Trump hits back at critics in the UK

Donald Trump has hit back against U.K. critics of his stand against Islam, saying Britain had “a massive Muslim problem”. The leading Republican presidential contender, who prompted outrage around the world on Monday by calling for Muslims to be barred from entering the U.S. following the San Bernardino shooting, also praised controversial British commentator Katie Hopkins after she supported his position in an interview on Fox News.

Political backlash “The politicians of the U.K. should watch Katie Hopkins… many people in the U.K. agree with me,” Mr. Trump tweeted. In another tweet, he said: “The United Kingdom is trying hard to disguise their massive Muslim problem. Everybody is wise to what is happening, very sad! Be honest.” On Wednesday, Mr. Trump attracted a political backlash in Britain when he claimed there were parts of London so radicalised that police officers feared for their lives. The comments were rejected by Downing Street, which said they were “totally inaccurate”, and the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who said they were “utter nonsense”.

The Scottish government has dropped Mr. Trump from his role as a business ambassador, and Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen has stripped him of his honorary degree. On Thursday, Ms. Hopkins used an appearance on Fox to highlight a petition signed by more than 300,000 people calling for Mr. Trump be banned from Britain following his inflammatory speech in South Carolina. She said: “A quarter of the population here in the U.K. are right behind Donald Trump.” The petition become the most popular ever campaign on the U.K. government’s website on Thursday.

Blair says he urged Gaddafi to leave Libya in 2011

BLAIR_GADDAFI_jpg_2653662f

Tony Blair telephoned Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and tried to persuade him to leave Libya as the Arab Spring erupted in February 2011, the former British Prime Minister revealed on Friday. Mr. Blair said he was not trying to “save” the Libyan dictator but “to get him out of the situation so that a peaceful transition could take place.” Acted as a private individual Mr. Blair said he’d acted as a private individual and spoke to Gaddafi “two or three” times over a 24-hour period. He said it soon became clear Gaddafi would not leave. Mr. Blair, Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007, was instrumental in ending Gaddafi’s international isolation in return for Libya abandoning its nuclear and chemical arms programmes.

He has faced criticism for his rapprochement efforts with the oil-rich state, which included a 2004 meeting in Gaddafi’s desert tent. Under Prime Minister David Cameron, the U.K. participated in a NATO-led 2011 military intervention that led to Gaddafi’s ouster and his death at the hands of rebel fighters. Now in the throes of chaos Libya has since descended into chaos, with rival militias battling for control and extremists linked to the Islamic State (IS) group gaining strength.

Mr. Blair told Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee that without the earlier deal with Gaddafi, there was a risk that the IS in Libya would now have access to chemical weapons. “If we had still had the residue of that chemical weapons program in Libya today, given the state of Libya today and given the presence of ISIS there, it would have constituted a real risk, even today,” he said. Iraq war decision still unpopular Mr. Blair, whose decision to join the 2003 invasion of Iraq remains deeply unpopular in Britain, would not criticise Mr. Cameron for intervening in Libya, despite the messy outcome. He said it would not necessarily have been better if “Gaddafi tried to cling on to power and others tried to remove him.” “You can look at Syria today where we didn’t intervene, by the way, and say that is even worse,” Mr. Blair said.
