Following the formation of the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has been vocal in his support for the Hindi language, positioning it as a key element in national integration. He has consistently emphasized the importance of Hindi in fostering unity across India, while also reinforcing the cultural pride of regional languages like Telugu.
In a recent speech, Kalyan reiterated his stance, calling for greater acceptance and penetration of Hindi, which he referred to as Rajya Bhasha (the state language) — a term often used synonymously with the national language.
Kalyan criticized the prevailing reluctance among some sections of society to learn Hindi, describing it as a result of “ignorance and incompetence.” He pointed out that while people have widely embraced languages like Urdu without resistance, there is a misplaced aversion when it comes to Hindi.
“There is absolutely no harm in learning Hindi. It’s just another language that can enhance our professional prospects,” he stated.
“While Telugu should always remain our mother tongue, Hindi can serve as the medium that binds the country together,” he added. In Telugu, he remarked:
“Telugu bhasha amma aithe, Hindi bhasha peddamma lantidi” (If Telugu is our mother, then Hindi is like the respected elder aunt).
Pawan Kalyan also highlighted a contradiction within the South Indian film industry, particularly Telugu cinema. He noted that many Telugu films are dubbed into Hindi and earn substantial revenues from North Indian audiences, yet there’s hesitation to embrace the language itself.
“We want our films to perform well in Hindi markets and generate revenue, but we hesitate to learn the language. That’s a disappointing and hypocritical attitude,” he remarked.
Through his speech, Kalyan urged people to adopt a more inclusive mindset, promoting multilingual proficiency without compromising on regional identity — a balance he believes is essential for a stronger and more united India.
