A 25-year-old unsolved killing of an Indian schoolteacher who worked at a gas station seems to have been cracked with the Canadian police arresting a man and charging him with the murder. Surinder Singh Parmar, who was a teacher in India and held a PhD in history, was found stabbed to death on November 19, 1990, inside a men’s washroom of the Penny Gas Bar in Toronto. The suspect, Rupert Richards, now 61, was arrested on Monday from his home in Toronto, police said on Tuesday. Richards was “quite surprised” to learn that he has been charged with first-degree murder in the 1990 killing, CBC news reported.DNA evidence nailed him

Det-Sgt Stacy Gallant, in charge of the Toronto police force’s cold-case unit, said innovations in DNA evidence and other investigative techniques helped crack the case. “Items were re-examined,” the officer said. “Items that had been sitting on a shelf for years.” Parmar, who was 38 then, worked nights at the gas station and had a family in India, including a wife and two children aged six and 12. Family lives in Toronto After the killing, the family immigrated to Canada. The family currently live in the Toronto area, the report said. The officer said they were happy to hear of the arrest, but did not want to speak to the media. “To go 25 years without knowing who did this to their father was difficult to cope with,” Mr. Gallant said.

Parmar arrived in Canada in June 1990 and had planned to return home in January. He died of multiple stab wounds to the neck and abdomen. He wanted to make some money “He was trying to make a little money,” Toronto police Det-Sgt Jim Crowley told The Canadian Press in 1990. “He wanted to see some friends on the West Coast before he went back to India.” At the time of the incident, police told reporters that Parmar was likely killed during a robbery at the 24-hour gas station.

An interesting meet between AP CM Chandrababu Naidu and Power Star Pawan Kalyan will be held tomorrow afternoon. Although agenda of this meet is not clearly known, speculations are doing rounds that the heads of the political parties will discuss on various issues like farmers who are losing their lands for AP’s capital Amaravathi’s development and various other issues.

Political analysts are unclear whether the issues to be raised in this meet are to be solved or not. ” The issues may not be solved as the CM is stubborn in pumping in huge money for AP’s capital such that the meet could be useless. In another way, the meet would be useful to strengthen the ties between the TDP and Janasena,” say the analysts.

Pawan Kalyan’s ‘Sardaar Gabbar Singh’ is on a rapid pace of its shoot. Kajal Aggarwal romances with Pawan Kalyan in this action and comedy entertainer. Devi Sri Prasad scores the tunes of the movie. The movie is being directed by KS Ravindra on North Star Entertainment. The movie’s release date has been locked to April 8.

It remains to be seen if the HTC Desire 728G Dual SIM will do well in the Indian market thronged with mid-range devices. One of the biggest disappointments for prospective buyers will be 3G support, as even budget smartphones comes with 4G support these days. Another factor that can make buyers think twice is its price, as there are a few devices at this price range like OnePlus X, Moto X Play and OnePlus One with better specifications.

Movie Hit, But No Credit For Shruti

Svelte beauty Shruti Haasan is one of the most sought after heroines down south and he also has a handful of interesting Bollywood projects. On the 10th, Shruti’s latest Tamil film, Thala Ajith starrer Vedalam, released to decent reviews but the box-office reception has been humongous.

Many fans and critics who watched the film showered Ajith’s mass performance to no limits, terming Vedalam an out and out Ajith’s show. Unfortunately, no one has been talking about Shruti’s character in the film. Apparently, Shruti played a very insignificant role with hardly less than 10 scenes and a few songs.

In fact, it was the young actress Lakshmi Menon who stole the show with a meaty role as Ajith’s sister as the film is primarily a drama laced with sister sentiment. What’s even more disheartening for Shruti is that she sacrificed the crazy Tamil-Telugu bilingual Oopiri, starring Nag and Karthi, to act in Vedalam opposite a huge star like Ajith.

With Vedalam not adding any boost to Shruti’s career and with a great chance of acting in Oopiri gone wasted, Shruti’s fans are not happy with the actress’ script selections.

CM keen to develop Telugu Cinema: Ram Mohan Rao

Share

11RAM MOHAN

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is keen on developing the Telugu Film Industry, and the industry, along with the government, has prepared a road map for the purpose. Recently, cinematography minister Talasani Srinivasa Yadav met a few people from the industry to discuss the issue. When asked about it, Ram Mohan Rao, president of the Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce (TSFCC), said, “The Chief Minister is keen on developing the TFI. Before that the ministry and us, the industry people, are preparing a chart for the Chief Minister’s approval. “The first important issue is a single window system for shootings. We have to take permission from different departments if we want to shoot in the state. We want to make it easy,” he added.

Another issue is to sanction mini cinema theatres at mandal levels. “We are requesting the government to sanction mini theatres, of 200-seat capacities, at the Mandal headquarters. These theatres can be maintained with fewer staff and less money. They can also convert these theatres into cultural centres,” said Ram Mohan. Also, any film released in 75 and below screens should be declared a low-budget one and get tax exemption. He added that another important issue was ticketing. “We want all tickets to be sold online, through the Film Development Corporation (FDC). One can buy tickets at the theatres, but they will have to be put online. It will avoid black marketing, and show how many tickets are actually sold. There are complaints that sometimes theatres show fewer ticket sales to avoid tax. With this system you can’t cheat,” he said.

He added that the present slab system was forcing many theatres to close. “If the show is not houseful they have to still pay full tax, so we are requesting tax on actual tickets rates,” he added. Regarding piracy, Ram Mohan said that they had recently met the IT minister and he had responded positively to it. “He immediately called service providers like Google and asked them to send notices to those who would download a movie from the Internet. They are planning to implement a fine of `1,000 if a person downloads a movie from the Internet,” he says. Another important demand of the industry is that the producer should be given the choice to reduce or hike ticket rates with permission from the Commercial department.

The minister has discussed these issues with officials and the government’s response is apparently positive. “We are going to meet the Chief Minister this month-end and we are expecting a few sops from him,” said Ram Mohan. To another question, he said that he had already requested the minister to revive the Nandi Awards, which had been stopped a few years back. “It gives honour to Telugu films also encourages production of more films,” he said.
