India’s Swift Humanitarian Aid to Myanmar After Devastating Earthquake
On March 28, a powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, registering a magnitude of 7.7, causing widespread devastation and significant loss of life. As of the latest official reports, the disaster has claimed 3,759 lives, with 5,107 individuals injured, and 114 people still missing. In the wake of this tragedy, Myanmar has experienced 154 aftershocks, ranging from 2.8 to 7.5 in magnitude, complicating relief efforts and adding to the urgency for international assistance.
In response to the crisis, India quickly mobilized resources under Operation Brahma, a comprehensive relief initiative designed to provide humanitarian aid, medical support, and disaster relief to the affected region. As the first responder, India has demonstrated unwavering solidarity with the people of Myanmar during this challenging time.
As part of the operation, India delivered over 750 metric tons of relief supplies, including essential medicines, food grains, ready-to-eat meals, tents, blankets, generators, and portable surgical shelters. Additionally, an 80-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team specializing in heavy urban search and rescue (SAR) operations and a 127-member Indian Army field hospital team were deployed to assist with the recovery efforts. Water sanitation and hygiene services, along with prefabricated office and residential structures, were also sent to support the affected communities.
On April 17, Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur officially handed over additional relief material to Myanmar’s Mandalay Chief Minister Myo Aung. This consignment included a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water plant, gensets, rice, noodles, cooking oil, sugar, dal, salt, blankets, and medicines, aimed at meeting the immediate needs of the affected populations in Mandalay and Sagaing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his condolences over the loss, conveyed India’s commitment to standing by Myanmar in this difficult time. He extended India’s support directly to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council, reaffirming India’s readiness to continue providing aid and resources as needed. During the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on April 4, Prime Minister Modi and Senior General Hlaing discussed the ongoing relief efforts, with the Myanmar leader expressing his gratitude for India’s swift and comprehensive support.
