The highly anticipated global release of Salman Khan’s Sikandar was met with an unexpected and unfortunate setback as piracy struck even before the first show in India could commence. Despite the film’s promotional campaign failing to generate significant pre-release excitement, its producers and director remained confident that its mass appeal and action-packed narrative would resonate with audiences. However, the industry was left stunned when pirated copies of the film surfaced online at midnight, hours before its official release.
Upon receiving reports of the leak, producer Sajid Nadiadwala swiftly took action, mobilizing his team to combat the issue. Their efforts resulted in the removal of unauthorized links from over 600 websites. However, by that time, high-definition prints of the film had already circulated across multiple platforms, exacerbating the challenge of containment.
This incident serves as yet another wake-up call for the film industry. The repeated occurrence of piracy is causing substantial financial losses, not only for individual projects but for the entire cinematic ecosystem. If strict countermeasures are not put in place, other filmmakers and producers may soon find themselves facing similar predicaments.
The root cause of piracy must be identified and addressed systematically. Even if the servers hosting these illegal copies are located overseas, it is imperative to track IP addresses and collaborate with respective governments to enforce stricter penalties against perpetrators. The alarming increase in HD print leaks in recent months—affecting major releases like Game Changer, Pushpa 2, and Thandel—demands immediate intervention.
The industry has witnessed such challenges before. A decade ago, Pawan Kalyan’s Attarintiki Daredi faced a similar leak prior to its theatrical debut, which created a sensation at the time. However, back then, factors like 5G internet and the proliferation of instant messaging apps such as Telegram were not as prevalent. Today, the rapid dissemination of pirated content via such platforms has made it even more difficult to curb piracy.
Given the mixed-to-negative reception Sikandar has garnered so far, addressing the piracy issue head-on is crucial for the film’s box office survival. Producers invest hundreds of crores into these projects, and directors dedicate years of hard work to bring their creative visions to life. Piracy not only undermines their efforts but also devalues the industry as a whole.
It is high time for filmmakers, production houses, and regulatory authorities to recognize the gravity of the situation and implement stringent measures to combat piracy effectively. Without decisive action, the sustainability of theatrical releases will continue to be at risk, threatening the very foundation of the film industry.
