Pawan Kalyan: Indian Cinema or Bharateeya Chitra Parishrama?

Pawan Kalyan recently shared his thoughts on the identity of Indian cinema and why he feels more connected to the term Bharateeya Chitra Parishrama than to “Indian cinema.” In a candid interview, the actor-politician explained his perspective on regional authenticity and cultural representation across Indian films.

He began by saying, “Each film industry across India has its unique strength. But I don’t prefer the word ‘Indian cinema’ — it feels a bit alien to me. For me, it will always be Bharateeya Chitra Parishrama. When our film industry began, it was deeply rooted in our culture. However, over time, as generations of filmmakers evolved, Hindi cinema, in particular, became influenced by global trends. In the process, many movies began creating buffoonery around characters that were once culturally significant.”

Pawan Kalyan highlighted that South Indian cinema continues to celebrate the essence of Bharat. “Nowadays, South Indian films truly reflect Indian culture. Hindi cinema also had its glorious phases with movies like Dangal — a rooted, heartfelt story that spoke to the core of our identity. But such films have become rare in Bollywood,” he noted.

He also spoke about the vital rural connection that Southern cinema has maintained. “In the South, 70-80% of the audience is rural. Whether consciously or not, we hold on to that rural and native connect in our stories, and this authenticity is why our films resonate so strongly, even on a global scale,” Pawan concluded.
