Share

Young Rebel Star Prabhas’ 2012 film, Rebel was dubbed in to Malayalam and had a good release in Kerala this morning. The movie surprisingly got very good openings there today. The super success of Baahubali and the presence of Baahubali pair in this dubbed film, Prabhas and Tamannah helped the movie to attract audience to the theaters.

The Tamil version of the film also released today but the openings are not that great as the state is battered by the recent floods. Post the super success of Baahubali, Prabhas is a popular face across the nation. As a result there is a big demand for the dubbing rights of his old movies. They are also being paid well at the box office of other states.

Kim says N. Korea has hydrogen bomb

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un appeared on Thursday to claim his country has developed a hydrogen bomb, a step up from the less powerful atomic bomb, but outside experts were sceptical. Mr. Kim made the comments as he toured the Phyongchon Revolutionary Site, which marks the feats of his father who died in 2011 and his grandfather, state founder and eternal president, Kim Il Sung, the official KCNA news agency said.

The work of Kim Il Sung “turned the DPRK into a powerful nuclear weapons state ready to detonate a self-reliant A-bomb and H-bomb to reliably defend its sovereignty and the dignity of the nation,” KCNA quoted Kim Jong Un as saying. DPRK are the initials of the isolated North’s official name—the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. A hydrogen bomb, also known as a thermonuclear bomb, uses more advanced technology to produce a significantly more powerful blast than an atomic bomb.

North Korea conducted underground tests to set off nuclear devices in 2006, 2009 and 2013, for which it has been subject to U.N. Security Council sanctions banning trade and financing activities that aid its weapons programme. An official at South Korea’s intelligence agency told Yonhap news agency there was no evidence that the North had hydrogen bomb capacity, and believed Mr. Kim was speaking rhetorically.

Draft Paris agreement disappoints civil society

Share

Climate_protest_2653327f

With world leaders committing to an ambitious Paris deal during the first week of the UN climate change summit, hopes were running high that the concerns of communities suffering the worst impacts of climate change would be addressed in the agreement. However, as the talks conclude and a draft of the agreement to be adopted later this week was released on December 9, gaps between the promises made and what the fine print of the document lays out began to appear, with civil society organisations and people’s movements opposing the dilution of Article 2 of the agreement, which lays down the purpose of the agreement. Annabella Rosemberg of the International Trade Union Confederation, who is attending the summit as an Observer on behalf of ITUC, said that the wordings of the draft agreement prepared in mid-October in Bonn, had included the phrase ‘just transition of the workforce and the creation of decent work’ in Article 2 but now this had been moved to the preamble of the agreement, which diluted the demands of the trade unions.

Explaining the difference, Ms. Rosemberg said that having the rights of the workforce and labourers recognised in the operational part of the text, means that the parties signing on the agreement have a responsibility to act on its basis, however moving these concerns to the preamble, keeps it outside the purview of the operational text, rendering such concerns only a tokenistic recognition, and failing to fix responsibility. “Whatever world leaders may talk about, at the end of the day what matters is the fine print of the agreement itself and what it offers us,” she said. Expressing concern that climate change had resulted in loss of jobs for millions in several sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, transportation, she said, “A Paris deal without ambition, justice and rights is a deal for the one percent.” Similarly, right to health, rights of indigenous people, of migrants, of children, had all been brought forward to the preamble, and remain within brackets, which means, it had not been agreed upon yet, and none of these concerns figure in Article 2 that defines the purpose of the agreement. Deborah Parker, a representative of the Lhaq’temish, The Lummi People, a Native American tribe in Washington district in U.S., said that indigenous communities worldwide were suffering from the impacts of the environmental crisis unleashed by climate change and fossil fuel extraction, and removing their concerns from the operational part of the agreement would do nothing to protect them.

“I remember going huckleberry picking and clam digging with my grandmother in Washington, but environmental pollution has ensured I cannot do the same things with my daughter anymore. I was hoping the Paris agreement would recognise the rights of indigenous people like us to carry on with our native lifestyles, but unfortunately it doesn’t.” The portions on gender rights are also out of Article 2. “If the concerns of women who are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change are not part of the main agreement what is purpose of having a climate deal? How are you going to address the needs of those who really need a solution?” asked Aditi Chhadha Kapoor, Director – Policy Advocacy and Partnerships with Alternative Futures in India. She said that even in the clauses that discuss adaptation, women are not recognised as worthy of climate finance. The agreement continues to undermine progress on food security as well, noted Teresa Anderson, climate change policy adviser with Action Aid International. “While food security has a mention in Article 2 of the agreement, the language of the draft shows no commitment towards protecting the food security of people from the impacts of climate change so far as mitigation is concerned,” she said.

Harjeet Singh, global lead on climate change, Action Aid India, said that in a country like India, food security concerns are looming large with India experiencing a drought for the second consecutive year. Diluting the operational text of the agreement, such that these concerns aren’t recognised explicitly betrays any meaningful commitment towards those impacted by climate change, he said. “The big fight right now is between the U.S.-led umbrella group and others bloc of developing and less developed nations, who are at the receiving end of the climate change impact,” he noted, adding, “Unless the heads of states stick their heads out nothing will happen and unfortunately here nobody is looking beyond their own national interest.”

Rajinikanth’s style statements ‘Trendsetting’!

Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth, who turns 65 on Saturday, has long since been synonymous with style. From the way he flips his cigarette to his signature walk, the man is known for his inimitable and unparalleled style in his movies. His style statements, which have turned trendsetters over the years, are a fashion school in their own right.

* Flipping cigarette: In Indian cinema, nobody can flip a cigarette to his lips like Rajinikanth and it remains his most elusive trick ever because he has constantly reinvented it. From tossing a cigarette into his mouth from a fair distance to rolling it in the air and lighting it with a revolver, or even taking a burning cigarette into his mouth, and taking it back out. Although the star has stopped endorsing smoking on screen, his fans wait with bated breath to see him light a cigarette in films, even if it means for one last time.

* The walk: In Rajinikanth’s walk, you find pride and confidence of a man who rose to super-stardom against all odds. While the star walks a tad faster than people usually do, it has never been an issue for filmmakers who captured it in slow motion on several occasions in his films, much to the delight of his fans.

* Wearing goggles: Rajinikanth likes the concept of flipping. Be it a cigarette, a jacket, or even the stole that rests on his shoulder; he doesn’t use them without a flip. While many may consider his way of using a goggle peculiar – flipping it from elbow level and rolling it a few times before actually wearing it, the style was still a hit among youngsters. It was so popular that even children, especially in the age group of 5 to 10, imitated it with likable innocence.

* Hairstyle: It’s quite possible that the star never required a comb, because he’d mostly flip his hair with his own hands with panache. Rajinikanth’s hairstyle had striking similarity with a lion’s mane and it could also be one of the reasons why it was never altered in his films.

* The namaskar: When people do namaskar to greet others, their palms usually come together before the face or chest, but it goes sideways for Rajinikanth. It usually goes towards the right or left side of his chin. While the actor never did it on purpose, yet people started imitating it.

* The salute: There’s a flip in his salute, too. He flips his hand in a circular motion and stops at forehead to salute. Rajinikanth popularized it in his film “Padayappa” and although he never used it again in his career, people still remember it as one of his most stylish gestures.

The makers of the yet-untitled Telugu redux of Malayalam blockbuster “Premam”, which went on floors last week, are yet to finalize the third leading lady.

“So far only Anupama Parameswaran and Shruti Haasan have been confirmed and they’ve already started shooting. The makers are in talks with Aisha Sharma to play the third heroine, but nothing has been finalized yet,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS.

Contrary to the rumours, Regina Cassandra is not part of the project. “Regina was initially considered but was never approached. Aisha is still under consideration and only if she’s not signed, will anyone else be even considered,” the source.

Naga Chaitanya plays the lead in the film, which is being directed by Chandoo Mondeti. While Shruti plays a lecturer, Anupama will be seen as a school student. This coming-of-age drama, which traces three stages in the life of its protagonist over a decade, is being produced by S. Radha Krishna.

Star music director Devi Sri Prasad had a fantastic year so far. With the year coming to an end, one can safely say that DSP dominated Tollywood this year. Now, he received a gift from Apple iTunes.

Apple iTunes releases the best album every year in each language. This year it awarded ‘S/o Satyamurty’ as the best album in Telugu.

This is really great because these awards from Apple are famous and are lauded for their honesty. Not only this but he scored many hits this year with ‘Srimanthudu’, and ‘Kumari 21F’. Hope that he continues this streak next year too and also become successful as a hero.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was acquitted of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case by the Bombay High Court. Whilst Bollywood celebs, Salman fans and several welcomed the court’s verdict, others are opposing. Public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat expressed shock over the verdict stating he will respond only after reading the verdict copy completely. Criminal lawyer Abha Singh responded, “With this judgment, common man’s belief over court has gone.”

After the court delivered its decision, Salman Khan is trolled on the social media and Internet giant Google has been inadvertently drawn into the discussion online because of its self-driving car project which it says will be road tested and available to the public by 2020. ‘Google can just retire its ambitious project. Salman Khan invented the driverless car 13 years ago,’ a funny post published on Twitter.

Here are other amusing tweets:

Very Clever boy ‘Raj Tarun’ !

raj tharun1449812298

Young talent Raj Tarun is now on Cloud Nine with hat-trick hits. This actor is now making films at a very fast pace. Recently, he released the trailer of his upcoming film ‘Seetamma Andaalu-Ramayya Sitralu’ and planning it to release it by the end of January. The interesting thing is his films are titled by a hit numbers of other films.

His first film was titled ‘Uyyala Jampala’ which was a common childhood song which is very familiar. Then he named his 2nd film as ‘Cinema Choopista Maava’ which is a super hit song from Allu Arjun’s ‘Race Gurram’. Then his third film was an exception. Now his next film is titled by taking a line from the old film ‘Shuba Sankalpam’.

In this way, Raj Tarun is naming his films after super hit songs. This helps in bringing publicity for the film as it is already a familiar word and the people are used to it. Now he signed another two films which will be started soon and we have to see whether he follows the same pattern of naming song lyrics as titles or not.
