The breakdown of peace talks between Iran and the United States has pushed regional tensions to a dangerous level. As rhetoric escalates from both sides, one country that stands to lose the most in this situation is Pakistan.
Pakistan finds itself in a highly sensitive position—caught between its strategic commitments to Saudi Arabia and its own internal dynamics. The long-standing military understanding between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia reportedly requires Islamabad to treat any attack on the Kingdom as a direct threat and respond accordingly, including military support if necessary.
While entering this arrangement, Pakistan may have anticipated threats primarily from regional rivalries involving India. However, the possibility of escalating tensions involving Iran presents a far more complicated challenge—one that directly impacts Pakistan’s internal stability.
If Pakistan chooses to back Saudi Arabia in a potential conflict against Iran, it risks triggering serious unrest within its own borders. The country has a significant Shia Muslim population, which shares religious ties with Iran. Any overt military support against Iran could inflame sectarian tensions and potentially lead to internal conflict.
On the other hand, staying neutral or avoiding support to Saudi Arabia could strain Pakistan’s crucial relationship with the Kingdom. Given Pakistan’s fragile economic condition and its reliance on financial assistance from Saudi Arabia, such a move could have serious economic consequences.
Compounding the issue, Pakistan is already dealing with multiple internal and external pressures. Border tensions with Afghan Taliban continue to create instability, while insurgent activities by groups like the Balochistan Liberation Army add to internal security concerns.
Economically, the country is under significant strain, grappling with high inflation, debt, and public dissatisfaction. In such a fragile environment, any escalation in regional conflict—or even the pressure to choose sides—could deepen Pakistan’s crisis.
With the collapse of Iran–USA talks, Pakistan is now navigating one of its most delicate geopolitical moments, where every decision carries serious risks both at home and abroad.
