As the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led coalition government gears up for a massive public meeting titled “Super Six-Super Hit” in Anantapur on Wednesday evening, a nuanced political scenario is unfolding in Andhra Pradesh.
Since coming to power, Jana Sena chief and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has repeatedly emphasized that the alliance between TDP, Jana Sena, and BJP should continue, and that Chandrababu Naidu should remain Chief Minister for the next 15 years. While some within the Jana Sena Party have expressed concerns over his statements, Pawan Kalyan continues to advocate for the long-term stability of the coalition, warning that a collapse could allow anarchic forces to take over the state.
A senior Jana Sena leader explains Pawan Kalyan’s loyalty to Naidu: “Coming to power independently would require enormous effort and spending thousands of crores. Pawan neither has the patience for such prolonged political toil nor the financial capacity to do so. Aligning with Chandrababu Naidu allows him to maintain office and reap benefits without the burdens of going it alone. That’s why he repeatedly praises Naidu publicly.”
Similarly, Chandrababu Naidu and his son Nara Lokesh are using a comparable strategy in dealing with the BJP national leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the India Today Conclave, Lokesh reaffirmed the TDP’s continued support for the NDA, even in the 2029 elections, signaling their respect for Modi’s leadership.
Sources note that Naidu’s cautious approach stems from past experiences. In 2018, he abruptly ended the alliance with BJP, assuming Modi might not return as Prime Minister in 2019—a move that cost him politically. “The lesson from the past seems to have prompted Chandrababu Naidu to adopt a complete surrender strategy from day one,” a senior leader said. Evidence of this can be seen when neither Naidu nor Pawan Kalyan opposed BJP’s appeal to YSRCP during the Vice-Presidential election, despite the YSRCP being a rival in the state.
In Andhra Pradesh politics, it appears both Pawan Kalyan and Chandrababu Naidu have chosen pragmatism and strategic alignment over independent political gambits, ensuring stability while maximizing their respective advantages.
