeevi explained.

How are the relations between Chiranjeevi and Ram Gopal Varma now? He promptly replied, “Neither good nor bad.”

I Cannot Spoil Krish Dream: Gnana Sekhar

Cinematography is a creative film making department responsible for artistic and technical decisions related to image.

For historical and war based films, this department obviously becomes more important. Cameraman Gnana Sekhar has been an inseparable part of director Krish’s team from Vedam till Gautamiputra Satakarni.

In an exclusive chat with Greatandhra, the awesome technician shared his views on Satakarni.

From 2009:
Through one of my editor friend, I met Krish for Vedam and our journey continued till date for GPSK. I am also working for his next project.

Visuals for GPSK:
I am basically a painter by passion. I get more animated when discuss on history and wars. So, GPSK is a special project for me because I shot extensive war episodes for the first time unlike World War scenes in Kanche.

I follow Bhagavadgita a lot and Kurukshetra battle is already in my imaginations. Those chariots, horses, weapons, soldiers; everything was in my subconscious mind while preparing for GPSK. I loved to capture them in real in terms of Satavahana history.

Involvement into Project:
Krish makes sure that we are notified with every nuke and corner of the story. He explains the story in depth with extensive detailing. This narration makes us well prepared early on before going on production mode. After digesting the script and characters, any cameraman cannot go in spoiling a director’s dream. Every scene gets strongly recorded in brain. Going on production is like attending an exam with every chapter thoroughly prepared.

Later, Krish explains us only the scene for that particular day and remaining else easily comes into our execution like lighting, framing and all technicalities. I never had conflict of thought with Krish during execution which explains the healthy relationship between us.

Balakrishna:
He is a treasure of knowledge. Balayya garu made our work simple and easy with his dedication and involvement. He used to be punctual on sets in advance before our attendance.

Locations and Weather:
Countries like Morocco have inconsistent weather conditions. There’s dust, cold winds, rains and many real time issues. That’s actually the challenge and we overcame it as a team.

Color Schemes:
Satakarni story dates back to early Anno Domini. I studied about the rock structures, cultures of those times before composing the color scheme and resolution. From costumes to artists foot wear, there is a color evolution which is not too bright and modern used in filming.

You can find a unique tone of natural colors which take audience to that Satakarni world offering a periodic and old feel.

War Episodes:
The war field patterns designed for GPSK are unique and indigenous and had no parallels. Although I cannot categorize them but for sure a viewer can feel the depth in visuals and sound like horses running at100-150 kms/hr speed and for a technician, this is uncontrollable.

GPSK is gives a different war perspective.
All the rumors circulated on GPSK battle field scenes lifted from Bajirao Mastani are fake and baseless. As a cameraman, it hurts when all our efforts are debased because the time and energy we put into making aren’t respected.

Dediation at GPSK:
For proper nine months we had no other commitments. From morning 7am to evening 6pm, eleven hours a day we had no thoughts except Satakarni. I cannot compare with any other war films but for sure we achieved what we wanted in a given time period. Extreme dedication and no time wastage, we fought like soldiers for GPSK. Post production is other creative department which took ample time.

Direction Offers:
I am very happy with cameraman job. No plans to take up direction.

GPSK USP:
This movie is a complete package. Story is special, entire 135 minutes there will be visual beauty on screen. GPSK gives a pleasant experience, keeps you engaged and easily falls into your comfort zone.

And the competent film technician (DFT) from Hyderabad, Gnana Sekhar signs off.

Will Khaidi No 150 Cross Half Million Dollars?

Share

chiru

The turn is very impressive for “Khaidi No 150” at sales for premiere shows in North America. The movie already registered $121k from early morning sales and it will increase further.

By this trend, the film may go past the half million dollars mark with the premiere shows. As this is Chiranjeevi’s comeback movie, the sales are very superb and the distributors are happy with the sales so far.

Mega fans are showing so much interest in the film and the buzz and hype around it is also helping it in big way. Directed by V V Vinayak, “Khaidi No 150” is remake of Tamil blockbuster “Kaththi”.

Pic Talk: Director Kisses Heroine On Awards Red Carpet

Bollywood beautiful actress Sonam Kapoor was on the red carpet posing for the shutterbugs while director Karan Johar walked and gave a kiss on her cheek. Though looked frenzy for a second, it is no surprise, they have that great bond.

This happened at the Pre Awards party of Filmfare where the Bollywood film fraternity gathered at one place in their best attires of suits and figure hugging dresses from the most popular fashion designers. While many actresses looked stunning to keep us blink-free, this kiss of Sonam and Karan Johar garnered more attention.

Ram Charan became the first Tollywood star to get invitation from Facebook India to speak at their office.

Ram Charan today visited the India Headquarters of social media giant Facebook in Hyderabad. Earlier Tamil superstar Vijay got this honour among South Indian stars.

Ram Charan who turned producer with his dad Chiranjeevi’s comeback movie ‘Khaidi No 150’ spoke at length about the movie, his career and shared many funny incidents about his life with the employees of Facebook.

Why Eenadu Missed Chiru Cover Story?

Share

chiru

Sunday magazine of Ramoji Rao’s Eenadu newspaper carried special cover story on Nandamuri Balakrishna’s 100th film “Gauthamiputra Satakarni” while missing a similar story on Chiranjeevi who has came up with his 150th movie.

This partiality has sparked a row. Eenadu Sunday magazine also carried similar special cover story about “Baahubali” before the release because it was the costliest Telugu film and was made with total finance help from Ramoji Rao.

Luckily for Eenadu, the film also went on to become one of India’s all-time biggest hits and the movie seemed justified.

But the same newspaper coming up with a similar story on “Gauthamiputra Satakarni”, that was more of paid promotional article than informative news feature has led to several interpretations.

When both senior stars Chiranjeevi and Nandamuri Balakrishna are releasing their milestone movies of their career, ideal option is to feature both of them on cover page and write about those movies. But missing one and carrying the other is seen in the angle of “caste”.

Eendu editorial staff says they carried the cover story about “Gauthamiputra Satakarni” since the film is about the first emperor of Telugu land who ruled from Amaravathi, not because of Balakrishna. But some say this argument doesn’t hold water.

Producer Dil Raju Under Tension

Share

dil

Producer Dil Raju is said to be worrying that his film is not getting right kind of buzz or promotion.

As everyone is talking about “Gauthamiputra Satakarni” and “Khaidi No 150”, there is no buzz at all about his production “Shatamanam Bhavati” that is releasing on 14th January.

Tradition is that when two big movies release during Sankranthi time, one or two small movies also get space.

Last year too, Sharwanand competed with his movie “Express Raja” with big stars like NTR, Balakrishna and Nagarjuna and got hit. Dil Raju is releasing this movie amidst two big projects now for this reason only.

But “Express Raja” sustained due to heavy promotions. On the other hand, “Shatamanam Bhavathi” has failed to create any hype or buzz around the film despite holding some big event. He needs to up the promotions or the film would be sandwiched between these two big projects.

Naidu Started Eating Fish!

What is the daily menu of Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu?

This might be the doubt somebody gets, after hearing to the comment of actress-producer Manchu Lakshmi about the fitness and handsomeness of Naidu. And Naidu himself has revealed his daily menu.

“Every morning, I take millet rice, including ragi and jowar. Besides, I eat only egg white. In the afternoon, I eat just a couple of fruits, besides the same morning meal. In the night, I take just boiled vegetables, besides a glass of milk. Of late, I started taking coffee a couple of times a day,” he said.

And Naidu also revealed his changed diet in the recent past. “Of late, I have started taking non-vegetarian food – that is fish, after doctors advised me to eat it. They told me that eating fish would sharpen brain. You too can follow it,” he said.

The TDP president also had a piece of advice for the people. “Your tongue is your enemy. If you control your tongue, you will be healthy and cheerful,” he added.

What’s happening in Gudiwada? After Gagan Mahal theatre raising a curious controversy over issuing the permissions for re-opening after renovation, here comes one more news with a section of Junior NTR Fans erecting a flexi wishing Chiranjeevi and his ‘Khaidi No 150’ for a grand success in same Gudivada town.

Given the wide rift between Junior NTR and Balayya Babu, the picture you see above isn’t in good health when Nandamuri Fans are really un-united. Hope, such kind of flexi publicity do not turn hostile.

Will Anasuya Voice Spoil the feel of Satakarni ?

Share

anasuya

Popular television anchor and film actress Anasuya has revealed that director Krish has personally asked her to dub for a character in his Gautamiputra Satakarni and she obliged. Has Krish taken a risk by roping in Anasuya?

Indo-Dutch model turned actress Farah Karimi (Aravind Swamy’s girlfriend in ‘Dhruva’) has played the key character of a Greek warrior queen in GPS. Visuals of Farah riding the horse in battle field and seducing Satakarni aka Balayya in another scene were shown in the trailer. Anasuya has dubbed for her character.

The role required a voice with foreign accent having vague Telugu dialect. It is not sure how Krish selected a fluent Telugu speaking Anasuya to do the job. Moreover, this beautiful lady’s raw voice echoes in the homes of people of Telugu states on a daily basis and many are familiar with it. Does her voice look convincing for a foreign lady?

Being a perfectionist and acclaimed filmmaker, Krish must have explained Anasuya how he wants her voice modulated before letting her dub. However, it indeed was a bold and surprising decision from Krish.

Farah will have 15 minutes of screen time, let’s hope Anasuya’s not-so convincing dubbing doesn’t spoil the proceedings.

GPS Effect: Guna Letter to AP Govt. for RD Tax Exemption

Passionate filmmaker Gunasekhar’s historical magnum opus collected the highest ever share among the historical entertainers till date. Yet, the film stood as just an above grosser at the box office due to extravagance in its investment. Uncompromising attitude of Gunasekhar in making the film is said to be the reason for the movie’s high budget.

The director-producer applied for tax exemption of his film to AP and Telangana governments. As ‘Rudhramevi’, then empress ruled South India, both the governments of Telugu states were expected to exempt the entertainment tax for the film.

Telangana government moved generously and exempted the tax for the film. Unfortunately, the AP government ignored the appeal of Gunasekhar. In fact, ‘Rudhramadevi’ was said to have ruled even Amaravati according to historians and Markapuram Sashanam revealed the same.

In contrast, the AP government didn’t hesitate announcing the tax exemption to Basava Rama Taraka Puthra Balakrishna’s historical film ‘Gauthamiputra Satakarni’. As Balakrishna being bawa of CBN, the AP government exempted tax for GPS,” opined some observers. In the meanwhile, Gunasekhar wrote a letter to the AP government seeking entertainment tax for his film. This is a wise move by the director-producer and the AP government should do the favour to the filmmaker who shelled in crores of rupees on the project.

Lokesh Caught Misusing AP CM's Twitter For Satakarni?

In what can be a major blunder, a tweet from AP CM Chandrababu Naidu’s official twitter handle reportedly tweeted about Balakrishna’s Gautamiputra Satakarni.

This has come as a huge shock as already AP state government is under fire for favouritism over issuing tax exemption to Balayya’s 100th film.

The official twitter handle of Andhra Pradesh CM tweeted reportedly tweeted, “Mesmerised by #Balayya mavayya’s inspiring performance. Contribution of other artists in #GautamiPutraSatakarni deserves special mention.

This was later reportedly deleted and the same was tweeted from Nara Lokesh’s personal twitter handle.

Anasuya: Bagged GPSK, Lost Khaidi 150

Jabardast TV anchor and hot shot celebrity in cinema circles Anasuya Bharadwaj is fortunately making decent moves in film industry. At the cost of keeping her small screen career at bay, she bagged ‘Kshanam’ and ‘Soggade Chinni Nayana’ turned out to be glorious hits last year.

Latest we heard is Anasuya also bagged an offer to dub her voice for Indo Greek warrior queen character played by Farah Karimi in ‘Gauthami Puthra Satakarni’ which comes at a crucial story turning point.

‘Though, I take it as privilege in becoming a tiny part of such huge project like GPSK, at the same time I feel bad missing ‘Khaidi No 150.’ Yes, I was offered the job of anchoring ‘Khaidi No 150’ pre release event at Haailand Ground. Due to postponement of event from Jan 4th to 7th, I could not manage my call sheets because on same day I had Jabardast shooting.

As Naga Babu and a couple of main team members from Jabardast participated in pre release event, my presence at Jabardast shoot was mandatory. Finally, I lost the opportunity of becoming a part of ‘Khaidi No 150’ yet I wish both these films become blockbusters,’ said Anasuya.

Politics & Films – No Permanent Foes!

roja

Time again, actress cum politician Roja proved that there are no permanent friends and foes in politics and glamour industry. An open fact to all of us that, Chiranjeevi and Roja is a super hit pair on big screens. But when both of them entered into politics fighting on different agendas from two rival parties, obviously none spared the other.

There are umpteen instances when Roja criticized Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam and Congress. Here’s not the end of story because Roja interviewed Mega Star on the occasion of is Mega Comeback with 150th film ‘Khaidi No 150’ for Sakshi TV owned by YSRCP leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Needless to say, Roja works for the same party. It wasn’t shocking to see her posing besides Chiranjeevi with whole lot of smiles. Off the screen and on the screen, our artists are real artists. Meanwhile, Roja also gels well with Mega brother Naga Babu on super hit comedy show Jabardast.

Everyone is surprised about the quality of the trailer and wondered how director Krish managed it in around 80 working days.

Krish interacted with media this morning and revealed how Rajamouli gave two golden advices to him which helped the movie immensely. Rajamouli asked Krish to keep the Graphics as less as possible in the film and also asked him to get the perfect sound.

Hema Malini Uninterested @ Rajamatha!

Dream Girl Hema Malini played an important and powerful character of Gauthami Balasri in upcoming historical flick ‘Gauthami Puthra Satakarni’ starring Nandamuri Balakrishna in his milestone 100th.  After watching Ramya Krishna’s ferocity as Rajamatha in ‘Bahubali,’ definitely writers will have their share of inspirations when dealing similar kind of characterizations.

According to film buzz, Hema Malini’s Rajamatha Gauthami Balasri is more powerful than Shivagami Devi. When director Krish approached Hema Malini requesting for an appointment to narrate the script, she hasn’t shown any sort of interest because of her poor Telugu language skills.

‘After lot many trials, finally I got her appointment. Once I began to elaborate the strength and robustness in Gauthami Balasri role, she instantly fell for it. After 45 minutes discussion, Hema Malini garu immediately signed the project and became a part of my further research. She gathered loads of information from history which helped me in screenplay,’ said Krish.
